BACKGROUND:In about one in 10,000 cases, a published article is retracted. This very often means that the results it reports are flawed. Several authors have voiced concerns about the presence of retracted research in the memory of science. In particular, a retracted result is propagated by citing it. In the published literature, many instances are given of retracted articles that are cited both before and after their retraction. Even worse is the possibility that these articles in turn are cited in such a way that the retracted result is propagated further.
METHODS:We have conducted a case study to find out how a retracted article is cited and whether retracted results are propagated through indirect citations. We have constructed the entire citation network for this case.
RESULTS:We show that directly citing articles is an important source of propagation of retracted research results. In contrast, in our case study, indirect citations do not contribute to the propagation of the retracted result.
CONCLUSIONS:While admitting the limitations of a study involving a single case, we think there are reasons for the non-contribution of indirect citations that hold beyond our case study.
We believe that children as young as ten can directly benefit from opportunities to engage in computational thinking. One approach to provide these opportunities is to focus on social game play. Understanding game pla...

We are increasingly in situations of divided attention, subject to interruptions, and having to deal with an abundance of information. Our cognitive load changes in these situations of divided attention, task interruption or multitasking; this is particularly true for older adults. To help mediate our finite attention resources in performing cognitive tasks, we have to be able to measure the real-time changes in the cognitive load of individuals. This paper investigates how to assess real-time cognitive load based on psycho-physiological measurements. We use two different cognitive tasks that test perceptual speed and visio-spatial cognitive processing capabilities, and build accurate models that differentiate an individual's cognitive load (low and high) for both young and older adults. Our models perform well in assessing load every second with two different time windows: 10 seconds and 60 seconds, although less accurately for older participants. Our results show that it is possible to build a real-time assessment method for cognitive load. Based on these results, we discuss how to integrate such models into deployable systems that mediate attention effectively.

The article discusses how LaserOrigami allows users to quickly create 3D structures that do not require manual assembly. LaserOrigami bends the workpiece by distributing the heat over a larger surface. By moving the workpiece away from the laser, it defocuses the laser. This distributes the laser's heat over a larger region. In addition, LaserOrigami further distributes the laser's heat by repeatedly running the laser back and forth over the region to be bent. LaserOrigami modifies focus by moving the cutting table up and down. LaserOrigami offers two types of interfaces. The first one is a traditional CAD-style interface, which researchers created as a master shape library for Microsoft Visio. The key idea behind LaserOrigami is that it achieves three-dimensionality by bending the workpiece. LaserOrigami accomplishes this by heating selected regions of the workpiece until they turn compliant and bend under the forces of gravity.

HCI research and practice have moved into the kitchen, and alongside screen-based technologies, a number of tangible interaction designs are emerging to support home cooking. However, we note that the designs of tangible technologies for kitchens have, to date, emphasized the work of cooking rather than the social significance or context in which it occurs. Building on this growing interest in cooking and the kitchen, we report on ethnographic research with intergenerational family members cooking together in their homes. We analyze the social, material and embodied contexts of kitchen kinesics - the non-verbal gestural communication observed in family cooking interactions. Based upon these social, embodied, and material contexts of gestural interaction in the kitchen, we identify a number of contextual concerns for approaching the design and understanding of the role of gesture in familial cooking. Ultimately we highlight the significance of collocated gestural interaction and gestured interaction over a distance to understand the opportunities and limitations afforded by the design of new technologies in the kitchen.
