Since 1977, we have followed a total of 12 prelinguistic, profoundly deaf children who used different amounts of tactile stimulation at various stages of language acquisition. Subjects ranged in age from 6 weeks to 5 years old at the onset of tactile aid usage. Longitudinal data measuring speech perception, speech production, and general linguistic behavior suggest that our nine successful tactile aid users followed a sequence of language acquisition similar to that outlined for normal hearing children [A. Peters, The Units of Language Acquisition (Cambridge U. P., Cambridge, England, 1983)] and that Peters' work provides a theoretical basis for incorporating tactile aids into language training programs for young deaf children. Language learning difficulties and socioenvironmental factors, not device design and construction, account for why three subjects did not become frequent tactile aid users. The cumulative effect of our data for all subjects suggests that there is a need for a gradation of devices providing increasingly complex tactile stimulation as the child matures linguistically and physically. Videotapes will be used to illustrate tactile aid usage. [Work supported by The Deafness Research Foundation and grant no. RR07143, department of Health and human Services.]

A course on pervasive computing should be structured around key functions throughout a systems development process to cover common underlying concerns throughout science and engineering disciplines - development of design rationale, prototyping, evaluation, and component reuse. However, broader considerations of usage context and appreciation for research and methodological contributions from other disciplines must be strongly factored into course planning. To achieve both goals, we suggest learning objectives, a general strategy and approach using case-based learning.

Reacting to challenges that have been observed in human-computerinteraction (HCI) education, as well as the multidisciplinary design, science, and engineering underpinnings, we investigate a pedagogical approach based on case methods. Our study of various case method techniques in an undergraduate HCI class provides insights into challenges that can be expected in the employment of case methods, student learning outcomes, and considerations for HCI curriculum planning. In general, case methods show great promise with a wide variety of topics, and we present broad recommendations for future work that will improve integration of HCI professional practice, research, and education.

This paper proposes a fast and robust framework for incrementally detecting text on road signs from natural scene video. The new framework makes two main contributions. First, the framework applies a Divide-and-Conquer strategy to decompose the original task into two sub-tasks, that is, localization of road signs and detection of text. The algorithms for the two sub-tasks are smoothly incorporated into a unified framework through a real time tracking algorithm. Second, the framework provides a novel way for text detection from video by integrating 2D features in each video frame (e.g., color, edges, texture) with 3D information available in a video sequence (e.g., object structure). The feasibility of the proposed framework has been evaluated on the video sequences captured from a moving vehicle. The new framework can be applied to a driving assistant system and other tasks of text detection from video.

In spoken dialogue applications dialogue management has conventionally been realized with a single monolithic dialogue manager implementing a comprehensive dialogue control model. We present a highly distributed system structure that enables the integration of different dialogue control approaches to handle spoken dialogues. With this structure it is possible to integrate multiple dialogue control models into a single working application in a flexible fashion. The main principle is that all the processing is distributed into many compact agents that focus on single tasks. The agents process the information independently and share all the information via shared information storage. We present the principles that enable such distribution. In addition, a multilingual example application, AthosMail, is presented.

Evaluating distributed CSCW applications is a difficult endeavor. Frameworks and methodologies for structuring this type of evaluation have become a central concern for CSCW researchers. In this paper we describe the problems involved in evaluating remote collaborations, and we review some of the more prominent conceptual frameworks of group interaction that have driven CSCW evaluation in the past. A multifaceted evaluation framework is presented that approaches the problem from the relationships underlying joint awareness, communication, collaboration, coordination, and work coupling. Finally, recommendations for carrying out multifaceted evaluations of remote interaction are provided. Copyright 2004 ACM.
