In this paper, we offer an approach for performing an organization-wide earned value analysis by taking advantage of the hierarchical structure of the GQM+Strategies grid. The merger enables us to create an integrated hierarchy of business goals, value goals, and strategies for achieving those goals and to monitor and evaluate those goals at all levels. It provides a means to expand the definition of earned value metrics to cover both the costs and benefits of achieving those goals through those strategies and provides measurement support for all concepts.

Cost estimation is a critical issue for software organizations. Good estimates can help us make more informed decisions (controlling and planning software risks), if they are reliable (correct) and valid (stable). In this study, we apply a variable reduction technique (based on auto-associative feed-forward neural networks – called Curvilinear component analysis) to log-linear regression functions calibrated with ordinary least squares. Based on a COCOMO 81 data set, we show that Curvilinear component analysis can improve the estimation model accuracy by turning the initial input variables into an equivalent and more compact representation. We show that, the models obtained by applying Curvilinear component analysis are more parsimonious, correct, and reliable. © 2008 Evaluation and Assessment in software engineering. In 1999 three formal-methods researchers, including the speaker, founded a company to commercialize formal modeling and verification technology for envisioned telecommunications customers. Eight years later, the company sells testing tools to embedded control software developers in the automotive, aerospace and related industries. This talk will describe the journey taken by the company during its evolution, why this journey was both less and more far than it seems, and how the speaker’s views on the practical utility of mathematically oriented software research changed along the way. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2007.

The concept of ambient intelligence requires software architectures enabling machine intelligence in unstructured dynamic environments. Research in mobile robotics tries to address this field since many years and has successfully created several architectural concepts for behaviorbased reactive systems. We describe the architectural and communication-oriented capabilities of the Modular Controller Architecture (MCA) and how ambient intelligence systems may benefit from these. Especially the shared memory approach of MCA offers a great possibility to facilitate distributed dynamic applications. MCA has been developed for mobile robotics research, initially at the FZI in Karlsruhe1 [11] and is under continuous development2. MCA addresses primitive and object-related communication, re-usability, component-based development, hardware access and application distribution. We want to take a closer look on the MCA framework and how it is already in use within an assisted living environment, established during several projects at fraunhofer IESE [9] [2] Several sensors and a mobile service unit were provided by the Robotics Research Lab3 and the MCA framework was used for service interconnection. An intelligent refrigerator, two human localisation technologies and the mobile service robot ARTOS have MCA running as described in section 3. We present our experiences with the Modular Controller Architecture regarding the parameters identified by the ubiquitous community [13]. The outline of this paper is as follows: First the architectural approaches in other projects are mentioned. The Modular Controller Architecture is described in detail, with focus on the requirements of ambient intelligence. We continue by describing our assisted living demonstrator and the services and applications relevant to this work. The software architecture is one of the most important artifacts created in the lifecycle of a software system. It enables, facilitates, hampers, or interferes directly the achievement of business goals, functional and quality requirements. One instrument to determine how adequate the architecture is for its intended usage is architecture compliance checking. This paper compares three static architecture compliance checking approaches (reflexion models, relation conformance rules, and component access rules) by assessing their applicability in 13 distinct dimensions. The results give guidance on when to use which approach.

This talk provides a personal perspective on the evolution of empirical software engineering. The evolution has included the focus of the studies, e.g., from attempting to demonstrate the effectiveness of various processes to the building of knowledge around a domain or a set of processes. The study designs have changed from strictly quantitative studies to all forms of controlled experiments, quasi-experiments, preexperimental designs, case studies, field studies, and focus group activities. There has been recognition of the importance and influence of context variables and the domain in interpreting the results of studies. The issue of meta-analysis has become more important and is still an elusive goal. A community of empiricists has evolved that allows for the replication of studies leading to the identification of context variables. But there still does not exist a community consensus on the right ways to build bodies of knowledge or a "blessed" set of approaches. We argue over what is appropriate evidence when we review papers. We struggle with the concept of experimental replication. We do not know how to break an empirical study into significant small enough chunks for publication in the various standard forums. We have not convinced the software engineering community that empirical study is a necessary or even valuable research paradigm for the field. What other problems that remain? How can they be solved? What will the future hold for empirical study? This talk will address these issues and propose a possible path towards a mature empirical software engineering discipline.

software engineering researchers are increasingly relying on the empirical approach to advance the state of the art. The level of empirical rigor and evidence required to guide software engineering research, however, can vary drastically depending on many factors. In this session we identify some of these factors through a discussion of the state of the art in performing empirical studies in software engineering, and we show how we can utilize the notion of empirical maturity to set and adjust the empirical expectations for software engineering research efforts. Regarding the state of the art in performing empirical studies, we will offer perspectives on two classes of study: those concerned with humans utilizing a technology, e.g., a person applying a methodology, a technique, or a tool, where human skills and the ability to interact with the technology are some of the primes issues, and those concerned with the application of the technology to an artifact, e.g., a technique or tool applied to a design or a program. In the first case, the emphasis is typically on issues like feasibility, usefulness, and then on effectiveness. The technology tends to be less well specified and based more on the experience and skills of the technology applier. In the second case, the emphasis is typically on the efficiency and effectiveness of the technology. The technology tends to be well defined and the assumption is that the individual skill and experience plays a less important role. We will discuss the set of factors that influence the design, implementation, and validity of these studies. Regarding empirical maturity and its implications on the SE community's expectations, we will provide examples of the large spectrum of studies with different maturity levels that can be performed to successfully support software engineering research. We will then identify and analyze the following aspects that are likely to impact a study's maturity level: technology (well-specified vs. unde

Viewing security vulnerabilities as a specific type of software defect allows proven software engineering techniques for finding and fixing them to be used early in the development of the product. Finding and fixing these problems early (i.e. at the requirements or design phase) mil reduce the overall risk and cost of tee product. This article describes the application of a previously successful early life cycle software inspection approach (perspective-based reading [PBR]) to the problem of software security. Excerpts from this tailored approach are provided along with guidance on it use.

To support decision-making for security-risk mitigation and the appropriate selection of security countermeasures, we propose a system dynamics model of the security aspects of an enterprise system. We developed such an executable model, incorporating the concept of archetypes. We present here one archetype for computer security, namely symptomatic fixes (or shifting the burden). Using simulation, we show one instance of how this archetype can be used for recognizing and diagnosing typical situations, as well as for fixing problems. The global effects of changes and behavioral trends are examined, and other instances of symptomatic fixes in security are described as well

This paper describes a replication conducted to compare the effectiveness of inspectors using Perspective Based Reading (PBR) to the effectiveness of inspectors using a checklist. The goal of this replication was to better understand the complementary aspects of the PBR perspectives. To this end, a brief discussion of the original study is provided as well as a more detailed description of the replication. A detailed statistical analysis is then provided along with analysis of the PBR perspectives. For the individual PBR perspectives, we saw an interesting dichotomy: In the original study there was little overlap among the sets of defects found by each of the three perspectives, while in the replication two of the three perspectives found similar sets of defects on one of the two documents used in the study. Interestingly this document was the only case where the users of PBR were not more effective than the users of a checklist. This result leads to a new hypothesis that the complementary aspect of the PBR perspectives is the characteristic that provides the benefit over other defect detection techniques. © Springer science + Business Media, Inc. 2006.
