Rapid Energy Consumption Modelling for CNC Based Milling Process

This study introduces a methodology for rapidly establishing an energy consumption model based on NC code for CNC milling operations. The approach significantly reduces the time needed to gather training and validation data through two key techniques: (1) magnetic voltage sensors, facilitating direct installation onto electrical joints within the electrical box without the need for modifications to the machine tool electricity, and (2) a greatly reduced amount of cutting experiments required for collecting the training data based on a modified Taguchi method. The power consumption measurements are divided into two parts: (1) experiments conducted at varying spindle speeds and feed rates without cutting, and (2) cutting experiments conducted at varying spindle speeds, feed rates, depth of cut, and width of cut. The combinations of cutting parameters are significantly reduced based on the nature of the dependency of the parameters to the energy consumption, and using the Taguchi method and the cross-validation approach. The overall time required for obtaining the power consumption model is around 30 minutes, including 15 minutes estimated for electrical sensors installation. The methodology is applied to 10 distinct machine tools, demonstrating the versatility and applicability of the modeling process across diverse machining environments. The achieved error rate of up to 3.98% underscores the efficacy of this approach. Furthermore, the energy consumption data gleaned from these 10 machine tools are made readily available for open-source utilization, fostering accessibility and collaborative research in energy-efficient CNC milling processes.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE:The gold standard for diagnosing epiretinal membranes is to observe the surface of the internal limiting membrane on optical coherence tomography images. The stages of the epiretinal membrane are used to decide the condition of the health of the membrane. The stages are not detected because some of them are similar. To accurately classify the stages, a deep-learning technology can be used to improve the classification accuracy. METHODS:A combinatorial fusion with multiple convolutional neural networks (CNN) algorithms are proposed to enhance the accuracy of a single image classification model. The proposed method was trained using a dataset of 1947 optical coherence tomography images diagnosed with the epiretinal membrane at the Taichung Veterans General Hospital in Taiwan. The images consisted of 4 stages; stages 1, 2, 3, and 4. RESULTS:The overall accuracy of the classification was 84%. The combination of five and six CNN models achieves the highest testing accuracy (85%) among other combinations, respectively. Any combination with a different number of CNN models outperforms any single CNN algorithm working alone. Meanwhile, the accuracy of the proposed method is better than ophthalmologists with years of clinical experience. CONCLUSIONS:We have developed an efficient epiretinal membrane classification method by using combinatorial fusion with CNN models on optical coherence tomography images. The proposed method can be used for screening purposes to facilitate ophthalmologists making the correct diagnoses in general medical practice.

This study aimed to investigate the microstructural and mechanical properties of growth plate tissue under torsional loading, focusing on variations across individuals, growth plate types, and anatomical locations.A total of 398 samples from three distinct growth plates in five porcine subjects were subjected to cyclic torsion tests followed by ultimate failure testing. XAI refers to the techniques and methods for building AI applications which assist end users to interpret output and predictions of AI models. Black box AI applications in high-stakes decision-making situations, such as medical domain have increased the demand for transparency and explainability since wrong predictions may have severe consequences. Model explainability and interpretability are vital successful deployment of AI models in healthcare practices. AI applications' underlying reasoning needs to be transparent to clinicians in order to gain their trust. This paper presents a systematic review of XAI aspects and challenges in the healthcare domain. The primary goals of this study are to review various XAI methods, their challenges, and related machine learning models in healthcare. The methods are discussed under six categories: Features-oriented methods, global methods, concept models, surrogate models, local pixel-based methods, and human-centric methods. Most importantly, the paper explores XAI role in healthcare problems to clarify its necessity in safety-critical applications. The paper intends to establish a comprehensive understanding of XAI-related applications in the healthcare field by reviewing the related experimental results. To facilitate future research for filling research gaps, the importance of XAI models from different viewpoints and their limitations are investigated. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Explainable Artificial Intelligence to Detect Image Spam Using Convolutional Neural Network

Image spam threat detection has continually been a popular area of research with the internet's phenomenal expansion. This research presents an explainable framework for detecting spam images using Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) algorithms and Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) algorithms. In this work, we use CNN model to classify image spam respectively whereas the post-hoc XAI methods including Local Interpretable Model Agnostic Explanation (LIME) and Shapley Additive Explanations (SHAP) were deployed to provide explanations for the decisions that the black-box CNN models made about spam image detection. We train and then evaluate the performance of the proposed approach on a 6636 image dataset including spam images and normal images collected from three different publicly available email corpora. The experimental results show that the proposed framework achieved satisfactory detection results in terms of different performance metrics whereas the model-independent XAI algorithms could provide explanations for the decisions of different models which could be utilized for comparison for the future study. © 2022, CC BY.

Tunneling metal-insulator-metal (MIM) junctions can exhibit an open-circuit photovoltage (OCPV) response under illumination that may be useful for photodetection. One mechanism for photovoltage generation is hot carrier tunneling, in which photoexcited carriers generate a net photocurrent that must be balanced by a drift current in the open-circuit configuration. We present experiments in electromigrated planar MIM structures, designed with asymmetric plasmonic properties using Au and Pt electrodes. Decay of optically excited local plasmonic modes preferentially creates hot carriers on the Au side of the junction, leading to a clear preferred directionality of the hot electron photocurrent and hence a preferred polarity of the resulting OCPV. In contrast, in an ensemble of symmetric devices constructed from only one Au, polarity of the OCPV has no preferred direction. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

In the current landscape of deep learning research, there is a predominant emphasis on achieving high predictive accuracy in supervised tasks involving large image and language datasets. However, a broader perspective reveals a multitude of overlooked metrics, tasks, and data types, such as uncertainty, active and continual learning, and scientific data, that demand attention. Bayesian deep learning (BDL) constitutes a promising avenue, offering advantages across these diverse settings. This paper posits that BDL can elevate the capabilities of deep learning. It revisits the strengths of BDL, acknowledges existing challenges, and highlights some exciting research avenues aimed at addressing these obstacles. Looking ahead, the discussion focuses on possible ways to combine large-scale foundation models with BDL to unlock their full potential. © 2024, CC BY-NC-ND.

This study examines decision-making in software re-engineering within businesses, focusing on the challenges and considerations involved. Financial constraints, time, and staff efforts are critical factors in these decisions. The study identifies difficulties faced by top-level management with legacy systems, existing systems, underused systems, and packaged software due to user resistance and customer dissatisfaction. The primary goal of the study is to assess the importance of software quality factors, especially from the users' perspective, in making re-engineering decisions. It uses the ISO 9126 Model to analyze quality elements in the case study software, aiming to provide guidance for deciding whether to proceed with re-engineering. The study explores functionality, reliability, usability, efficiency, maintainability, and portability as factors influencing re-engineering decisions, based on the ISO 9126 model. To understand user interactions and program performance, the study used unstructured participant observation in the case study software, highlighting the challenges faced by top management due to user resistance. These findings were further confirmed through face-to-face interviews with software users and department employees, offering insights into their perspectives on software quality elements. The results reveal that, despite some flaws, the system has valuable features and capabilities. Most employees express a desire to undergo re-engineering to enhance service quality, align with ISO 9126 standards, and leverage the expertise of competent staff for re-engineering activities.

On the Complexity of the Storyplan Problem

Motivated by dynamic graph visualization, we study the problem of representing a graph G in the form of a storyplan, that is, a sequence of frames with the following properties. Each frame is a planar drawing of the subgraph of G induced by a suitably defined subset of its vertices. Between two consecutive frames, a new vertex appears while some other vertices may disappear, namely those whose incident edges have already been drawn in at least one frame. In a storyplan, each vertex appears and disappears exactly once. For a vertex (edge) visible in a sequence of consecutive frames, the point (curve) representing it does not change throughout the sequence. Note that the order in which the vertices of G appear in the sequence of frames is a total order. In the StoryPlan problem, we are given a graph and we want to decide whether there exists a total order of its vertices for which a storyplan exists. We prove that the problem is NP-complete, and complement this hardness with two parameterized algorithms, one in the vertex cover number and one in the feedback edge set number of G. Also, we prove that partial 3-trees always admit a storyplan, which can be computed in linear time. Finally, we show that the problem remains NP-complete in the case in which the total order of the vertices is given as part of the input and we have to choose how to draw the frames. © 2022, CC BY.

The reliability of water quality measurement is crucial for sustainable use of ocean resources, climate and ecosystem models, and industrial applications. However, measurement stations in remote locations face limitations in terms of power, communication, and maintenance, posing challenges for data quality. Even though some basic (near) real-time automatic tests are proposed in oceanographic measurement guidelines, time- and resource consuming Delayed Mode Quality Control is still required before using measurement data in forecasting, models, or decision-making. To design effective quality control tests for more autonomous sensors with self-validating capabilities in real-time, a good understanding of expected environmental effects or errors on sensor signals is *** paper focuses on the effect of biofouling on the measurement of selected water quality parameters such as conductivity, oxygen, and turbidity. Biofouling remains a major issue despite research on biofouling protection and anti-biofouling sensor design. Biofouling growth on underwater sensors can increase measurement errors and uncertainty, result in shorter operation times, and require costly manual work related to retrieval, cleaning, and re-deployment. For some measurement technologies, biofouling can result in noise, while for others, it may cause systematic drift or delay signal ***, we propose quality control tests designed to automatically detect and assess the impact of biofouling on sensor signals. These tests are applied to measurement data sets with a known presence of biofouling from Austevoll (Norway).
