A motivationally-aware version of the Ecolab system was developed with the aim of improving the learners' motivation. To gain some insight into the effects of motivational modeling on students' affective states, we observed the affect of 180 students interacting with either Ecolab or M-Ecolab. The affective states considered were based on existing coding schemes [10]. The results suggest that the motivationally-aware tutoring system seems to maintain students' delight over time. However, it seems the motivational interventions did not create new "virtuous cycles" of positive affect [10], or disrupt "vicious cycles", where a student persists in a negative affective state.

This paper presents an emotional exchange framework for a socially interactive robot. The purpose of emotional exchange in social interaction between a robot and people is to make people feel that the robot is a believable living assistant, not a mere machine for information translation. Our emotional exchange framework is composed of the emotion recognition, generation, and expression systems. A user's emotion is recognized by multi-modality such as voice, dialogue, and touch. The robot's emotion is generated according to a psychological theory about cognitive emotions caused by the social interaction within people. Furthermore, the emotion intensity is regulated by the loyalty level of a robot to various users. The generated emotion is dynamically expressed by facial expression, gesture, and the musical sound of the robot. The proposed system, which is composed of all the three components that are necessary for a full emotional interaction cycle, is implemented in the real robot system and tested. The proposed framework can be a cornerstone for the design of emotion interaction and generation systems for robots.

Designing semantic substrates for visual network exploration

A semantic substrate is a spatial template for a network, where nodes are grouped into regions and laid out within each region according to one or more node attributes. This paper shows how users can be given control in designing their own substrates and how this ability leads to a different approach to network data exploration. Users can create a semantic substrate, enter their data, get feedback from domain experts, edit the semantic substrate, and iteratively continue this procedure until the domain experts are satisfied with the insights they have gained. We illustrate this process in two case studies with domain experts working with legal precedents and food webs. Guidelines for designing substrates are provided, including how to locate, size, and align regions in a substrate, which attributes to choose for grouping nodes into regions, how to select placement methods and which attributes to set as parameters of the selected placement method. Throughout the paper, examples are illustrated with NVSS 2.0, the network visualization tool developed to explore the semantic substrate idea. © 2007 Palgrave Macmillan Ltd. All rights reserved.

ThumbSpace: Generalized one-handed input for touchscreen-based mobile devices

In this paper, we present ThumbSpace, a software-based interaction technique that provides general one-handed thumb operation of touchscreenbased mobile devices. Our goal is to provide accurate selection of all interface objects, especially small and far targets, which are traditionally difficult to interact with using the thumb. We present the ThumbSpace design and a comparative evaluation against direct interaction for target selection. Our results show that ThumbSpace was well-received, improved accuracy for selecting targets that are out of thumb reach, and made users as effective at selecting small targets as large targets. The results further suggest user practice and design iterations hold potential to close the gap in access time between the two input methods, where ThumbSpace did not do as well as direct interaction. © IFIP International Federation for Information Processing 2007.

Peripheral participation is fundamental to collaborative learning. In the classroom, we see two situations in which peripheral participation is essential: formative assessment, during which a teacher attempts to assess the utility of an ongoing activity and intervenes if necessary;and peer-monitoring, during which a student attempts to learn what other students are doing. When augmenting the classroom with handheld, wireless computing devices, handling peripheral participation becomes more difficult. The proposed new handheld network service, Look, allows a late overhearer, who has not witnessed the creation of common ground, to monitor the interaction between group members already engaged in a collaborative situated learning without interrupting. laboratory experiences with our prototypes indicate that Look balances lightweight implementation, ease of use, and utility in a way that could enhance classroom communication and learning.

Social interaction and collaboration are essential to the emotional and cognitive development of young children [40]. Constructionism [32] is a learning theory where children learn as they build or construct a public artifact. Creative activities that promote collaboration, especially those based on principles of constructionism, provide enhanced learning opportunities for young children. Mobile devices can support the learning experience as children can create artifacts in various contexts. The proposed research incorporates collaboration, constructionism, children, stories and mobile technologies;specifically investigating developmentally appropriate interfaces to support mobile collaboration for young children. OSI then helps people perform Evidence Traceability (ET), which allows them to understand the questions about the different sources used in documents such as how many unique sources were used, where the sources came from, when the sources were obtained, and how the sources were obtained. Answering these questions allows people to better question the validity of documents, reevaluate hypotheses, or continue work or research when original authors are not available.

Based on many experiences of developing interactive systems by the authors, a framework for the description and analysis of interaction has been developed. The dimensions of this multimodal interaction space have been identified as sensory modalities, modes and levels of interaction. To illustrate and validate this framework, development of multimodal interaction styles is carried out and interactions in the real world are studied, going from theory to practice and back again. The paper describes the framework and two recent projects, one in the field of interactive architecture and another in the field of multimodal HCI research. Both projects use multiple modalities for interaction, particularly movement based interaction styles. © Springer-Verlag London Limited 2007.

In this panel, we propose to figure out how requirements engineering and interaction design can be usefully combined. In particular, some people argue that scenarios/ use cases should be concrete, as in story-telling. Others argue for use of "essential" use cases as a methodological approach to interaction and user-interface design. Somewhat in the middle, it is argued that use cases should help acquiring the requirements in the first place. What should the practitioner believe and, in particular, do, in order to develop useful and usable software and systems? Software development and interaction design require different skills and different methods and are typically done by different people. Still, scenario-based design is proposed for several activities relevant for both tasks, such as requirements elicitation, software design, and interaction design. Symbolic modeling in this spirit is actually common to various fields. However, scenario-based approaches vary, especially with regard to their use, e.g., employing abstract use cases or integrating scenarios with functions and goals in a systematic design process. So, the key issue to be raised at the panel is how to combine different approaches, e.g., in scenario-based development, so that the interaction design as well as the development of the user interface and of the software internally result in an overall useful and useable system.
