CP_DeepNet: a novel automated system for COVID-19 and pneumonia detection through lung X-rays

In recent years, the COVID-19 outbreak has affected humanity across the globe. The frequent symptoms of COVID-19 are identical to the normal flu, such as fever and cough. COVID-19 disseminates rapidly, and it has become a prominent cause of mortality. Nowadays, the new wave of COVID-19 has created significant impacts in China. This virus can have detrimental effects on people of all ages, particularly the elderly, due to their weak immune systems. The real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) examination is typically performed for the identification of coronavirus. RT-PCR is an expensive and time requiring method, accompanied by a significant rate of false negative detections. Therefore, it is mandatory to develop an inexpensive, fast, and reliable method to detect COVID-19. X-ray images are generally utilized to detect diverse respiratory conditions like pulmonary infections, breathlessness syndrome, lung cancer, air collection in spaces of the lungs, etc. This study has also utilized a chest X-ray dataset to identify COVID-19 and pneumonia. In this research work, we proposed a novel deep learning model CP_DeepNet, which is based on a pre-trained deep learning model such as SqueezeNet, and further added three blocks of convolutional layers to it for assessing the classification efficacy. Furthermore, we employed a data augmentation method for generating more images to overcome the problem of model overfitting. We utilized COVID-19 radiograph dataset for evaluating the performance of the proposed model. To elaborate further, we obtained significant results with accuracy of 99.32%, a precision of 100%, a recall of 99%, a specificity of 99.2%, an area under the curve of 99.78%, and an F1-score of 99.49% on CP_DeepNet for the binary classification of COVID-19 and normal class. We also employed CP_DeepNet for the multiclass classification of COVID-19, pneumonia, and normal person, in which CP_DeepNet achieved accuracy, precision, recall, specificity, area under curve

The capacity to generalize to future unseen data stands as one of the utmost crucial attributes of deep neural networks. Sharpness-Aware Minimization (SAM) aims to enhance the generalizability by minimizing worst-case loss using one-step gradient ascent as an approximation. However, as training progresses, the non-linearity of the loss landscape increases, rendering one-step gradient ascent less effective. On the other hand, multi-step gradient ascent will incur higher training cost. In this paper, we introduce a normalized Hessian trace to accurately measure the curvature of loss landscape on both training and test sets. In particular, to counter excessive non-linearity of loss landscape, we propose Curvature Regularized SAM (CR-SAM), integrating the normalized Hessian trace as a SAM regularizer. Additionally, we present an efficient way to compute the trace via finite differences with parallelism. Our theoretical analysis based on PAC-Bayes bounds establishes the regularizer’s efficacy in reducing generalization error. Empirical evaluation on CIFAR and ImageNet datasets shows that CR-SAM consistently enhances classification performance for ResNet and Vision Transformer (ViT) models across various datasets. Within the electronic design automation(EDA) domain, artificial intelligence(AI)-driven solutions have emerged as formidable tools, yet they typically augment rather than redefine existing methodologies. These solutions often repurpose deep learning models from other domains, such as vision, text, and graph analytics, applying them to circuit design without tailoring to the unique complexities of electronic circuits. Such an “AI4EDA” approach falls short of achieving a holistic design synthesis and understanding,overlooking the intricate interplay of electrical, logical, and physical facets of circuit data. This study argues for a paradigm shift from AI4EDA towards AI-rooted EDA from the ground up, integrating AI at the core of the design process. Pivotal to this vision is the development of a multimodal circuit representation learning technique, poised to provide a comprehensive understanding by harmonizing and extracting insights from varied data sources, such as functional specifications, register-transfer level(RTL) designs, circuit netlists,and physical layouts. We champion the creation of large circuit models(LCMs) that are inherently multimodal, crafted to decode and express the rich semantics and structures of circuit data, thus fostering more resilient, efficient, and inventive design methodologies. Embracing this AI-rooted philosophy, we foresee a trajectory that transcends the current innovation plateau in EDA, igniting a profound “shift-left” in electronic design methodology. The envisioned advancements herald not just an evolution of existing EDA tools but a revolution, giving rise to novel instruments of design-tools that promise to radically enhance design productivity and inaugurate a new epoch where the optimization of circuit performance, power, and area(PPA) is achieved not incrementally, but through leaps that redefine the benchmarks of electronic systems' capabilities.

As memory corruption vulnerabilities evolve, attackers have shifted focus from traditional control-flow attacks to non-control data attacks, which manipulate data influencing a program′s behavior without altering its control flow. This shift bypasses conventional defenses like Control Flow Integrity (CFI), posing new security risks. In response, we propose a novel defense mechanism called Page Fault Handler-assisted Defense (PFHaD). PFHaD leverages hardware page faults to protect critical data in memory, providing robust defense against non-control data attacks with minimal performance overhead. Unlike traditional defenses, PFHaD also prevents information leakage by making critical data pages inaccessible. The solution does not require modifications to hardware, compilers, or operating systems, making it ideal for commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) software. Experimental results demonstrate that PFHaD effectively mitigates a wide range of non-control data attacks while maintaining low performance impact, offering a scalable and efficient solution to modern memory corruption threats. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Blockchain and the Internet of Things (IoT), two of the most emerging technologies, are already reconfiguring our digital future, as described by the drastic change in the current network architecture. The incorporation of IoT has brought the objects around us to life, making them "smart" and capable of communicating with one another, thereby amassing massive data by consistently acquiring the physical world for analysis and intelligent action. It has made our dream of seamless integration of the digital and physical worlds a reality, altering the essence of our perception of the physical world. However, the issue with current IoT solutions is the requirement for a centrally controlled party (similar to a cloud server). This research covers the most essential implications of IoT’s most challenging scenarios, as revealed by the current studies, when connecting and communicating via the Internet. The vast amounts of generated sensitive data pose a significant risk to privacy and security;interestingly, the original architecture design calls for a decentralized system, such as the distributed or peer-to-peer (P2P) system. This scenario highlights the relevance of the blockchain, as it can offer a secure and trustworthy method of sharing information via a distributed/P2P model for achieving transparency, security, privacy, auditability, resilience, access authentication, data immutability, and so on. In this study, we explain how blockchain and IoT technologies are combined to overcome their specific shortcomings and ultimately achieve their maximum benefits. This research also discusses the technical aspects of IoT and bitcoin. We present a comprehensive overview of both technologies, including the blockchain-based IoT (BIoT) architecture and operation, and a few examples of BIoT applications and their comparison. © 2023 Authors. DFU_XAI: A Deep Learning-Based Approach to Diabetic Foot Ulcer Detection Using Feature Explainability

Diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) is a potentially fatal complication of diabetes. Traditional techniques of DFU analysis and therapy are more time-consuming and costly. Artificial intelligence (AI), particularly deep neural networks, has demonstrated remarkable effectiveness in medical applications. Despite this, the lack of explainability of deep learning models is currently viewed as a key hurdle to using these approaches in actual clinical settings. In this research, we present the DFU_XAI framework for assessing the interpretability of explainable-driven deep learning (DL) models. DFU_XAI evaluates five DL models (Xception, DenseNet121, ResNet50, InceptionV3, and MobileNetV2) to establish a transparent DL framework using three state-of-the-art explanation methods: Shapley additive explanation (SHAP), local interpretable model-agnostic explanations (LIME), and gradient-weighted class activation mapping (Grad-CAM). ResNet50 outperformed the other four models with remarkable results: 98.75% accuracy, 99.2% precision, 97.6% recall, 98.4% F1-score, and 98.5% AUC. For the most part, it can locate diabetic foot ulcers precisely on a diabetic foot and discriminate between diabetic foot ulcers and healthy feet in the DFU dataset. A heat map will indicate the precise location of the ulcer that needs care. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer science+Business Media, LLC 2024.

A Rearrangement and Restore-Based Mixer Model for Target-Oriented Multimodal Sentiment Classification

With the development of fine-grained multimodal sentiment analysis tasks, target-oriented multimodal sentiment (TMSC) analysis has received more attention, which aims to classify the sentiment of target with the help of textual and associated image features. Existing methods focus on exploring fine-grained image features and incorporate transformer-based complex fusion strategies, while ignoring the heavy computational burden. Recently, some lightweight multilayer perceptrons (MLP)-based methods have been successfully applied to multimodal sentiment classification tasks. In this article, we propose an effective rearrangement and restore mixer model (RR-Mixer) for TMSC, which dedicates the interaction of image, text, and targets along the modal-axis, sequential-axis, and feature channel-axis through rearrangement and restore operations. Specifically, we take vision transformer (ViT) and robustly optimized BERT (RoBERTa) pretrained models to extract image and textual features, respectively. Further, we adopt cosine similarity to select the most semantically relevant image features. Then, an RR-Mixer module is designed for mixed multimodal features, with the core technology consisting of rolling, grouping rearrangement and restore operations. Moreover, we introduce MLP Unit to learn the information of different modalities for intermodal interaction. The results show that our model achieves superior performance on two benchmark multimodal datasets, TWITTER-15 and TWITTER-17, with a significant improvement of 4.66% and 1.26% in terms of macro-F1. © 2020 IEEE.

With the development of hardware devices and the upgrading of smartphones,a large number of users save privacy-related information in mobile devices,mainly smartphones,which puts forward higher demands on the protection of mobile users’privacy *** present,mobile user authenticationmethods based on humancomputer interaction have been extensively studied due to their advantages of high precision and non-perception,but there are still shortcomings such as low data collection efficiency,untrustworthy participating nodes,and lack of *** this end,this paper proposes a privacy-enhanced mobile user authentication method with motion sensors,which mainly includes:(1)Construct a smart contract-based private chain and federated learning to improve the data collection efficiency of mobile user authentication,reduce the probability of the model being bypassed by attackers,and reduce the overhead of data centralized processing and the risk of privacy leakage;(2)Use certificateless encryption to realize the authentication of the device to ensure the credibility of the client nodes participating in the calculation;(3)Combine Variational Mode Decomposition(VMD)and Long Short-TermMemory(LSTM)to analyze and model the motion sensor data of mobile devices to improve the accuracy of model *** experimental results on the real environment dataset of 1513 people show that themethod proposed in this paper can effectively resist poisoning attacks while ensuring the accuracy and efficiency of mobile user authentication.

NeuroProbe: A Performance Profiling Feed Forward Neural Network Simulator for Hardware Interaction Analysis

NeuroProbe is a simple neural network simulator designed by authors specifically for educational purposes focusing on simulating inference phase on a computationally capable embedded hardware, aiming to provide a deeper understanding of hardware interactions and performance improvement. This simulator incorporates performance profiling capabilities, allowing students and educators to analyze and optimize the performance of a simulated trained neural network. By simulating the intricate hardware interactions, NeuroProbe enables users to gain insights into how various components impact the overall performance of neural networks. Using this simulator, learners can experiment with different configurations and architectures, identify potential bottlenecks, and explore optimization strategies to enhance neural network performance before deploying the model on an Edge Computing environment. It also enriches computer science education by enabling learners to gain deeper insights into hardware interactions and performance improvement. By identifying performance bottlenecks, learners can refine their understanding of neural networks and develop skills in optimizing their models for enhanced performance. In conclusion, NeuroProbe empowers users to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical implementation of neural network on an embedded device, fostering a more comprehensive understanding of neural networks and their hardware requirements. Currently, it is focused solely on single-threaded CPU-based computation enabling SSE, AVX. At present, NeuroProbe does not support SIMD extensions such as AVX-FMA, AVX-512, multi-threaded computation, and accelerators such as NPU, TPU, and GPU. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

Optimizing Coverage in Wireless Sensor Networks Using the Tumbleweed Algorithm

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have found extensive applications across various fields, significantly enhancing the convenience in our daily lives. Hence, an in-creasing number of researchers are directing their attention toward the performance of sensor nodes, with a particular emphasis on addressing the coverage challenges in WSNs. Node coverage plays a crucial role in determining the detection performance of WSNs, making it imperative to attain maximum coverage with a given number of sensor nodes. This paper applies the Tumbleweed Algorithm (TA) to the coverage problem in WSNs and validates its effectiveness through simulation experiments. The results demonstrate its unique advantages in global search and avoiding local optima, providing a new solution for the WSN coverage problem and offering valuable references for future research and practical applications. The TA algorithm simulates the lifecycle of tumbleweed from seedling to mature plant and includes the concept of growth cycles. This paper compares the TA algorithm with PSO, GWO, DE, BOA, SCA, and AOA, setting different numbers of wireless sensor nodes and varying sensing radii for the experiments. The experimental results show that the TA algorithm significantly improves coverage rates under various configurations and consistently outperforms other commonly used algorithms. © 2025, Taiwan Ubiquitous Information CO LTD.
