This paper presents Cognitor, a common-sense aided framework for the cog-learn pattern language that aims to help content editors create and contextualize e-learning content through the generation of hyper documents that comprise pedagogical issues, producing learning objects (LO) compatible with the SCORM standard. Cog-Learn have been developed from learning and human-computerinteraction (HCI) theories. The goal of Cognitor is to allow for the design of digital learning material with better organization of the content that will be explored by learners, aiming to make easier the interaction with it, addressing HCI issues, as well as the interaction between learners and teachers, addressing human-humaninteraction (HHI) issues. To reach that, it is important that the LO created in Cognitor be easy to reuse, helping creators to fill out the metadata aiming at addressing cultural issues related to the context in which the LO can be adopted and reused. For that, suggestions coming from a common sense knowledge base automatically appear in some SCORM metadata fields in order to help the task of filling out culturally contextualized metadata.

The field of relational reinforcement learning has reached its first decennium. The use of objects and relations as primary representations of states and actions introduces many new challenges and opportunities to scale the reinforcement learning paradigm to larger and more structured domains. In this paper we highlight some of the main dimensions, discuss important solution principles of both the model-based and the model-free setting, and furthermore, we briefly discuss some issues concerning domain sizes and upgrading existing propositional algorithms.

Articulation training with many kinds of stimulus and messages such as visual, voice, and articulatory information can teach user to pronounce correctly and improve user's articulatory ability. In this paper, an articulation training system with intelligent interface and multimode feedbacks is proposed to improve the performance of articulation training. Clinical knowledge of speech evaluation is used to design the dependent network. Then, automatic speech recognition with dependent network is applied to identify the pronunciation errors. Besides, hierarchical Bayesian network is proposed to recognize user's emotion from speeches. With the information of pronunciation errors and user's emotional state, the articulation training sentences can be dynamically selected. Finally, a 3D facial animation is provided to teach users to pronounce a sentence by using speech, lip motion, and tongue motion. Experimental results reveal the usefulness of proposed method and system.

We examine how people's different uses of the Internet predict their later scores on a standard measure of depression, and how their existing social resources moderate these effects. In a longitudinal US survey conducted in 2001 and 2002, almost all respondents reported using the Internet for information, and entertainment and escape;these uses of the Internet had no impact on changes in respondents' level of depression. Almost all respondents also used the Internet for communicating with friends and family, and they showed lower depression scores six months later. Only about 20 percent of this sample reported using the Internet to meet new people and talk in online groups. Doing so changed their depression scores depending on their initial levels of social support. Those having high or medium levels of social support showed higher depression scores;those with low levels of social support did not experience these increases in depression. Our results suggest that individual differences in social resources and people's choices of how they use the Internet may account for the different outcomes reported in the literature.

Database searches are usually performed with query languages and form fill in templates, with results displayed in tabular lists. However, excitement is building around dynamic queries sliders and other graphical selectors for query specification, with results displayed by information visualization techniques. These filtering techniques have proven to be effective for many tasks in which visual presentations enable discovery of relationships, clusters, outliers, gaps, and other patterns. Scaling visual presentations from millions to billions of records will require collaborative research efforts in information visualization and database management to enable rapid aggregation, meaningful coordinated windows, and effective summary graphics. This paper describes current and proposed solutions (atomic, aggregated, and density plots) that facilitate sense-making for interactive visual exploration of billion record data sets. During exploratory data analysis, visualizations are often useful for making sense of complex data sets. However, as data sets increase in size and complexity, static information visualizations decrease in comprehensibility. Interactive techniques can yield valuable discoveries, but current data analysis tools typically support only opportunistic exploration that may be inefficient and incomplete. We present a refined architecture that uses systematic yet flexible (SYF) design goals to guide domain expert users through complex exploration of data over days, weeks and months. The SYF system aims to support exploratory data analysis with some of the simplicity of an e-commerce check-out while providing added flexibility to pursue insights. The SYF system provides an overview of the analysis process, suggests unexplored states, allows users to annotate useful states, supports collaboration, and enables reuse of successful strategies. The affordances of the SYF system are demonstrated by integrating it into a social network analysis tool employed by social scientists and intelligence analysts. The SYF system is a tool-independent component and can be incorporated into other data analysis tools. Copyright 2008 ACM.

Storyboards, a grid layout of thumbnail images as surrogates representing video, have received much attention in video retrieval interfaces and published studies through the years, and work quite well as navigation aids and as facilitators for shotbased information retrieval. When the information need is tied less to shots and requires inspection of stories and across stories, other interfaces into the video data have been demonstrated to be quite useful. These interfaces include scatterplots for timelines, choropleth maps, dynamic query preview histograms, and named entity relation diagrams representing sets of hundreds or thousands of video stories. One challenge for interactive video search is to move beyond support for fact-finding and also address broader, longer term search activities of learning, analysis, synthesis, and discovery. Examples are shown for broadcast news and life oral histories, drawing from empirically collected data showing how such interfaces can promote improved exploratory search. This paper surveys and reflects on a body of Informedia interface work dealing with news, folding in for the first time an examination of exploratory transactions with an oral history corpus.
