In the last decade, the possibility to noninvasively estimate cortical activity has been highlighted by the application of the techniques known as high resolution EEG. These techniques include a subject's multi-compartment head model (scalp, skull, dura mater, cortex) constructed from individual magnetic resonance images, multi-dipole source model, and regularized linear inverse source estimates of cortical current density. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate that the use of cortical activity estimated from noninvasive EEG recordings of motor imagery is useful in the context of a brain computer interface as compared with others scalp spatial filters usually used on-line

We present the design and fabrication of a large portable 3D immersive display device (U screen). A large screen is formed into an oval, and 3D images are projected using two projectors. The user feels immersed in the projected image because the screen fills peripheral vision. This device is composed of simple parts, so it can be assembled quickly yet still deliver a accurate image. We introduce the design and assembly of the device, and evaluate its performance.

Long hours of automobile driving under monotonous situations may cause the lowering of what we term a driver's activation state (DAS) or in other words the production of drowsiness, resulting in an increased risk of a traffic accident. There is therefore a need to create a newly advanced system focused on the DAS in-car, hopefully thus avoiding potentially dangerous situations. In order to develop such a system as a final goal, we have firstly set out to acquire such cardiovascular variables as beat-by-beat blood pressure (BP), RR interval from ECG and normalized pulse volume (NPV) used as a peripheral vascular tone of alpha-adrenergic sympathetic activity, during presentation to the driver of a screen movie simulating monotonous travel at constant speed on a test-course. Subsequently, we have investigated the reactivity in terms of the driver's cardiovascular hemodynamics. Through the successful monitoring of cardiovascular parameters during the movie presentation obtained in 11 healthy male subjects, the following results were obtained: The monotonous driving produces a statistically significant gradual rise in BP following drowsiness, which could be explained by enhancement of sympathetic activity using a time-frequency analysis of BP and RR. This finding strongly indicates that continuous driving in such monotonous situations can make a driver considerably stressful and thus may cause a gradual increase in BP, and that this gradual BP increase may be used as a possible index relevant to the DAS. This finding was also confirmed by the analysis of NPV, suggesting that the gradual increase in BP during the monotonous driving would be rather caused by a regulation of peripheral vasomotor constriction

The proper elicitation and specification of functional and non-functional requirements of an information system in a given environment is the first and the most critical task for the software developers today. The next critical activity is to properly understand these requirements so as to map them on to various design artifacts. In this paper, with the help of the requirements model, we present the behaviour part in the specification of requirements. We explain the behaviour in the specification with the help of dependencies using a mathematical model and a tree/graph so as to enhance the complete understanding of the requirements specification of the information system.

The objective of this research is to optimize the designing parameters of the parallel manipulator with large orientation workspace at the boundary position of the constant orientation workspace (COW). The method uses a simple genetic algorithm (SGA) while considering three different kinematic performance indices: COW and the global conditioning index (GCI) to evaluate the mechanism's dexterity for translational motion of an end-effector, and orientation workspace of two angle of Euler angles to obtain the large rotation angle of an end-effector at the boundary position of COW. Total fifteen cases divided according to the combination of the circle radius of COW and rotation angle of orientation workspace are studied, and an optimized model is proposed as a best model by relative comparison of them on the basis of the pre-existing model

Recently, fully-implantable middle ear hearing devices (F-IMEHD) to enhance the hearing ability of auditory impaired persons have been developed in several countries. The implantable hearing device requires an external controller and a non-invasive power transmitter for recharging an internal battery of the device. This study shows the implementation of an inductively coupled control unit to be able to recharge the battery and transmit a control signal to the implanted device by designing the structure of coupled antennas and the data protocol using an on-off keying modulation. The implemented control unit has the advantages that it makes the implanted device reduce the power consumption and increase a recharging interval by externally supplying the power of a control signal receiver instead of using an internal battery. Through the experimental results, it has been verified that the implemented control unit has the performance of transmitting power and control signal to a F-IMEHD
