Social network visualization is useful for understanding the complex structure of collaborative efforts such as citizen science projects. It has been widely accepted by social network analysts for exploring and analyzing networks by visually showing their members, the relationships among them, and their behaviors and attributes. The strength of social network visualization can be increased even further, by incorporating the time dimension of evolving networks. We analyzed the conversation network of a collaborative citizen science web platform called the Encyclopedia of Life using dynamic network visualization methods. This paper shows how the temporal visualization was applied to the social collaboration analysis of EOL and presents the findings. We found that some EOL web site features increased the interactive as well as individual member activities. We also found evidence that EOL curator activities encouraged the activities of other members.

Mixed Reality (MR) simulation, in which a Virtual Reality (VR) system is used to simulate both the real and virtual components of an Augmented Reality (AR) system, has been proposed as a method for evaluating AR systems with greater levels of experimental control. However, factors such as the latency of the MR simulator may impact the validity of experimental results obtained with MR simulation. We present a study evaluating the effects of simulator latency on the equivalence of results from an MR simulator and a real AR system. We designed an AR experiment which required the participants to visually follow a virtual pipe around a small room filled with real targets and to find and identify the targets which were intersected by the pipe. We show that, with a 95% confidence interval, the results from all three simulated AR conditions fall well within one standard deviation of the real AR case.
Recent technological advances in input sensing, as well as ultra-small projectors, have opened up new opportunities for interaction - the use of the body itself as both an input and output platform. Such on-body inter...

In the previous research, the vibrotactile flow that can be generated by the excitation pattern utilizing structural resonance phenomena of a thin plate was smoother than the vibrotactile flow generated by the conventional apparent tactile movement and phantom sensation methods. This paper further investigates effects of three design parameters (signal-duration, time-interval between the two actuating signals, cutoff-time) in the excitation pattern on the smoothness of the vibrotactile flow. User study results show that the time-interval between the two actuating signals is the most important parameter while the signal-duration is the second. This fact can be effectively used when designing an excitation pattern that can generate smoother vibrotactile flow.

One aspect of self-organizing systems is their desired ability to be self-learning, i.e., to be able to adapt dynamically to conditions in their environment. This quality is awkward especially if it comes to applications in security or safety-sensitive areas. Here a step towards more trustful systems could be taken by providing transparency of the processes of a system. An important means of giving feedback to an operator is the visualization of the internal processes of a system. In this position paper we address the problem of visualizing dynamic processes especially in self-learning systems. We take an existing self-learning system from the field of computer vision as an example from which we derive questions of general interest such as possible options to visualize the flow of information in a dynamic learning system or the visualization of symbolic data. As a side effect the visualization of learning processes may provide a better understanding of underlying principles of learning in general, i.e, also in biological systems. That may also facilitate improved designs of future self-learning systems.

To increase the scalability of cloud computing, utilizing resources of individual users has been widely adopted especially in video streaming services. Accurately predicting behavior of user nodes is critical to achieve a high efficiency in such a peer-assisted system. Though there have been many measurement studies on peer-to-peer systems, most of them have focused on the design and characterization of the systems. Thus the behavior patterns of individual nodes have seldom been studied. In this paper, we present new techniques for classifying behavior of nodes in terms of availability and compare them with naive manual classification. We apply a k-means clustering algorithm with various classification criteria on real trace data of a peer-to-peer system. Our analysis shows that there are three dominant time zones with respect to the availability peak time. Our study will give a useful hint to a system designer in handling churns more efficiently based on the peer classification.
