In this paper, we present a simultaneous segmentation algorithm for multiple highly-occluded objects, which combines high-level knowledge and low-level information in a unified framework. The high-level knowledge provides sophisticated shape priors with the consideration of blocking relationship between nearby objects. Different from conventional layered model which attempts to solve the full ordering problem, we decompose the problem into a series of pairwise ones and this makes our algorithm scalable to a large number of objects. Objects are segmented in pixel level with higher-order soft constraints from superpixels, by a dual-level conditional random field. The model is optimized alternately by object layout and pixel-wise segmentation. We evaluate our system on different objects, i.e., clothing and pedestrian, and show impressive segmentation results and significant improvement over state-of-the-art segmentation algorithms. © 2013 Springer science+Business Media New York & science Press, China.

A physical keyboard key has three states, whereas a touch screen usually has only two. Due to this difference, the state corresponding to the touched state of a physical key is missing in a touch screen keyboard. This touched state is an important factor in the usability of a keyboard. In order to recover the role of a touched state in a touch screen, we propose the TapBoard, a touch screen software keyboard that regards tapping actions as keystrokes and other touches as the touched state. In a series of user studies, we validate the effectiveness of the TapBoard concept. First, we show that tapping to type is in fact compatible with the existing typing skill of most touch screen keyboard users. Second, users quickly adapt to the TapBoard and learn to rest their fingers in the touched state. Finally, we confirm by a controlled experiment that there is no difference in text-entry performance between the TapBoard and a traditional touch screen software keyboard. In addition to these experimental results, we demonstrate a few new interaction techniques that will be made possible by the TapBoard. Copyright © 2013 ACM.

People tend to unconsciously attribute personality traits to all kinds of technology including robots. But what personality do they want robots to have? Previous research has found support for two contradicting theories: similarity attraction and complementary attraction. The similarity attraction theory implies that people prefer a robot with a similar personality to their own (e.g., an extroverted person prefers an extroverted robot). According to the complementary attraction theory, people prefer a robot's personality opposite to their own (e.g., extroverted people prefer an introverted robot). In contrast to both theories, we argue that what is considered an appropriate personality for a robot depends on the task context. In a 2×2 between-groups experiment (N=45), we found trends that indicated similarity attraction for extrovert participants when the robot was a tour guide and complementary attraction for introverted participants when the robot was a cleaner. These trends show that preferences for robot personalities may indeed depend on the context of the robot's role and the stereotype perceptions people hold for certain jobs. Robot behaviors likely need to be adapted not in complimentary or similarity to the users' personality but to the users' expectations about what kind of personality and behaviors are consistent with such a task or role.

In the age of online social networks, instant messaging, and email, social offline interactions seem destined to become an anachronism: As our use of electronic media increases, the number of hours per day that we interact directly with others "in the flesh" declines. Yet for all the power of synchronous and asynchronous remote communication, virtual interactions are hardly an adequate substitute. Recent studies show, e.g., that users of online social networking sites feel lonelier than non-users, and that people who have regular social offline interactions on a weekly basis enjoy a significantly reduction in mortality. Is there a way to have our cake and eat it, too? Can we design technology in such a way that its use comes not at the expense of social offline interaction, but supports it? The goal of this workshop is to examine how we can build technologies that promote offline interactions. Copyright © 2013 ACM.

The present study tested the transfer effects of a short training intervention on principled-based self-explanations. The intervention used fables as well as mathematics examples and problems as "exemplifying" domains for training such self-explanations. The effects were tested in a new learning environment about attribution theory and feedback messages. In this experiment, 58 German high-school students were randomly assigned to the self-explanation training condition or a control condition (i.e., training of mnemonic strategies). The learning outcomes from the learning environment about attribution theory and feedback did not significantly differ between groups. However, those students who also reported to have applied the strategies from the training intervention actually showed the best learning outcomes. Overall, the self-explanation training intervention "convinced" just part of the learners to engage in principle-based self-explanations in a new environment. There seems to be two options to achieve more reliable effects by future training interventions: The learners have to be prompted more clearly that they should employ the learned strategies in the transfer learning environment or the short-term training intervention should be extended to have a stronger effect on spontaneous strategy application. © CogSci *** rights reserved.

The ability of any robot to robustly detect and recognize people is a fundamental issue to allow safe human-Robot interactions. This ability allows the system to deal with situations that are not determined a priori, while safely performing its tasks. Some research has been carried out on this topic, although most of the proposed approaches restrict the systems autonomy, flexibility and/or performance time. In this paper, we present a visual application for human detection and recognition without limiting the systems capabilities. © 2013 IEEE.

With the rapid growth of user-generated content on the internet, sentiment analysis of online reviews has become a hot research topic recently, but due to variety and wide range of products and services, the supervised and domain-specific models are often not practical. As the number of reviews expands, it is essential to develop an efficient sentiment analysis model that is capable of extracting product aspects and determining the sentiments for aspects. In this paper, we propose an unsupervised model for detecting aspects in reviews. In this model, first a generalized method is proposed to learn multi-word aspects. Second, a set of heuristic rules is employed to take into account the influence of an opinion word on detecting the aspect. Third a new metric based on mutual information and aspect frequency is proposed to score aspects with a new bootstrapping iterative algorithm. The presented bootstrapping algorithm works with an unsupervised seed set. Finally two pruning methods based on the relations between aspects in reviews are presented to remove incorrect aspects. The proposed model does not require labeled training data and can be applicable to other languages or domains. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our model on a collection of product reviews dataset, where it outperforms other techniques. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Photos are important for a wide variety of documentation purposes, and they play a special role in documenting physical, cognitive, and social changes in young children. This research focuses on the use of photos as evidence of development in preschool children and as a communication medium for current and future interactions. Through field observations and interviews we analyze the use of photos in the process of developing a detailed portfolio of early childhood development. From the moment of capture to selection, analysis, and sharing, teachers carefully employ the properties of photos to construct and communicate evidence of development.
