AN EFFICIENT EIGEN VALUES BASED TECHNIQUE FOR ONLINE IRIS IMAGE COMPRESSION AND IDENTIFICATION

This paper introduces an efficient Eigen values based technique for online iris image compression and identification of a human including the case of identical twins. The iris image is extracted after removing the pupil, eye brow, skin and other noise disturbances from an actual image. The extracted iris image is divided into different blocks of size of 16 × 16. Now, Eigen values are calculated for each block and these Eigen values are stored in the smart card memory for further identification. Therefore, when checking if two iris images are identical or not, all we need is to compare the stored Eigen values with online calculated Eigen values. If two iris images have the same Eigen values, this means that both iris images belong to the same person. In our research, we have concluded that iris images of different persons have different Eigen values, including the case of identical twins. We conducted experiments on CASIA and Multimedia University iris image databases and we found that our Eigen Values Based Iris Image Identification Technique is giving 99.99% accuracy for the same image of identical twins and individuals. The implementation leads us to believe that our method is giving the best matching result in the case of identical twins and individuals. It is an efficient, secure and economically feasible approach for online personal identification.

In this paper, a valid frequency range of throat signal analyses is presented. Compare to speech signals, the throat signals have many differences in the amount of information. In this context, targeting on throat signals to find valid frequency range is one of the most important analyses for the development of new breed of feature extraction algorithm. In this respect, using analysis similarity of throat signals feature distribution and correlation analysis of throat signals in the frequency domain, the frequency range can be found with effective and quick response time to be applied to a voice command recognition system using neck-microphone. As a result, the proposed frequency range is from 200Hz(center frequency) to 2001Hz(center frequency). For the neck-microphone voice command system using the proposed frequency range, a significant reduction in time complexity of 25% can be achieved without any loss in recognition rate. © 2011 IEEE.

Communities in social networks emerge from interactions among individuals and can be analyzed through a combination of clustering and graph layout algorithms. These approaches result in 2D or 3D visualizations of clustered graphs, with groups of vertices representing individuals that form a community. However, in many instances the vertices have attributes that divide individuals into distinct categories such as gender, profession, geographic location, and similar. It is often important to investigate what categories of individuals comprise each community and vice-versa, how the community structures associate the individuals from the same category. Currently, there are no effective methods for analyzing both the community structure and the category-based partitions of social graphs. We propose Group-In-a-Box (GIB), a metalayout for clustered graphs that enables multi-faceted analysis of networks. It uses the treemap space filling technique to display each graph cluster or category group within its own box, sized according to the number of vertices therein. GIB optimizes visualization of the network sub-graphs, providing a semantic substrate for category-based and cluster-based partitions of social graphs. We illustrate the application of GIB to multi-faceted analysis of real social networks and discuss desirable properties of GIB using synthetic datasets. © 2011 IEEE.

This research compares several of the thematic roles of Verb Net (VN) to those of the Linguistic Infrastructure for Interoperable Resources and Systems (LIRICS). The purpose of this comparison is to develop a standard set of thematic roles that would be suited to a variety of natural language processing (NLP) applications. We draw from both resources to construct a unified set of semantic roles that will replace existing VN semantic roles. Through the process of comparison, we find that a hierarchical organization of coarse-grained, intermediate and fine-grained roles facilitates mapping between semantic resources of differing granularity and allows for flexibility in how VN can be used for diverse NLP applications, thus, we propose a hierarchical taxonomy of the unified role set. The comparison and subsequent development of the hierarchy reveals a level of granularity shared by both resources, which could be further developed into a standard set of thematic roles for the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).

In this paper, we discuss an approach for enabling students with a visual impairment (VI) to validate the program sequence of a robotic system operating in the real world. We introduce a method that enables the person with VI to feel their robot’s movement as well as the environment in which the robot is traveling. The design includes a human-robot interaction framework that utilizes multi-modal feedback to transfer the environmental perception to a human user with VI. Haptic feedback and auditory feedback are selected as primary methods for user interaction. Using this multi-modal sensory feedback approach, participants are taught to program their own robot to accomplish varying navigation tasks. We discuss and analyze the implementation of the method as deployed during two summer camps for middle-school students with visual impairment.

During recent years there has been a growing interest in Brain computer Interface (BCI) systems as an alternative means of interaction with the external world for people with severe motor disabilities. The use of the P300 event-related potentials as control feature allows users to choose between various options (letters or icons) requiring a very short calibration phase. The aim of this work is to improve performances and flexibility of P300 based BCIs. An efficient BCI system should be able to understand user's intentions from the ongoing EEG, abstaining from doing a selection when the user is engaged in a different activity, and changing its speed of selection depending on current user's attention level. Our self-paced system addresses all these issues representing an important step beyond the classical synchronous P300 BCI that forces the user in a continuous control task. Experimentation has been performed on 10 healthy volunteers acting on a BCI-controlled domestic environment in order to demonstrate the potential usability of BCI systems in everyday life. Results show that the self-paced BCI increases information transfer rate with respect to the synchronous one, being very robust, at the same time, in avoiding false negatives when the user is not engaged in a control task.

This paper presents the results of interviews with representatives of the three key groups of stakeholders in the value chain for web accessibility: website commissioners, web developers and web accessibility experts. 26 web commissioners, 7 web developers and 14 web accessibility experts were interviewed. The results show that in spite of great efforts by the World Wide Web Consortium, the European Commission and other international and national organizations to promote web accessibility, knowledge of this topic is still low. More critically, the tools to support commissioners, developers and accessibility experts are still very poor and do not provide much of the functionality that the various groups in the value chain need. We believe these results highlight some of the reasons why the state of web accessibility is still as poor as it is.

In many practical situations, we have a sample of objects of a given type. When we measure the values of a certain quantity for these objects, we get a sequence of values x1, ..., xn. When the sample is large enough, then the arithmetic mean E of the values xi is a good approximation for the average value of this quantity for all the objects from this class. The values xi come from measurements, and measurements are never absolutely accurate. Often, the only information that we have about the measurement error is the upper bound Δi on this error. In this case, once we have the measurement result xi, the condition that |xi - xi| ≤ Δi implies that the actual (unknown) value xi belongs to the interval [xi - Δi, xi + Δi]. In addition, we often know the upper bound V0 on the variance V of the actual values - e.g., we know that the objects belong to the same species, and we know that within-species differences cannot be too high. In such cases, to estimate the average over the class, we need to find the range of possible values of the mean under the constraints that each xi belongs to the given interval [xi xi] and that the variance V(x1, ..., x n) is bounded by a given value V0. In this paper, we provide efficient algorithms for computing this range. © 2011 IEEE.

Visualizations of static networks in the form of node-link diagrams have evolved rapidly, though researchers are still grappling with how best to show evolution of nodes over time in these diagrams. This paper introduces NetVisia, a social network visualization system designed to support users in exploring temporal evolution in networks by using heat maps to display node attribute changes over time. NetVisia's novel contributions to network visualizations are to (1) cluster nodes in the heat map by similar metric values instead of by topological similarity, and (2) align nodes in the heat map by events. We compare NetVisia to existing systems and describe a formative user evaluation of a NetVisia prototype with four participants that emphasized the need for tool tips and coordinated views. Despite the presence of some usability issues, in 30-40 minutes the user evaluation participants discovered new insights about the data set which had not been discovered using other systems. We discuss implemented improvements to NetVisia, and analyze a co-occurrence network of 228 business intelligence concepts and entities. This analysis confirms the utility of a clustered heat map to discover outlier nodes and time periods.
