Enriching courses on human-computerinteraction with socially-relevant projects provides a compelling opportunity for students to improve their education and make socially beneficial contributions. By having clearly defined user communities outside the classroom, students have the chance to practice their interview, observation, and usability testing skills, while developing projects that continue beyond the semester. These projects often give students life-changing exposure to genuine needs and impressive results to include in their portfolio when seeking employment. Educators will present their strategies for arranging, supervising, and grading these projects. Students will describe their experience and how it influenced them.

computer supported collaborative learning activities involve combination of complex software tools that often need to interoperate in a wider context of learning. This paper proposes a data model that accommodates requirements of typical collaborative learning situations and facilitates interoperability of tools and interchange of products of collaboration and evaluation data. The model has been tested against various typical tools used for both synchronous and asynchronous collaboration of groups of students
computer-aided surgical simulation is a topic of increasingly extensive research. computer graphics, geometric modeling and finite-element analysis all play major roles in these simulations. Furthermore, real-time res...

Designing collaborative interfaces for tabletops remains difficult because we do not fully understand how groups coordinate their actions when working collaboratively over tables. We present two observational studies of pairs completing independent and shared tasks that investigate collaborative coupling, or the manner in which collaborators are involved and occupied with each other's work. Our results indicate that individuals frequently and fluidly engage and disengage with group activity through several distinct, recognizable states with unique characteristics. We describe these states and explore the consequences of these states for tabletop interface design. Copyright 2006 ACM.

Making learning part of life is an essential challenge for inventing the future of our societies. Lifelong learning is a necessity rather than a possibility or a luxury to be considered. Self-directed learning (often occurring as learning on demand in response to breakdowns) is the dominant form of lifelong learning. The power of the unaided individual mind is highly overrated. Although society often thinks of creative individuals as working in isolation, learning and creativity result in large part from the interaction and collaboration with other individuals. Much human creativity is social, and learning communities are needed to cope with the challenges of making learning part of life. This paper articulates existing problems in our current and future world requiring lifelong and self-directed learning and learning communities. It defines conceptual frameworks and it describes four innovative computational environments: (1) domain-oriented design environments, (2) critiquing systems, (3) the Envisionment and Discovery Collaboratory, and (4) Caretta. The paper concludes by providing a set of challenges for the future use of technology to enhance learning based on the conceptual frameworks and the experience and assessment of our system development efforts.

Stereo and bi-ocular head-mounted displays (HMDs) require the user to fuse two images into a coherent picture of the threedimensional world. The human visual system performs this task constantly, but when the input images contain both real and graphical depictions, the problem becomes more difficult. A vertical disparity in the graphics causes diplopia for users trying to fuse the real and virtual objects simultaneously. We implement three methods to measure and correct this disparity and assess them with a collection of a single model of optical see-through HMD.

This paper provides a new region-based high-way multi-vehicle surveillance system scheme. The contribution of this system includes a modified adaptive Gaussian background model, a non-recursive region-growth algorithm for multi-vehicle recognition, and a color-based predictive rule for multi-vehicle tracking. Since the high-way images are usually strongly disturbed, a modified region-based Gaussian background model is presented in order to remove much heavy noises and small disturbing regions. To build this model, we first used several background imaging samples to get the disturbed regions by background subtraction technique, and then computed the statistic values of the size of disturbed regions as the parameters of this region-based Gaussian background model. In order to reduce the effect of daylight and be updated adaptively, we also applied a weighted iterative algorithm based on Kalman filter theory. A modified non-recursive region-growth algorithm is presented for multi-vehicle recognition whose computational complexity can be only O(n), and a color-based predictive rule is also proposed for multi-vehicle tracking which is very easy to implement. At last, the experimental results show that this system can achieve multi-vehicle recognition and tracking robustly and adaptively.

iSonic is an interactive sonification tool for vision impaired users to explore geo-referenced statistical data, such as population or crime rates by geographical regions. Users use a keyboard or a smooth surface touchpad to interact with coordinated map and table views of the data. The integrated use of musical sounds and speech allows users to grasp the overall data trends and to explore the data to get more details. Scenarios of use are described.
