Textbook Question Answering (TQA) is the task of answering diagram and non-diagram questions given large multimodal contexts consisting of abundant text and diagrams. Deep text understandings and effective learning of diagram semantics are important for this task due to its specificity. In this paper, we propose a Weakly Supervised learning method for TQA (WSTQ), which regards the incompletely accurate results of essential intermediate procedures for this task as supervision to develop Text Matching (TM) and Relation Detection (RD) tasks and then employs the tasks to motivate itself to learn strong text comprehension and excellent diagram semantics respectively. Specifically, we apply the result of text retrieval to build positive as well as negative text pairs. In order to learn deep text understandings, we first pre-train the text understanding module of WSTQ on TM and then fine-tune it on TQA. We build positive as well as negative relation pairs by checking whether there is any overlap between the items/regions detected from diagrams using object detection. The RD task forces our method to learn the relationships between regions, which are crucial to express the diagram semantics. We train WSTQ on RD and TQA simultaneously, i.e., multitask learning, to obtain effective diagram semantics and then improve the TQA performance. Extensive experiments are carried out on CK12-QA and AI2D to verify the effectiveness of WSTQ. Experimental results show that our method achieves significant accuracy improvements of 5.02% and 4.12% on test splits of the above datasets respectively than the current state-of-the-art baseline. Emotion correlation mining through deep learning models on natural language text

Emotion analysis has been attracting researchers’ attention. Most previous works in the artificial-intelligence field focus on recognizing emotion rather than mining the reason why emotions are not or wrongly recognized. The correlation among emotions contributes to the failure of emotion recognition. In this article, we try to fill the gap between emotion recognition and emotion correlation mining through natural language text from Web news. The correlation among emotions, expressed as the confusion and evolution of emotion, is primarily caused by human emotion cognitive bias. To mine emotion correlation from emotion recognition through text, three kinds of features and two deep neural-network models are presented. The emotion confusion law is extracted through an orthogonal basis. The emotion evolution law is evaluated from three perspectives: one-step shift, limited-step shifts, and shortest path transfer. The method is validated using three datasets: 1) the titles;2) the bodies;and 3) the comments of news articles, covering both objective and subjective texts in varying lengths (long and short). The experimental results show that in subjective comments, emotions are easily mistaken as anger. Comments tend to arouse emotion circulations of love–anger and sadness–anger. In objective news, it is easy to recognize text emotion as love and cause fear–joy circulation. These findings could provide insights for applications regarding affective interaction, such as network public sentiment, social media communication, and human–computer interaction. Smart grids are faced with a range of challenges, such as the development of communication infrastructure, cybersecurity threats, data privacy, and the protection of user information, due to their complex structure. Another key challenge faced by smart grids is the stability issues arising from variable energy sources and consumption patterns. In these complex grid systems where energy demand and supply need to be balanced instantly, stability predictions play a significant role in foreseeing potential disruptions and optimizing energy flow. Therefore, within the scope of this study, a hybrid structure utilizing Recurrent Neural Networks (RNN) and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks is employed for stability classification to predict grid stability. This hybrid model combines the ability of RNN to recognize relationships between consecutive data points with LSTM’s capability to preserve long-term dependencies. The results obtained indicate that the model exhibited stable performance with accuracy rates of 98.06% and 98.02% at 50 and 100 epochs, respectively. The findings of this study contribute valuable insights to research on the management and stability of smart grids, enabling energy systems to be operated more reliably and efficiently.

Electromyography (EMG) is extensively used in key biomedical areas, such as prosthetics, and assistive and interactive technologies. EMG signals measure the electrical activity of muscles during different motions. EMG signals play a key role in gesture recognition studies, such as hand gesture recognition. This paper presents a new hybrid neural network named ConSGruNet for precise and efficient hand gesture recognition. The proposed model comprises convolutional neural networks with smart skip connections in conjunction with a Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU). The proposed model is trained on the complete Ninapro DB1 dataset. The proposed model boasts an accuracy of 99.7% in classifying 53 classes in just 25 milliseconds. In addition to being fast, the proposed model is lightweight with just 3,946 KB in size. The fast inference time and lightweight architecture of the proposed model makes it suitable for resource constrained IoT devices. Moreover, the proposed model has also been evaluated for the reliability parameters, i.e., Cohen’s kappa coefficient, Matthew’s correlation coefficient, and confidence intervals. The close to ideal results of these parameters validate the models performance on unseen data.

Air pollution attracts extensive attention globally due to its critical impacts on human life. Monitoring systems providing real-time micro-level pollution information have been developed to provide authorities with data to mitigate these impacts. However, current systems are usually application-specific with fixed hardware and software configurations. They are inconvenient in maintenance, infeasible in reconfiguration, and unexpandable in sensing capabilities. This paper proposes a novel Modular Sensor System (MSS), which aims at tackling these issues by adopting the proposed Universal Sensor Interface (USI) and modular design in a sensor node. A compact MSS senor node with expandable plug-and-play sensor modules and multiple Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) compatibility is implemented and evaluated. Results indicate that MSS sensor node can be deployed in different scenarios while dynamically adapting to reconfigurations and monitoring air pollution at low concentration levels with high energy efficiency. We anticipate that MSS is able to relax the efforts on system maintenance, adaptation, and evolution in real-life large-scale deployment situation.

As infected and vaccinated population increases, some countries decided not to impose non-pharmaceutical intervention measures anymore and to coexist with COVID-19. However, we do not have a comprehensive understanding of its consequence, especially for China where most population has not been infected and most Omicron transmissions are silent. This paper serves as the first study to reveal the complete silent transmission dynamics of COVID-19 overlaying a big data of more than 0.7 million real individual mobility tracks without any intervention measures throughout a week in a Chinese city, with an extent of completeness and realism not attained in existing studies. Together with the empirically inferred transmission rate of COVID-19, we find surprisingly that with only 70 citizens to be infected initially, 0.33 million becomes infected silently at last. We also reveal a characteristic daily periodic pattern of the transmission dynamics, with peaks in mornings and afternoons. In addition, retailing, catering and hotel staff are more likely to get infected than other professions. Unlike all other age groups and professions, elderly and retirees are more likely to get infected at home than outside home. Copyright © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

As artificial intelligence (AI) advances, it is essential to continuously comprehend its limitations to optimise the integration of AI into autonomous systems that empower humans. The first objective of this study is to highlight the key capabilities of both humans and AI, focusing on the differences and identifying limitations of AI from the literature. Through discrepancy analysis, this study uses a Venn diagram to visualise the remaining limitations of AI into five key domains: (i) emotional intelligence, (ii) consciousness and awareness, (iii) creative imagination, (iv) communication, and (v) ethical decision-making. Furthermore, this study employs thematic bibliometric analysis to provide a more detailed examination of each AI limitation as the second objective. This study has identified underdeveloped and emerging research themes with potential for future development, such as emotion recognition, human-computer interaction, digital health, and situational awareness, which may require further research. Additionally, this study commends the ongoing efforts to harness AI’s computational power and algorithmic innovations to enhance AI’s overall performance and applicability.

Nuclei grading of clear cell renal cell carcinoma in histopathological image by composite high-resolution network

The grade of clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) is a critical prognostic factor, making ccRCC nuclei grading a crucial task in RCC pathology analysis. computer-aided nuclei grading aims to improve pathologists' work efficiency while reducing their misdiagnosis rate by automatically identifying the grades of tumor nuclei within histopathological images. Such a task requires precisely segment and accurately classify the nuclei. However, most of the existing nuclei segmentation and classification methods can not handle the inter-class similarity property of nuclei grading, thus can not be directly applied to the ccRCC grading task. In this paper, we propose a Composite High-Resolution Network for ccRCC nuclei grading. Specifically, we propose a segmentation network called W-Net that can separate the clustered nuclei. Then, we recast the fine-grained classification of nuclei to two cross-category classification tasks, based on two high-resolution feature extractors (HRFEs) which are proposed for learning these two tasks. The two HRFEs share the same backbone encoder with W-Net by a composite connection so that meaningful features for the segmentation task can be inherited for the classification task. Last, a head-fusion block is applied to generate the predicted label of each nucleus. Furthermore, we introduce a dataset for ccRCC nuclei grading, containing 1000 image patches with 70945 annotated nuclei. We demonstrate that our proposed method achieves state-of-the-art performance compared to existing methods on this large ccRCC grading dataset. © 2021, CC BY.

Instance-based vision transformer for subtyping of papillary renal cell carcinoma in histopathological image

Histological subtype of papillary (p) renal cell carcinoma (RCC), type 1 vs. type 2, is an essential prognostic factor. The two subtypes of pRCC have a similar pattern, i.e., the papillary architecture, yet some subtle differences, including cellular and cell-layer level patterns. However, the cellular and cell-layer level patterns almost cannot be captured by existing CNN-based models in large-size histopathological images, which brings obstacles to directly applying these models to such a fine-grained classification task. This paper proposes a novel instance-based Vision Transformer (i-ViT) to learn robust representations of histopathological images for the pRCC subtyping task by extracting finer features from instance patches (by cropping around segmented nuclei and assigning predicted grades). The proposed i-ViT takes top-K instances as input and aggregates them for capturing both the cellular and cell-layer level patterns by a position-embedding layer, a gradeembedding layer, and a multi-head multi-layer self-attention module. To evaluate the performance of the proposed framework, experienced pathologists are invited to selected 1162 regions of interest from 171 whole slide images of type 1 and type 2 pRCC. Experimental results show that the proposed method achieves better performance than existing CNN-based models with a significant margin. © 2021, CC BY.

This paper examines the mixed convective heat transfer (HTR) of nanofluid (NFD) flow in a rectangular enclosure with the upper moving wall numerically. The lower wall has a high temperature and a number of semi-circular obstacles with the same temperature are installed on it. The upper moving wall has a low temperature and the other two walls are insulated. The enclosure can change from horizontal to vertical. Radiation HTR is considered in the enclosure and there is a magnetic field (MGF) that can change the angle from horizontal to vertical affecting the NFD. This study is carried out for different angles of the enclosure and MGF from horizontal to vertical for radiation parameters (RDP) of 0 to 3 and a constant MGF with Hartmann number of 20 and Richardson number of 10. The aim is to estimate the Nusselt number (Nu), entropy generation (ETG), and Bejan number (Be). The SIMPLE algorithm is utilized using FORTRAN software, and optimization is done using artificial intelligence to find the maximum and minimum output values. The results demonstrate that the maximum value of Nu and Bes corresponds to the MGF angle and enclosure angle of 90°. The minimum value of the Nu and the maximum amount of ETG corresponds to the horizontal MGF and horizontal enclosure when the RDP is 1.5. An increment in the RDP enhances the amount of Nu. The maximum amount of ETG, i.e. 12.87, corresponds to the enclosure with an angle of 45° for the horizontal MGF and the absence of RDP. corresponds to the enclosure with an angle of 45° for the horizontal MGF and the absence of RDP. It was also found that most environmental impacts, and hence values for different environmental factors, arise from the production of nanoparticles; thus, it is a significant contributor to environmental impacts.
