The paper presents an innovative approach, Semantic Regions that are rectangular regions directly drawn on 2D space with semantics so that their layout can form users' various mental models toward the personal media data. A prototype personal media exploring application, MediaFinder, based on the concept of Semantic Regions is presented. Usability tests will be conducted to evaluate the Semantic Regions as a personal media management model including organization, search, navigation, indexing, meaning extraction, and distribution.

In this paper, we introduce an architecture for a new generation of speech applications. The presented architecture is based on our previous work with multilingual speech applications and extends it by introducing support for synchronized distributed dialogues, which is needed in emerging application areas, such as mobile and ubiquitous computing. The architecture supports coordinated distribution of dialogues, concurrent dialogues, system level adaptation and shared system context. The overall idea is to use interaction agents to distribute dialogues, use an evaluation mechanism to make them dynamically adaptive and synchronize them by using a coordination mechanism with triggers and transactions. We present experiences from several applications written on top of the freely available architecture.

In this paper, we introduce the concept of integrated tutoring in speech applications. An integrated tutoring system teaches the use of a system to a user while he/she is using the system in a typical manner. Furthermore, we introduce the general principles of how to implement applications with integrated tutoring agents and present an example implementation for an existing e-mail system. The main innovation of the approach is that the tutoring agents are part of the application, but implemented in a way which makes it possible to plug them into the system without modifying it. This is possible due to a set of small, stateless agents and a shared Information Storage provided by our system architecture. Integrated tutoring agents are easily expandable and configurable, and general agents can be shared between applications. We have also received positive feedback about integrated tutoring in initial user tests conducted with the implementation.

Event-based programming has been studied little, yet recent work suggests that language paradigm can predict programming strategies and performance. A contextual inquiry of four expert programmers using the Alice 3D programming environment was performed in order to discover how event-based programming strategies might be supported in programming environments. Various programming, testing, and debugging breakdowns were extracted from observations and possible programming environment tools are suggested as aids to avoid these breakdowns. We present a critique of language-based modelling for text input research, and propose an alternative input-based approach. Current language-based statistical models are derived from large samples of text (corpora). However, this text reflects only the output, or final result, of the text input task. We argue that this weakens the utility of the model, because, (1) users' language is typically quite different from that in any corpus;punctuation symbols, acronyms, slang, etc. are frequently used. (2) A corpus does not reflect the editing process used in its creation. (3) No existing corpus captures the input modalities of text input devices. Actions associated with keys such as Shift, Alt, and Ctrl are missing. We present a study to validate our arguments. Keystroke data from four subjects were collected over a one-month period. Results are presented that support the need for input-based language modelling for text input.

I propose that graphics that accompany procedural instructions divide into two categories, namely outcome graphics and process graphics. By using think-aloud protocol, I ask the following questions: 1. Can readers tell the difference between graphical types? 2. Do readers prefer one graphical type over another if they are given a choice? With this study I was able to collect information about what readers want and do not want when they read instructions (n=25). From think-aloud data, 72% of subjects indicated they recognized a difference between outcome graphics and process graphics. Eighty percent of subjects preferred process graphics to outcome graphics. With the study I could also examine subjects' vocalized reasons for their graphical preferences, as well as reading behaviors and vocalized meta-reading information. Finally, I suggest improvements in the study's method, as well as other ways to continue research that involves outcome graphics and process graphics.
