In the Internet of Things (IoT), the size constraint of those small and embedded devices limits the network lifetime because limited energy can be stored on these devices. In recent years, energy harvesting technology has attracted increasing attention, due to its ability to extend the network lifetime significantly. However, the performance of IoT devices powered by energy harvesting sources has not been fully analyzed and understood. In this paper, we model the energy harvesting process in IoT devices using slotted Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance (CSMA /CA) mechanism of IEEE 802.15.4 standard, and analyze the performance in terms of delay and throughput. Our new model successfully integrates the energy harvesting process and binary backoff process through a unified Markov chain model. Finally, the new model is validated by simulation and the throughput errors between simulation and analytical model are no more than 6%. We demonstrate the application of the model with different energy harvesting rate corresponding to different sources such as solar and vibration energy harvesters. © 2016 ACM.

Inequality of communicative capabilities, such as proficiency in a language, could be an awkward experience in real life. However, it could be a good mechanic to make games more challenging and interesting. Charades [2] is a good example, where one player tries to express a word via body language, and the other tries to guess it. We have designed Human and Dog, in which 2 players, a human and a dog, have their unique capabilities to acquire clues and cooperate to solve a series of puzzles. © 2016 Authors.

Wearable devices, which are small electronic devices worn on a human body, are equipped with low level of processing and storage capacities and offer some types of integrated functionalities. Recently, wearable device is becoming increasingly popular, various kinds of wearable device are launched in the market;however, wearable devices require a powerful local-hub, most are smartphone, to replenish processing and storage capacities for advanced functionalities. Sometime it may be inconvenient to carry the local-hub (smartphone);thus, many wearable devices are equipped with Wi-Fi interface, enabling them to exchange data with local-hub though the Internet when the local-hub is not nearby. However, this results in long response time and restricted functionalities. In this paper, we present a virtual local-hub solution, which utilizes network equipment nearby (e.g., Wi-Fi APs) as the local-hub. Since migrating all applications serving the wearable devices respectively takes too much networking and storage resources, the proposed solution deploys function modules to multiple network nodes and enables remote function module sharing among different users and applications. To reduce the impact of the solution on the network bandwidth, we propose a heuristic algorithm for function module allocation with the objective of minimizing total bandwidth consumption. We conduct series of experiments, and the results show that the proposed solution can reduce the bandwidth consumption by up to half and still serve all requests given a large number of service requests. © 2016 ACM.

How to tolerate fault is a fundamental requirement to the designs of many cyber-physical systems. Devices or sensors might have different requirements on their levels of reliability and/or timely services in the composition of a cyber-physical system. In this work, a system framework is explored to virtualize devices/sensors and service migration is considered during run time, so that faults are masked and the timeliness in services is enhanced. In particular, a disaster messaging system supporting seamlessly service recovery in small and large scale network is developed and evaluated, where an acceptable level of connectivity in the face of numerous faults for responsive deliveries of information critical to the success of emergency response and rescue operations. The framework also takes into account the energy consumption and reliability of sensing services, while using different types of memory components. Last but not least, augmented sensing using smart phones allows users to receive the sensed information nearby;this is critical when communication infrastructures are damaged. © 2016 ACM.

Even though 3D flash memory presents a grand opportunity to huge-capacity non-volatile memory, it suffers from serious program disturbance problems. In contrast to the past efforts in error correction codes and the work in trading the space utilization for reliability, we propose a disturbance-relaxation scheme that can alleviate the negative effects caused by program disturbance inside a physical block. This scheme does not introduce any extra overheads on encoding or storing of extra redundant data. In particular, a methodology is proposed to reduce the data error rate by distributing unavoidable disturbance errors to the flash-memory space of invalid data, with the considerations of the physical organization of 3D flash memory. A series of experiments was conducted based on real multi-layer 3D flash chips, and it showed that the proposed scheme could significantly enhance the reliability of 3D flash memory. © 2015 IEEE.

In recent years, a large volume of natural signal data has become available for scientists because of the maturity of sensor techniques. However, the sensor data can form huge data streams that are non-linear and non-stationary. Existing methods cannot process such a large volume of data efficiently with a single CPU because of the high complexity of the algorithms. In this paper, we present Massive Parallelism GPU-Optimized Adaptive Data Analysis (MG-ADA), a new parallel signal data analysis algorithm that utilizes General-Purpose Graphics Programming Unit (GPGPU) to improve data scalability and reduce computation time for large non-linear and non-stationary datasets. We propose effective strategies to significantly improve the efficiency and scalability of MG-ADA. Our experimental results show that MG-ADA provides high scalability and significantly reduces the processing time in large datasets compared to other baseline algorithms.

The small cell technology is proposed to provide wireless transmission services in the indoor environment and offload the traffic from a macro cell. Because of the small coverage of a small cell, there are usually a large number of small cells deployed in the mobile network, and it is likely that there are no User Equipments (UEs) in a small cell. A small cell may be idle most of the time and waste energy. In this paper, we propose a Connection-Driven (CD) mechanism for energy saving of small cells, where a small cell in the sleep mode is woken up when there are UEs (that have ongoing dedicated bearers) within its service area. We propose an analytical model and simulation experiments to investigate the performance of the CD mechanism.

Communication among devices in machine-to-machine (M2M) and Internet-of-Things (IoT) systems is an essential feature for these systems. For the sake of simplicity and reliability, many M2M and IoT solutions support homogeneous/single network deployment. However, when the complexity of the system and the number of device vendors continue to grow, it is challenging, if not impossible, to build M2M and IoT systems with devices using single communication protocol. The targeted problem of this paper is to enable the communication among devices in heterogeneous networks. Multiple Protocol Transport Network (MPTN) gateway is designed to be a distributed messaging gateway to enable messaging among multiple networks. To leverage the routing capability in existing network protocols, MPTN gateway converts an end-to-end message request to a multiple segment message based on network topology. The protocol schedules periodic routing table update to pro-actively keep the routing table up to dates with long time intervals, and allows on-demand route update to shorten the delay on topology and connectivity change. The performance evaluation results show that the protocol completes the table update within tens of milliseconds when there are more than ten devices in a system. © 2015 ACM.

Recently, wireless sensor networks are being increasingly integrated with consumer electronic devices to deliver more intelligent services. Usually, the wireless sensor networks are expected to provide continuous, unattended service for months or even years. However, hardware reliability poses a major challenge to this expectation. To address this issue, this paper designs and implements a software-based minimal-overhead fault detection method to detect failures in various hardware components. The fault detection scheme has been implemented in the SOS kernel on the sensor nodes. Experimental results indicate that except for the memory access trap, most failures can be successfully detected through low-cost software detectors.

Recently, Cisco has predicted that there will be an explosive growth of the mobile data traffic such that video streaming will account for nearly 70% total demand. To foresee such heavy burden in each eNB, Device-to-Device (D2D) technology is a promising solution to do data offloading while maintain acceptable service quality. In this paper, we first target on two different D2D interfaces, Wi-Fi and LTE direct, and propose an efficient multi-radio selection scheme by dynamic programming design approach for video streaming in wireless cellular networks. To minimize total LTE radio resource usage, we leverage D2D technology and adaptively select the different transmission links to meet QoS requirement of each user. Since the data rate of Wi-Fi transmission link is hard to correctly evaluate, we conduct a series of experiments under realistic interference environment to measure the actual capacity of Wi-Fi transmission links. Besides, we also study related works about general capacity predict model to take both measurement and mathematical model into consideration for designing our solution. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme can significantly reduce the LTE radio resource usage and successfully do data offloading for each eNB in wireless cellular networks.
