The ubiquitous within-document text search feature (Ctrl-F) is considered by users to be a key advantage in electronic information seeking [1]. However what people say they do and what they actually do are not always consistent. It is necessary to understand, acknowledge and identify the cause of this inconsistency. We must identify the physical and cognitive factors to develop better methods and tools, assisting with the search process. This paper discusses the limitations and myths of Ctrl-f in information seeking. A prototype system for within-document search is introduced. Three user studies portray shared behaviour and attitudes, common between participants regarding within-document searching. Copyright 2008 ACM.

This research is part of the ongoing multinational collaboration ldquoAsian English speech corpus projectrdquo (AESOP), whose aim is to build up an Asian English speech corpus representing the varieties of English spoken in Asia. AESOP is an international consortium of linguists, speech scientists, psychologists and educators from Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, China, Thailand, Indonesia and Mongolia. Its primary aim is to collect and compare Asian English speech corpora from the countries listed above in order to derive a set of core properties common to all varieties of Asian English, as well as to discover features that are particular to individual varieties. Each research team will use a common recording setup and share an experimental task set, and will develop a common, open-ended annotation system. Moreover, AESOP-collected corpora will be an open resource, available to the research community at large. The initial stage of the phonetics aspect of this project will be devoted to designing spoken-language tasks which will elicit production of a large range of English segmental and suprasegmental characteristics. These data will be used to generate a catalogue of acoustic characteristics particular to individual varieties of Asian English, which will then be compared with the data collected by other AESOP members in order to determine areas of overlap between L1 and L2 English as well as differences among varieties of Asian English.

It has been reported in previous work that students' online tutoring data collected from intelligent tutoring systems can be used to build models to predict actual state test scores. In this paper, we replicated a previous study to model students' math proficiency by taking into consideration students' response data during the tutoring session and their help-seeking behavior. To extend our previous work, we propose a new method of using students test scores from multiple years (referred to as cross-year data) for determining whether a student model is as good as the standardized test to which it is compared at estimating student math proficiency. We show that our model can do as well as a standardized test. We show that what we assess has prediction ability two years later. We stress that the contribution of the paper is the methodology of using student cross-year state test score to evaluate a student model against a standardized test.

In a previous study ([4]), we used the ASSISTment system to track student knowledge longitudinally over the course of a schools year, based upon each student using our system about a dozen times during the course of the year. This result confounded learning from the computer system with students learning from their sitting their normal class. In this work, we look to see if students were reliably learning from their time spent with the computer in a single day. Our result suggests that students performed better later in the same computer session on similar skills, which indicates students are learning from using ASSISTments. However, learning is rather uneven across groups of skills. We test a variety of hypotheses to explain this phenomenon and found that the automated approaches we tried were unable to account for the variation. However, human expert judgments were predictive as to which groups of skills were learnable.

This paper describes a new methodology for gait training and recovery for people in mid- and late-stage dementia. A combination of social and rhythmic auditory cues is used to express the robot's behavior. Specifically, the described research develops and evaluates a method for on-line adaptation aimed at both personalizing the therapy process and maximizing its health-related outcomes. This novel user activity sensing approach provides the rationale for development of socially assistive robotics therapy for monitoring and coaching users toward customized and optimized recovery and care programs.

This paper presents results from a preliminary analysis of interaction and human observation data gathered from students using an Aplusix, an intelligent tutoring system for algebra. Towards the development of automatic detectors of behavior and affect, this study tried to determine whether it was possible to identify distinct groups of students based on interaction logs alone. Using unsupervised clustering, we were able to identify that student behaviors within the software cluster into two categories, Clusters 0 and 1, associated with differing higher-level behaviors and affective states. Cluster 0 tended to reflect more collaborative work, whereas Cluster 1 reflected more solitary work. Cluster 1 students tended to exhibit more flow, suggesting that students in flow tend to work in a more individual fashion. An examination of the keystrokes used by each group showed that Cluster 0 used the arrow keys and cursor keys significantly more than Cluster 1. The Cluster 1, on the other hand, tended to type more mathematical operators or use the duplicate command more frequently than Cluster 0. This implies that frequent use of mathematical operators and frequent duplication of the problem may be evidence of flow within Aplusix.
