This paper describes the computer supported ubiquitous learning system and the social interaction between learners. We define the ubiquitous learning with five prime attributes, and present a generalized social interaction support model for the ubiquitous learning. Moreover, in order to support learners with increasing social skill, a solution for constructing social interaction in ubiquitous learning environment is designed, which includes three major functions; encounter, communication and collaboration support functions.

In this paper, we consider the use of multiple acoustic features of the speech signal for robust speech recognition. We investigate the combination of various auditory based (mel frequency cepstrum coefficients, perceptual linear prediction, etc.) and articulatory based (voicedness) features. Features are combined by linear discriminant analysis and log-linear model combination based techniques. We describe the two feature combination techniques and compare the experimental results. Experiments performed on the large-vocabulary task VerbMobil II (German conversational speech) show that the accuracy of automatic speech recognition systems can be improved by the combination of different acoustic features.

The comparison of structural subsites in proteins is increasingly relevant to the prediction of their biological function. To address this problem, we present the Match Augmentation algorithm (MA). Given a structural motif of interest, such as a functional site, MA searches a target protein structure for a match: the set of atoms with the greatest geometric and chemical similarity. MA is extremely efficient because it exploits the fact that the amino acids in a structural motif are not equally important to function. Using motif residues ranked on functional significance via the Evolutionary Trace (ET), MA prioritizes its search by initially forming matches with functionally significant residues, then, guided by ET, it augments this partial match stepwise until the whole motif is found. With this hierarchical strategy, MA runs considerably faster than other methods, and almost always identifies matches in homologs known to have cognate functional sites. Second, in order to interpret matches, we further introduce a statistical method using nonparametric density estimation of the frequency distribution of structural matches. Our results show that the hierarchy of functional importance within structural motifs speeds up the search within targets, and points to a new method to score their statistical significance.

A novel advanced robotic residence, Intelligent Sweet Home (ISH), is developed at KAIST, Korea for testing advanced concepts for independent living of the elderly and the physically handicapped. The work focuses on human-friendly technical solutions for motion/mobility assistance, health monitoring, and advanced human-machine interfaces that provide easy control of both assistive devices and home-installed appliances. To improve the inhabitant's comfort, an intelligent bed, intelligent wheelchair and mechatronic transfer robot were developed. And, various interfaces based on hand gestures and voice, and health monitoring system were studied. This paper emphasizes the realization scheme of Intelligent Sweet Home and user evaluation by a physically handicapped person.

This paper summarizes progress to date on the WSU model for engineering mathematics education, an NSF funded curriculum reform initiative at Wright State University. The WSU model seeks to increase student retention, motivation and success in engineering through application-driven, just-in-time engineering math instruction. The WSU approach begins with the development of a novel freshman-level engineering mathematics course (EGR 101). Taught by engineering faculty, the course includes lecture, laboratory and recitation components. Using an application-oriented, hands-on approach, the course addresses only the salient math topics actually used in a variety of core engineering courses. These include the traditional physics, engineering mechanics, electric circuits and computer programming sequences. The EGR 101 course replaces traditional math prerequisite requirements for the above core courses, so that students can advance in the engineering curriculum without having completed a traditional freshman calculus sequence. This has enabled a significant restructuring of the engineering curriculum, including the placement of formerly sophomore-level engineering courses within the freshman year. The WSU model concludes with the development of a revised engineering mathematics sequence, to be taught by the math department later in the curriculum. The result has shifted the traditional emphasis on math prerequisite requirements to an emphasis on engineering motivation for math, with a just-in-time placement of the new math sequence. The current paper summarizes the motivation, goals and development to date of the WSU model, which is currently in its first year of implementation. The paper reflects modifications since the approach was first reported one year ago, and includes a preliminary assessment of student performance and perception during the first run of EGR 101.

This paper describes a system called STeP/spl ***/IN (standing for socio-technical platform for in situ networking) that assists software developer to find and learn Java API libraries. It provides individualized search interface for Java developers, examples that illustrate the usage, and more distinctively a facilitating mechanism that connects Java developers to exchange expertise based on their expertise and social relations. STeP/spl ***/IN is designed and developed based on the dynamic community theory, a new collaboration form that we have proposed.

Background: Proteomic peptide profiling is an emerging technology harbouring great expectations to enable early detection, enhance diagnosis and more clearly define prognosis of many diseases. Although previous research work has illustrated the ability of proteomic data to discriminate between cases and controls, significantly less attention has been paid to the analysis of feature selection strategies that enable learning of such predictive models. Feature selection, in addition to classification, plays an important role in successful identification of proteomic biomarker panels. Methods: We present a new, efficient, multivariate feature selection strategy that extracts useful feature panels directly from the high-throughput spectra. The strategy takes advantage of the characteristics of surface-enhanced laser desorption/ionisation time-of-flight mass spectrometry (SELDI-TOF-MS) profiles and enhances widely used univariate feature selection strategies with a heuristic based on multivariate de-correlation filtering. We analyse and compare two versions of the method: one in which all feature pairs must adhere to a maximum allowed correlation (MAC) threshold, and another in which the feature panel is built greedily by deciding among best univariate features at different MAC levels. Results: The analysis and comparison of feature selection strategies was carried out experimentally on the pancreatic cancer dataset with 57 cancers and 59 controls from the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA. The analysis was conducted in both the whole-profile and peak-only modes. The results clearly show the benefit of the new strategy over univariate feature selection methods in terms of improved classification performance. Conclusion: Understanding the characteristics of the spectra allows us to better assess the relative importance of potential features in the diagnosis of cancer. Incorporation of these characteristics into feature selection strat

We introduce an annotation-based rescue assistance system for a teleoperated unmanned helicopter with an wearable augmented reality (AR) environment. In this system, an operator controls the helicopter remotely while watching an annotated view from the helicopter through a head mounted display (HMD) with a laptop PC in a backpack. Virtual buildings and textual annotations assist the rescue operation indicating the position to search rapidly and intensively. The position and the attitude of the helicopter is measured by a GPS and a gyroscope, and sent to the operator's PC via a wireless LAN. Using this system, we conducted experiments to find persons and verified the feasibility.
