The result lists of popular Web search engines represent retrieved documents with only a title, a brief textual summary and a URL. We present a novel approach that incorporates visualization into the conventional search result interface. For each resulting document, occurrences of the entire query are concisely depicted in the form of a small, document-shaped icon. An 18-participant user study was carried out to compare our design with the traditional search result list in terms of accuracy and task performance. Though statistically significant differences in performance were not observed, the participants' subjective ratings and opinions of the visualization's utility were positive. Despite the fact that the visualization introduces a new and somewhat complicated variable to consider when evaluating search result lists, the participants' performance did not fall below their performance level with the traditional interface. Our findings indicate the need to study such interfaces in a longitudinal setting.
Implicit relevance feedback (IRF) is the process by which a search system unobtrusively gathers evidence on searcher interests from their interaction with the system. IRF is a new method of gathering information on us...

computer interfaces provide information to users mostly graphically. This method of presentation is not suitable for the visually impaired or for users in situations where interaction is limited, like in mobile context. One possibility to present information to these kinds of users would be using melodic sounds and haptic feedback to replace graphical information. We describe a new method to redistribute graphical information to melodic sounds and haptic cues with a stick interface. We discuss the impact of this redistribution to user behavior in simple shape recognition tasks. Appropriateness of redistribution is evaluated and design recommendations given based on user behavior in modal-redistributed interaction.

In this paper, we investigate how the choice of media for capture and access affects the diary study method. The diary study is a method of understanding participant behavior and intent in situ that minimizes the effects of observers on participants. We first situate diary studies within a framework of field studies and review related literature. We then report on three diary studies we conducted that involve photographs, audio recordings, location information and tangible artifacts. We then analyze our findings, specifically addressing the following questions: How do context information and episodic memory prompts captured by participants vary with media? In what way do different media "jog" memory? How do different media affect the diary study process? These questions are particularly important for diary studies because they can be especially useful as compared to other methods when a participant intends to do an action but does not or when actions are particularly difficult to sense. We also built and tested a tool based on participant and researcher frustrations with the method. Our contribution includes suggested modifications to traditional diary techniques that enable annotation and review of captured media;a new variation on the diary study appropriate for researchers using digital capture media;and a lightweight tool to support it, motivated by past work and findings from our studies. Constructed Narratives is a tangible social interface designed for use in public spaces where people have the opportunity to encounter the game and subsequently learn about each other. The hardware and software system architecture developed for this project could be applied for experimental computer-based interfaces for-several humancomputerinteraction domains including collaborative learning (CSCL), and collaborative design activities in the tradition of computer supported collaborative work (CSCW). The current domain explored for Constructed Narratives is that of computer systems designed to enable shared experience through play, or computer supported collaborative play (CSCP).
