In this panel, we explore the role emerging transitive materials, like flexible thin-film displays, multi-touch input skins, e-textiles, micro-actuators and Claytronics might play in re-defining the human interface towards a programmable form of reality. Panelist will extrapolate historical trends from Tangibles to new developments in organic user interfaces, trying to identify a future in which interfaces will no longer be predominantly flat, but instead have any possible shape or form: from skins that are foldable, flexible and physical to three-dimensional products that are fully kinetic.

Currently the 2 percent growth rate for the world's older population exceeds the 1.2 rate for the world's population as a whole. By 2050, the number of individuals over the age 85 is projected to be three times more than there is today. Most of these individuals will need physical, emotional, and cognitive assistance. In this paper, we present a new adaptive robotic system based on the socially assistive robotics (SAR) technology that tries to provide a customized help protocol through motivation, encouragements, and companionship to users suffering from cognitive changes related to aging and/or Alzheimer's disease. Our results show that this approach can engage the patients and keep them interested in interacting with the robot, which, in turn, increases their positive behavior.

The International Children's Digital Library (ICDL), is a website of exemplary and freely available children's books with a child-friendly interface for finding and reading books online. The design, implementation, and deployment of the ICDL is done thorough a process called Cooperative Inquiry, which offers search parameters of various books. An IDCL weblog analysis confirms the academic research with practice, and allows children to read books in order or starting at any page by clicking on it. The website has received a positive feedback from users and has also been offered request from the World Bank and the Government of Mongolia to create a Mongolian version of the ICDL. The user countries of ICDL are aimed to identify economic impact of this technology and are aimed to use this website technology of online books in a variety of domains.

Mobile imaging and digital storytelling currently support a growing practice of multimedia communication in the West. In this paper we describe a project which explores their benefit in the East, to support non-textual information sharing in an Indian village. Local audiovisual story creation and sharing activities were carried out in a one month trial, using 10 customized cameraphones and a digital library of stories represented on a village display. The findings show that the system was usable by a cross- section of the community and valued for its ability to express a mixture of development and community information in an accessible form. Lessons for the role of HC1 in this context are also discussed. Copyright 2009 ACM.

This paper proposes a new background segmentation method based on Phong reflection model for video surveillance system. The main goal of this method is to reduce the affections of the non-uniform illumination and specular reflection. The steps of this method include: First, the colour invariance of diffuse reflection was deduced and the diffuse component of the model was estimated;second, the specular factors and specular exponent of the specular component was calculated by following differential rules;third, based on the established model, the background segment is accomplished. The experimental results and the evaluation show that this method can not only be robust to the non-uniform lighting and the specular reflection of background surface, but also be applicable for real-time video surveillance system.

This paper presents Cognitor, a common-sense aided framework for the cog-learn pattern language that aims to help content editors create and contextualize e-learning content through the generation of hyper documents that comprise pedagogical issues, producing learning objects (LO) compatible with the SCORM standard. Cog-Learn have been developed from learning and human-computerinteraction (HCI) theories. The goal of Cognitor is to allow for the design of digital learning material with better organization of the content that will be explored by learners, aiming to make easier the interaction with it, addressing HCI issues, as well as the interaction between learners and teachers, addressing human-humaninteraction (HHI) issues. To reach that, it is important that the LO created in Cognitor be easy to reuse, helping creators to fill out the metadata aiming at addressing cultural issues related to the context in which the LO can be adopted and reused. For that, suggestions coming from a common sense knowledge base automatically appear in some SCORM metadata fields in order to help the task of filling out culturally contextualized metadata.

The field of relational reinforcement learning has reached its first decennium. The use of objects and relations as primary representations of states and actions introduces many new challenges and opportunities to scale the reinforcement learning paradigm to larger and more structured domains. In this paper we highlight some of the main dimensions, discuss important solution principles of both the model-based and the model-free setting, and furthermore, we briefly discuss some issues concerning domain sizes and upgrading existing propositional algorithms.

Articulation training with many kinds of stimulus and messages such as visual, voice, and articulatory information can teach user to pronounce correctly and improve user's articulatory ability. In this paper, an articulation training system with intelligent interface and multimode feedbacks is proposed to improve the performance of articulation training. Clinical knowledge of speech evaluation is used to design the dependent network. Then, automatic speech recognition with dependent network is applied to identify the pronunciation errors. Besides, hierarchical Bayesian network is proposed to recognize user's emotion from speeches. With the information of pronunciation errors and user's emotional state, the articulation training sentences can be dynamically selected. Finally, a 3D facial animation is provided to teach users to pronounce a sentence by using speech, lip motion, and tongue motion. Experimental results reveal the usefulness of proposed method and system.

We examine how people's different uses of the Internet predict their later scores on a standard measure of depression, and how their existing social resources moderate these effects. In a longitudinal US survey conducted in 2001 and 2002, almost all respondents reported using the Internet for information, and entertainment and escape;these uses of the Internet had no impact on changes in respondents' level of depression. Almost all respondents also used the Internet for communicating with friends and family, and they showed lower depression scores six months later. Only about 20 percent of this sample reported using the Internet to meet new people and talk in online groups. Doing so changed their depression scores depending on their initial levels of social support. Those having high or medium levels of social support showed higher depression scores;those with low levels of social support did not experience these increases in depression. Our results suggest that individual differences in social resources and people's choices of how they use the Internet may account for the different outcomes reported in the literature.

Database searches are usually performed with query languages and form fill in templates, with results displayed in tabular lists. However, excitement is building around dynamic queries sliders and other graphical selectors for query specification, with results displayed by information visualization techniques. These filtering techniques have proven to be effective for many tasks in which visual presentations enable discovery of relationships, clusters, outliers, gaps, and other patterns. Scaling visual presentations from millions to billions of records will require collaborative research efforts in information visualization and database management to enable rapid aggregation, meaningful coordinated windows, and effective summary graphics. This paper describes current and proposed solutions (atomic, aggregated, and density plots) that facilitate sense-making for interactive visual exploration of billion record data sets.
