"Nightly/daily building and smoke testing" have become widespread since they often reveal bugs early in the software development process. During these builds, software is compiled, linked, and (re)tested with the goal of validating its basic functionality. Although successful for conventional software, smoke tests are difficult to develop and automatically rerun for software that has a graphical user interface (GUI). In this paper, we describe a framework called DART (daily automated regression tester) that addresses the needs of frequent and automated re-testing of GUI software. The key to our success is automation: DART automates everything from structural GUI analysis; test case generation; test oracle creation; to code instrumentation; test execution; coverage evaluation; regeneration of test cases; and their re-execution. Together with the operating system's task scheduler, DART can execute frequently with little input from the developer/tester to retest the GUI software. We provide results of experiments showing the time taken and memory required for GUI analysis, test case and test oracle generation, and test execution. We also empirically compare the relative costs of employing different levels of detail in the GUI test cases.

Human capital is the main asset of software organizations. Knowledge has to be preserved and leveraged from individuals to the organization. Thus, the learning software organization will be able to continually learn and improve. Knowledge management has various components and multiple aspects such as socio-cultural, organizational, and technological. In this paper we address the technological aspect;specifically, we survey the tools available to support different knowledge management activities. We categorize these tools into classes, based on their capabilities and functionality, and show what tasks and knowledge processing operations they support. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2003.

A number of empirical studies using students as subjects has been carried out in the last few years. These studies are usually conducted as pilot experiments that allow researchers to fine-tune an experiment before deploying it in an industrial environment. Though one of the issues usually taken into account with these experiments is their external validity, other issues need to be considered, such as the usefulness of these experiments in the context of a software engineering course. This chapter concisely reports on three empirical studies performed at the Università degli Studi dell'Insubria during the ESERNET project and two other empirical studies that we carried out previously, all with students as subjects, so as to provide the context for a discussion on the research and the educational goals that should be taken into account when carrying out an experiment with students to make it successful from both an empirical and an educational viewpoint. Finally, we provide some advice on how to carry out empirical studies with students based on our experiences. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2003.

This paper investigates the pertinent question whether multi-organizational data is valuable for software project cost estimation. Local, company-specific data is widely believed to provide a better basis for accurate estimates. On the other hand, multi-organizational databases provide an opportunity for fast data accumulation and shared. information benefits. Therefore, this paper trades off the potential advantages and drawbacks of using local data as compared to multi-organizational data. Motivated by the results from previous investigations, we further analyzed a large cost database from Finland that collects standard cost factors and includes information on six individual companies. Each of these companies provided data for more than ten projects. This information was used to compare the accuracy between company-specific (local) and company-external (global) cost models. They show that company-specific models seem not to yield better results than the company external models. Our results are based on applying two standard statistical estimation methods (OLS-regression, analysis of variance) and analogy-based estimation.

Testing for software security is a lengthy, complex and costly process. Currently, security testing is done using penetration analysis and formal verification of security kernels. These methods are not complete and are difficult to use. Hence it is essential to focus testing effort in areas that have a greater number of security vulnerabilities to develop secure software as well as meet budget and time constraints. We propose a testing strategy based on a classification of vulnerabilities to develop secure and stable systems. This taxonomy will enable a system testing and maintenance group to understand the distribution of security vulnerabilities and prioritize their testing effort according to the impact the vulnerabilities have on the system. This is based on Landwehr's (1994) classification scheme for security flaws and we evaluated it using a database of 1360 operating system vulnerabilities. This analysis indicates vulnerabilities tend to be focused in relatively few areas and associated with a small number of software engineering issues.

For 25 years the NASA/GSFC software engineering Laboratory (SEL) has been a major resource in software process improvement activities. But due to a changing climate at NASA, agency reorganization, and budget cuts, the SEL has lost much of its impact. In this paper we describe the history of the SEL and give some lessons learned on what we did right, what we did wrong, and what others can learn from our experiences. We briefly describe the research that was conducted by the SEL, describe how we evolved our understanding of software process improvement, and provide a set of lessons learned and hypotheses that should enable future groups to learn from and improve on our quarter century of experiences.

software inspections are commonly used throughout the software industry, but there are still open questions about the relationship between inspection processes and inspection effectiveness. For example, which techniques work best in various environments? Are requirements specifications inspections and code inspections different in terms of effectiveness? What is the effectiveness in inspections for different group sizes? Benchmarking provides an opportunity to address such issues. This paper discusses how benchmarking may be applied for software inspections. The discussion is illustrated with an empirical study. It is shown how the data can be used to plan and manage software inspections. It is concluded that software inspections are well suited for benchmarking and that software practitioners as well as researchers can learn valuable lessons.

The requirements for neuroinformatics to make a significant impact on the field of neuroscience as a whole are not simply technical - the hardware, software, and protocols for collaborative research - they also include the legal and policy frameworks within which research is conducted. This is not least because the creation of large collaborative scientific databases amplifies the complicated interactions between proprietary, for-profit R&D and public "open science". We draw on experiences from the field of bioinformatics to examine some of the likely consequences of these interactions in neuroscience. The widespread sharing of data and tools for neuroscientific research is a key step in the development of neuroinformatics. We consider some of the areas in which policy frameworks can facilitate these forms of collaboration, by easing legal and cultural barriers which have slowed developments to date.

The software factory: An undergraduate computer science curriculum

Industry often complains that current academic curricula fail to address the practical issues of real software development. This paper outlines a proposal for an innovative core curriculum for a Bachelor of science in computer science. The proposed core curriculum contains elements of traditional computer science programs combined with software engineering via a team-oriented, hands-on approach to large-scale software development. In addition to traditional lecture/ project/exam courses, students are required to take an eight-semester sequence of ‘software Factory’ courses. software Factory courses put the students' newly acquired skills to work in a real software organization staffed and managed by all students in the program. Students from all courses in the software Factory sequence meet simultaneously to fulfill their roles in the software organization. We expect that the students will be better prepared software engineering practitioners after completing a curriculum that combines traditional courses with practical software Factory experience. © 2002, Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

Many small and medium-sized companies that develop software experience the same problems repeatedly, and have few systems in place to learn from their own mistakes as well as their own successes. Here, we propose a lightweight method to collect experience from completed software projects, and compare the results of this method to more widely applied experience reports. We find that the new method captures more information about core processes related to software development in contrast to experience reports that focus more on management processes. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2001.
