Recently, researches and developments for measuring and modeling of human body are taking much attention. Our aim is to capture accurate shape of human foot, using 2D images acquired by multiple cameras, which can capture dynamic behavior of the object. In this paper, 3D active shape models is used for accurate reconstruction of surface shape of human foot. We apply principal component analysis (PCA) of human shape database, so that we can represent human's foot shape by approximately 12 principal component shapes. Because of the reduction of dimensions for representing the object shape, we can efficiently recover the object shape from multi-camera images, even though the object shape is partially occluded in some of input views. To demonstrate the proposed method, two kinds of experiments are presented: high accuracy reconstruction of human foot in a virtual reality environment with CG multi-camera images and in real world with eight CCD cameras. In those experiments, the recovered shape error with our method is around 2mm, while the error is around 4mm with volume intersection method.

A portfolio is an useful method to calculate the rate of expected earnings and risks based on changes in stock prices. However, past methods such as the fundamental analysis, the technical analysis and etc. are not proposed as a decision support system available for real investments. On the other hand, speaking about the asset allocation, those methods determine asset allocation ratio using general indices such as TOPIX independently of the portfolio selections. This paper describes a novel decision support system for assisting in actual investment decisions. First, the system makes a stock investment brand selection using SOM (self-organizing maps). Secondly, the system calculates asset allocation ratio of risk/nonrisk assets using both fuzzy reasoning and the management indices of the brands selected by SOM. We apply this method to actual stock price data and show better results than those by TOPIX. Finally, we discuss an effectiveness of the proposed support system against a steep fall in stock prices, such as IT Bubble collapse that began in 2000.

This paper presents a feasibility study of using socially-aware autonomous robots to assist hospitals in reducing the effects of nursing shortages. A hands-off assistive robot is described that provides motivation and support for cardiac patients who must perform regular but painful breathing exercises. Initial validation of the system has garnered positive responses from test subjects and shows that robots have a potential to aid nursing staff in some tasks requiring patient interaction.

Effective communication between a person and a robot may depend on whether there exists a common ground of understanding between the two. In two experiments modelled after human-human studies we examined how people form a mental model of a robot’s factual knowledge. Participants estimated the robot’s knowledge by extrapolating from their own knowledge and from information about the robot’s origin and language. These results suggest that designers of humanoid robots must attend not only to the social cues that robots emit but also to the information people use to create mental models of a robot.

We propose a training algorithm for multi-layered neural-network (NN) classifiers that improves the generalization ability, the ability to classify previously unseen patterns. A correlation term was added to the error function of the standard back-propagation (BP) learning algorithm, and a new weight update rule was derived. The correlation term was to make hidden node activations positively correlated, and thus we called the algorithm the positive correlation learning (PCL). The PCL was tested with the standard benchmark problems, the breast cancer and diabetes problems, and the results exhibited that it can produce networks with high generalization ability. It has been known that the minimization of the information in hidden node activations, as well as decaying weights, improves the generalization performance. We here show empirically that the PCL not only reduces the information but also decays the weights effectively
