Establishing early warning systems and efficient management of water resources in tidal reaches is crucial for achieving adequate flood protection. In tidal reaches, the river stage interacts non-linearly with tides (downstream) and discharge (upstream), making the modeling of river processes extremely complex. Data-driven methods have proven helpful for predicting the river stage parameter. This contrasts with existing numerical approaches, which suffer from several limitations. The aim of this study was to predict the river stage of the upstream part of the tidal river, where the influence of salinity is present during the summer months. Using the CNN-LSTM model trained on historical records of the discharge (station of the variable to be predicted), the river stage of three downstream stations, and the point of interest, the prediction was carried out up to 24 hours in advance. By incorporating feature engineering, we achieved an improvement in model results for the longest horizon, confirmed by standard performance metrics, and considered it efficient and effective for risk mitigation. Introducing feature engineering into the data preprocessing resulted in a predictive performance improvement of 0.98% for the Nash-Sutcliffe Efficiency (NSE) metric, 7.0% for the root mean squared error (RMSE) metric, and 7.25% for the mean absolute error (MAE) metric over the second and third-best scenarios using a spectrogram and time-series data. © 2024 University of Split, FESB.

Distributed Nash equilibrium for pursuit-evasion game with one evader and multiple pursuers

This paper investigates the pursuit-evasion problem involving one evader and multiple pursuers with limited sensing capability, where the evader tries to maximize the distance with the pursuers, while the pursuers have different objectives based on whether they can receive the information of the evader. The subgroup of pursuers who can observe the evader(called leaders) tries to be close to the evader, and the other subgroup of pursuers(called followers) tries to synchronize with their neighbors. When the subgraph formed by all leaders is complete, sufficient conditions are given to guarantee that the pursuers capture the evader and the pursuit-evasion game composed of the evader and leaders reaches Nash equilibrium. Furthermore, for the incomplete subgraph case, the distributed observers are proposed to estimate the relative positions between the evader and all leaders. It is shown that the distributed control strategy based on the observers converges exponentially to the Nash equilibrium solution, and makes the pursuers capture the evader. Finally, simulation examples are provided to verify the effectiveness of the proposed strategies.

Parity-time (PT) reversal symmetry, as a representative example in the field of non-Hermitian physics, has attracted widespread research interest in the past few years due to its extraordinary wave dynamics. PT symmetry enables unique spectral singularities including the exceptional point (EP) degeneracy where two or more eigenvalues and eigenvectors coalesce, as well as the coherent perfect absorber-laser (CPAL) point where laser and its time-reversal counterpart (i.e., coherent perfect absorber) can coexist at the same frequency. These singular points not only give rise to new physical phenomena but also provide new plausibility for building the next-generation sensors and detectors with unprecedented sensitivity. To date, investigations into EPs and CPAL points have unveiled their great potential in various sensing scenarios across a broad spectral range, spanning optics, photonics, electronics, and acoustics. In this review article, we will discuss ongoing developments of EP- and CPAL-based sensors composed of PT-synthetic structures and offer a glimpse into the future research directions in this emerging field. © (2024), (Electromagnetics Academy). Extracting parameters accurately and effectively from solar photovoltaic (PV) models is crucial for detailed simulation, evaluation, and management of PV systems. Although there has been an increase in the development of analytical, numerical, and metaheuristic methods targeting this task, accurately determining these parameters continues to be a significant challenge. This study focuses on applying Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) for the extraction of key parameters of RTC France solar cells, a critical step towards enhancing PV system efficiency and reliability. Additionally, the PSO's performance is evaluated against other metaheuristic algorithms including Enhanced Chaotic JAYA (CJAYA), Performance-Guided JAYA (PGJAYA), and Enhanced Gradient-Based Optimizer (EGBO), underscoring the effectiveness of the proposed PSO-based approach. Utilizing MATLAB-SIMULINK, comprehensive analysis and results are presented, shedding light on the efficacy of PSO in addressing the intricacies of parameter extraction in PV systems. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

This study aims to classify brainwave patterns using electroencephalogram (EEG) signals in response to various auditory stimuli, specifically Quran recitation, participants' favorite music, and Interstellar's main theme. By analyzing the unique EEG responses elicited by these stimuli, the study explores cognitive and emotional processing differences. Two prominent classifiers, Support Vector Machine (SVM) and Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN), were utilized. SVM, combined with Power Spectral Density (PSD) features, achieved the highest accuracy of 95% when distinguishing Quran recitation from rest. CNN, particularly with Kernel Density Estimation (KDE) features, exhibited strong performance in distinguishing between different auditory stimuli, with an average accuracy exceeding 90%. These results highlight the critical role of feature extraction techniques, such as PSD and KDE, in improving classification performance and deepening our understanding of EEG-based emotional and cognitive responses to auditory stimuli. © 2024 IEEE.

Face recognition (FR) technology has numerous applications in artificial intelligence including biometrics, security,authentication, law enforcement, and surveillance. Deep learning (DL) models, notably convolutional neuralnetworks (CNNs), have shown promising results in the field of FR. However CNNs are easily fooled since theydo not encode position and orientation correlations between features. Hinton et al. envisioned Capsule Networksas a more robust design capable of retaining pose information and spatial correlations to recognize objects morelike the brain does. Lower-level capsules hold 8-dimensional vectors of attributes like position, hue, texture, andso on, which are routed to higher-level capsules via a new routing by agreement algorithm. This provides capsulenetworks with viewpoint invariance, which has previously evaded CNNs. This research presents a FR model basedon capsule networks that was tested using the LFW dataset, COMSATS face dataset, and own acquired photos usingcameras measuring 128 × 128 pixels, 40 × 40 pixels, and 30 × 30 pixels. The trained model outperforms state-ofthe-art algorithms, achieving 95.82% test accuracy and performing well on unseen faces that have been blurred orrotated. Additionally, the suggested model outperformed the recently released approaches on the COMSATS facedataset, achieving a high accuracy of 92.47%. Based on the results of this research as well as previous results, capsulenetworks perform better than deeper CNNs on unobserved altered data because of their special equivarianceproperties.

Modified simulated annealing for university teacher course assignment considering socio-cultural constraints

This paper aims to address the complex challenge of course assignment for faculty members within a Saudi university, taking into account the socio-cultural constraints imposed by gender-based segregation between students and faculty. To tackle this challenge, a combinatorial optimization model is proposed, which includes a binary representation of the problem, constraints reflecting gender segregation, and an objective function designed to maximize faculty satisfaction. The model employs a Simulated Annealing (SA) algorithm, supplemented with two neighborhood search heuristics (H1 and H2), to explore diverse combinations. Additionally, a greedy randomized adaptive search procedure Greedy Randomized Adaptive Search Procedure (GRASP) algorithm is implemented for comparative analysis, utilizing heuristic 1 for local search. Through the application of simulated annealing alongside both heuristics (SA_H1_H2), the optimal solution is achieved, resulting in a notable equilibrium of courses among faculty members. Objective 1 demonstrates the standardized deviation in workload distribution among faculty members, yielding a deviation value of 0.08. This study contributes to the field by proposing a novel approach to course assignment that explicitly addresses the gender-based segregation prevalent in Saudi universities. By integrating socio-cultural constraints into the optimization model and employing advanced algorithms, the study offers a pioneering solution to a previously unexplored problem domain. © Bharati Vidyapeeth's Institute of computer Applications and Management 2024.

In text mining and Natural Language Processing (NLP), extracting emotions from textual data is gaining rapid attraction. The proliferation of online content and the freedom of expression on social media platforms has compelled the advancement of more sophisticated methods for the automatic identification of unwanted content. The One-Dimensional Convolutional Neural Network (1D-CNN) performs best for feature extraction, while the Long Short-Term Memory Network (LSTM) is well-known for extracting sequential features and classification of textual data. This study proposes a novel solution by combining 1D-CNN with LSTM. Utilizing a context-aware model, this study aims to enhance the detection of immoral posts, including hate speech and other forms of immoral content on social media platforms. Various posts are extracted from social media, which are then processed using Glove word embedding models. It depicts the word representations in the text, which yields the form of a real-valued vector determining the words' meaning. The 1D convolution utilizes a filter window over the input time-series data to extract features. Relying on the acquired parameters of the filters, they act as feature extractors. This feature extraction technique allows the model to distinguish detailed patterns and nuances from the textual contents of posts. The sequential processing capabilities of the LSTM network enable an in-depth examination of the text, capturing temporal relationships and context, which is critical for successful content categorization. To validate the proposed model, we utilized a benchmark dataset, called the Twitter dataset. The proposed model achieved the highest accuracy of 95.37% and outperforms state-of-the-art works. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2025.

Traditional dental plaque detection relies on medical staining reagents and professional intervention. Deep learning-based automatic staining-free dental plaque segmentation provides an alternative for patients to perform plaque detection at home without staining reagents. However, existing methods still struggle with low-contrast visual features between unstained plaque and healthy teeth. To address this, we propose a Frequency-Guided Network (FGN) for low-contrast staining-free dental plaque segmentation. We observe that dental plaque tends to concentrate specifically near the junction between the teeth and the gingiva. This junction demonstrates abrupt changes in pixel values, indicating high-frequency regions in the image. In other words, dental plaque tends to appear near the high-frequency regions of oral endoscope images. Exploiting this characteristic, we employ a frequency-guided decoupling module to separate the image into high-frequency and low-frequency regions automatically and expand the high-frequency region to encompass nearby potential dental plaque. Then we supervise two regions individually to specifically focus on the expended high-frequency region for localizing nearby dental plaque. Additionally, we propose a high-to-low frequency multiple tasks framework. In the first phase, the network segments the teeth region, and then we input the teeth mask into the second phase. In the second stage, the teeth mask allows us to have a higher frequency at the junction between the teeth and gums, thereby enhancing the effectiveness of frequency-guided decoupling. Furthermore, FGN integrates a frequency-driven refinement module to enhance the guidance quality of the teeth mask for the second phase. Extensive evaluations of the oral endoscope dataset demonstrate that our method outperforms existing high-performance segmentation methods.
