One way to increase solar photovoltaic penetration in the grid is management of voltage fluctuations. This is because a photovoltaic plant cannot be interconnected to the grid if it causes voltage violations. Voltage violation is where voltage exceeds the acceptable range. Often, grid operators request photovoltaic plant owners to regulate voltage sufficiently with expensive and space-consuming static Var compensators. Unfortunately, this sometimes makes the project less feasible. This paper argues that there are better ways to regulate voltage. We ran a simulation with a 70 MWp photovoltaic plant as an addition to the grid. Without voltage regulation, voltage violations were found to be significant. This paper found that oversizing the inverter sufficiently would remove all voltage violations without deploying a static Var compensator. This is often a cheaper and space-saving solution for voltage management. This paper argues that economics and spatial efficiency of reactive power compensation devices is key to increasing photovoltaic penetration. © 2023 IEEE.

Fabrication of SiC particle dispersed AZ91D magnesium alloy composite by injection molding method and their properties

AZ91D magnesium alloy chips were coated with SiC powder using a binder, and injection molding was attempted using SiC powder coated magnesium chips as raw material. The metallurgical structure of the injection molded products showed uniform dispersion of SiC particles in the matrix, and there were no significant defects such as voids at the SiC particle-matrix interface. The hardness and 0.2% proof stress of the injection molded products tended to improve with increasing SiC content, while the elongation decreased with increasing SiC content. The Young's modulus of the injection molded products improved with increasing SiC content. It was confirmed that the specific bending rigidity of the injection molded products also improves due to the significant increase in the Young's modulus, although the addition of SiC leads to an increase in density. © 2024 The Japan Institute of Light Metals.

The Internet of Drones (IoD) extends the capabilities of unmanned aerial vehicles, enabling them to participate in a connected network. In IoD infrastructure, drones communicate not only among themselves but also with users and a control center. This interconnected communication framework holds promise for various applications, from collaborative decision-making to real-time data exchange. However, the expansion of communication in IoD also introduces new challenges, particularly in terms of security, privacy and authentication. Unfortunately, the current authentication protocols are inadequate in offering robust security features against various attacks in the IoD environment. To address these security issues and limitations, we proposed a secure protocol for the IoD environment using chaotic maps and hash functions. In addition, we also employed a physically unclonable function in the development of the proposed protocol. We assess the security of the protocol through both informal and formal security analysis. The formal security analysis is conducted through a widely used random or real (RoR) model. The informal analysis shows the rigorous security features against various attacks, such as masquerading, anonymity violation, and physical cloning attacks. Moreover, we compare the performance of the devised protocol with similar existing protocols across important performance parameters, such as communication overhead, computation overhead, and security features. The devised protocol provides a 67.86% and 17.80% reduction in computation and communication overheads, respectively, as compared to related protocols. The analysis demonstrates the proposed protocol's capacity to support secure communication in the IoD environment and satisfy desirable security attributes. © 2014 IEEE.

Speech emotion recognition (SER) is the process of identifying the emotional characteristics of speech. The efficiency of emotional characteristics extracted from the speech is essential for SER performances. Neural networks based on various deep learning (DL) models have been investigated for SER. The existing SER studies mostly concentrate on a few languages with rich resources. SER for Bangla is very limited although it is a major mother language in the world. This study focused on Bangla SER (BSER) using 3D convolutional neural networks (CNN) and bidirectional long short-term memory networks (Bi-LSTM).The use of various speech signal transformations, using the Short-time Fourier Transform (STFT), Chroma STFT, and Mel-frequency Cepstral Coefficient (MFCC), is the significant challenge of this research. Transformed features of three different methodologies are integrated to set into the 3D CNN block for feature extraction. The time distributed layer’s input is set by flattening the deep features. To classify the emotion, the time distributed layer’s output is put into a bidirectional LSTM layer. The proposed model performed better than comparable recent methods when evaluated on a corpus of emotional speech in Bangla. © 2023, ICST Institute for computer sciences, Social Informatics and Telecommunications Engineering.

In this paper, we propose algorithms for handling non-integer strides in sampling-frequency-independent (SFI) convolutional and transposed convolutional layers. The SFI layers have been developed for handling various sampling frequencies (SFs) by a single neural network. They are replaceable with their non-SFI counterparts and can be introduced into various network architectures. However, they could not handle some specific configurations when combined with non-SFI layers. For example, an SFI extension of Conv-TasNet, a standard audio source separation model, cannot handle some pairs of trained and target SFs because the strides of the SFI layers become non-integers. This problem cannot be solved by simple rounding or signal resampling, resulting in the significant performance degradation. To overcome this problem, we propose algorithms for handling non-integer strides by using windowed sinc interpolation. The proposed algorithms realize the continuous-time representations of features using the interpolation and enable us to sample instants with the desired stride. Experimental results on music source separation showed that the proposed algorithms outperformed the rounding- and signal-resampling-based methods at SFs lower than the trained SF. © 2023 European Signal Processing Conference, EUSIPCO. Cross-view geo-localization in GNSS-denied environments aims to determine an unknown location by matching drone-view images with the correct geo-tagged satellite-view images from a large gallery. Recent research shows that learning discriminative image representations under specific weather conditions can significantly enhance performance. However, the frequent occurrence of unseen extreme weather conditions hinders progress. This paper introduces MCGF, a Multi-weather Cross-view Geo-localization Framework designed to dynamically adapt to unseen weather conditions. MCGF establishes a joint optimization between image restoration and geo-localization using denoising diffusion models. For image restoration, MCGF incorporates a shared encoder and a lightweight restoration module to help the backbone eliminate weather-specific information. For geo-localization, MCGF uses EVA-02 as a backbone for feature extraction, with cross-entropy loss for training and cosine distance for testing. Extensive experiments on University160k-WX demonstrate that MCGF achieves competitive results for geo-localization in varying weather conditions. © 2024 Owner/Author.

Virtual Reality(VR)is a key industry for the development of the digital economy in the *** VR has advantages in terms of mobility,lightweight and cost-effectiveness,which has gradually become the mainstream implementation of *** this paper,a mobile VR video adaptive transmission mechanism based on intelligent caching and hierarchical buffering strategy in Mobile Edge Computing(MEC)-equipped 5G networks is proposed,aiming at the low latency requirements of mobile VR services and flexible buffer management for VR video adaptive *** support VR content proactive caching and intelligent buffer management,users’behavioral similarity and head movement trajectory are jointly used for viewpoint *** tile-based content is proactively cached in the MEC nodes based on the popularity of the VR ***,a hierarchical buffer-based adaptive update algorithm is presented,which jointly considers bandwidth,buffer,and predicted viewpoint status to update the tile chunk in client ***,according to the decomposition of the problem,the buffer update problem is modeled as an optimization problem,and the corresponding solution algorithms are ***,the simulation results show that the adaptive caching algorithm based on 5G intelligent edge and hierarchical buffer strategy can improve the user experience in the case of bandwidth fluctuations,and the proposed viewpoint prediction method can significantly improve the accuracy of viewpoint prediction by 15%.

P2P-assisted distributed-server content delivery of 8K media : a DLT-based approach

In this paper we study the problem of multi-source, P2P-assisted, multimedia content delivery of 8K content. Such media constitute a big challenge for contemporary VoD services, as their media rate can surpass the clients’ upload/download speeds. Our proposed methods tackle this shortcoming while also allowing a reduction in the server resource consumption. Two methods are presented and evaluated, that include global and local multi-installment schemes, that are shown to surpass server-only or non-DLT-based content distribution by a fair margin, in all the significant metrics. Our methods can either offer a significant improvement in access time or a boost in the number of clients served, while at the same time reducing the consumed server resources. The performance of the proposed methods is evaluated with a rigorous simulation study based on the current state of the Internet on two geographic locations that represent best-case and average-case scenarios. Our findings suggest that the methodology used to assign the content parts to individual sources, has a big influence of the consumption of server resources, the system’s scalability and service quality. One of the proposed methods (LMI) achieves a maximum of 70.5% improvement on the average client access time, while saving up to 23% of server resources. Based on the system settings the reduced access-time/faster access to content can be balanced against an increase in the served clients by up to 25%. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.

This research proposes to develop an adaptive ontology-based learning support system for computer programming learning. Firstly, the system adopts a previously developed ontology called CONTINUOUS, which represents programming concepts and their relation in a graph and makes use of its content to serve as hints within programming questions. Secondly, we design an adaptive strategy for recommending suitable exercises to learners, which uses CONTINUOUS as metadata of exercises and the Elo rating system to estimate learners' skills. This work aims to design a system to provide personalized exercise path for the learner and evaluate its effectiveness. © 2023 Asia-Pacific Society for computers in Education.
