During the usage of conventional stereo microscope, repetitive head movement are often inevitable for the users to retrieve information away from the microscope. Moreover, risks of surgeons loosing focus and increasing fatigue could also arise during microsurgeries. Therefore, Scope+, a stereoscopic video see-through augmented reality system was created not only to solve the problems mentioned above, but also to improve users stereo microscopic experience.

During the process of using conventional stereo microscope, users need to move their head away from the eyepieces repeatedly to access more information, such as anatomy structures from an atlas. It happens during microsurgery if surgeons want to check patients data again. You might lose your target and your concentration after this kind of disruption. To solve this critical problem and to improve the user experience of stereo microscope, we present Scope+, a stereoscopic video see-through augmented reality system. Scope+ is designed for biological procedures, education and surgical training. While performing biological procedures, for example, dissection of a frog, anatomical atlas will show up inside the head mounted display (HMD) overlaid onto the magnified images. For education purpose, the specimens will no longer be silent under Scope+. When their body parts are pointed by a marked stick, related animation or transparent background video will merge with the real object and interact with observers. If surgeons want to improve their techniques of microsurgery, they can practice with Scope+ which provides complete foot pedal control functions identical to standard surgical microscope. Moreover, cooperating with special designed phantom models, this augmented reality system will guide you to perform some key steps of operation, such as Continuous Curvilinear Capsulorhexis in cataract surgery. Video see-through rather than optical see-through technology is adopt by Scope+ system, therefore remote observation via another Scope+ or web applications can be achieved. This feature can not only assist teachers during experiment classes, but also help researchers keep their eyes on the observables after work. Array mode is powered by the motor-driven stage plate which allows users to load multiple samples at the same time. Quick comparison between samples is possible when switching them by the foot pedal.

In this paper we describe a scheduling framework that allocates resources to both batch jobs and interactive jobs simultaneously in a private cloud with a static amount of resources. In the system, every job has an individual service level agreement (SLA), and violating the SLA incurs penalty. We propose a model to formally quantify the SLA violation penalty of both batch and interactive jobs. The analysis on the interactive jobs focuses on queuing analysis and response time. The analysis on batch jobs focuses on the non-preemptive job scheduling for multiple processing units. Based on this model we also propose algorithms to estimate the penalty for both batch jobs and interactive jobs, and algorithms that reduce the total SLA violation penalty. Our experiment results suggest that our system effectively reduces the total penalty by allocating the right amount of resources to heterogeneous jobs in a private cloud system.

Many enterprises or institutes are building private clouds within their own data centers. Data centers may have different batches of physical machines due to annual upgrades, but the number of machines is fixed most of the time. Consequently it is crucial to schedule jobs with different resource requirements and characteristics to meet different job timing constraints, in such heterogeneous yet most of the time static environments. This paper describes a cloud resource management framework that dynamically allocates and reallocates computation resources for jobs that have different requirements, including deadline and priority. This framework makes decisions according to specified policies, and the framework provides four default policies for system administrators to choose to fit their specific needs. The framework is designed to be component-pluggable. The components of the framework can be hot-swapped, i.e., Replaced without shutting down the services. In addition, the framework can work as an individual cloud computing system, or as an extension of an existing cloud system. Our experiment results demonstrate that our system is capable of dynamically adjusting the resource allocation plan according to run-time statistics collected. The system also tolerates hardware failures, and will dynamically reallocate workers to compensate for the downtime in order to finish the jobs before deadline. Our experiments also suggest a trade-off between priority and deadline.

Graphics-intensive mobile games are becoming increasingly popular, but such applications place high demand on device CPUs and GPUs. The design of current mobile systems results in unnecessary energy waste due to lack of consideration of application phases and user attention (a “demand-level” gap) and because each processor administers power management autonomously (a “processor-level” gap). This paper proposes a user-centric CPU-GPU governing framework which aims to reduce energy consumption without significantly impacting the user experience. To bridge the gap at the demand level, we identify the user demand at runtime and accordingly determine appropriate governing policies for the respective processors. On the other hand, to bridge the gap at the processor level, the proposed framework interprets the frequency scaling intents of processors based on the observation of the CPU-GPU interaction and the processor status. We implemented our framework on a Samsung Galaxy S4, and conducted extensive experiments with real-world 3D gaming apps. Experimental results showed that, for an application being highly interactive and frequent phase changing, our proposed framework can reduce energy consumption by 45.1% compared with state-of-the-art policy without significantly impacting the user experience.

Data conversion has become an emerging topic in BigData era. To face the challenge of rapid data growth, legacy or existing relational databases have the need to convert into NoSQL column-family database in order to achieve better scalability. The conversion from SQL to NoSQL databases requires combining small, normalized SQL data tables into larger NoSQL data tables;a process called denormalization. A challenging issues in data conversion is how to group the denormalized columns in a large data table into "families" in order to ensure the performance of query processing. In this paper, we propose an efficient heuristic algorithm, GPA (Graph-based Partition Algorithm), to address this problem. We use TPC-C and TPC-H benchmarks to demonstrate that, the column-families produced by GPA is very efficient for large scale data processing.

Relying on the knowledge of the pricing benefit of long-term reserved resource and multiplexing gains, cloud broker strives to minimize its cost by utilizing infrastructure resources from public cloud service provider. Different reserved instance terms accompanied by different prices are provisioned by the provider. How to choose the appropriate ones from various terms to meet the dynamic user demands at the least cost is a great challenge. This paper addresses the challenge by two algorithms. Extensive real world traces driven evaluations show that the heuristic algorithm runs about twice as fast as the approximation one, while both algorithms can save almost the same resource cost up to 27%. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2015.

As mobile devices become increasingly popular, traffic through data centers is increasing rapidly. Cisco has predicted that data center traffic will reach 7.7 Zettabytes in 2017, of which 76% will be generated by the internal exchange of data. Recent research has revealed a severe problem of congestion in data centers that is called TCP Incast. TCP Incast will significantly prolong the time of completion of jobs, degrading the performance of application services. The main reason for TCP Incast is many-to-one communication, which causes the switch buffer to overflow. Hence, in this paper, a method for detecting and controlling congestion of traffic at a data center is proposed. The goal is to detect and solve the problem of congestion. The system is tested in a real data center and demonstrated to detect TCP Incast accurately. Furthermore, application layer solutions for TCP Incast are implemented and the TCP Incast problem is interestingly found to continue to arise occasionally, because application layer solutions have only static environment parameters as their input parameters. The adaptation of the mechanism for detecting and controlling TCP Incast warrants future study.

Machine-to-machine (M2M) allows autonomous computation systems to communicate with each other and to collaborately accomplish the works without human intervention. Each node in M2M network may have different communication interface such as Zig-bee, Z-wave and Wi-Fi. We design a routing framework that can enable M2M to transmit data across heterogeneous network interfaces via selecting a routing path under given transmission policy. The framework can work in the dynamic network environment, such as including a new node or losting an existin node, the framework will reconstruct the route automatically without developer/administrator instruction at run-time. A new node broadcasts a route exploration message to the network when it joins to the network. Every node updates the routing table to the new node according to the exploration message. Then the new node will send request message to the neighbors to receive the reply messages from them. After collecting the reply messages, the new node can then build the routing table itself. When a node detects a connection failure, it can recover the routing table from nearby neighbors. The experiment results show that we show that the meta-route framework determine throughput policy with high throughput and high energy consumption, and energy policy with low throughput and low energy consumption. © 2014 ACM.
