This paper presents a lightweight algorithm for feature extraction, classification of seven different emotions, and facial expression recognition in a real-time manner based on static images of the human face. In this regard, a Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) neural network is trained based on the foregoing algorithm. In order to classify human faces, first, some pre-processing is applied to the input image, which can localize and cut out faces from it. In the next step, a facial landmark detection library is used, which can detect the landmarks of each face. Then, the human face is split into upper and lower faces, which enables the extraction of the desired features from each part. In the proposed model, both geometric and texture-based feature types are taken into account. After the feature extraction phase, a normalized vector of features is created. A 3-layer MLP is trained using these feature vectors, leading to 96% accuracy on the test set. Copyright © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Multimodality-based human action recognition is becoming an increasingly attractive topic as different modalities can provide complementary information. RGB and skeleton data have their pros and limitations for action recognition because they describe the action from distinctive views. Therefore, the fusion of these two modalities using their complementarity is meaningful to action recognition. However, it is difficult to completely utilize the supplementarity of RGB and skeleton data. In this paper, to take advantage of their complementary at the semantic level, A skeleton-embedded network(SE-Net) is proposed by us. The architecture is based on integrating their feature in the network not only a post-hoc fusion. With a sparse sampling strategy, which is efficient for learning using the whole action video. To examine the performance of our method, we conducted experiments on the wildly used datasets, obtaining an accuracy of 86.4% in C-sub and 88.2% in C-view on NTU-RGB+D 60. For NTU-RGB+D 120, the accuracy of 81.3% in C-sub and 83.4% in C-set is obtained. © 2023 IEEE.

TOWARD ADVERSARIAL TRAINING ON CONTEXTUALIZED LANGUAGE REPRESENTATION

Beyond the success story of adversarial training (AT) in the recent text domain on top of pre-trained language models (PLMs), our empirical study showcases the inconsistent gains from AT on some tasks, e.g. commonsense reasoning, named entity recognition. This paper investigates AT from the perspective of the contextualized language representation outputted by PLM encoders. We find the current AT attacks lean to generate sub-optimal adversarial examples that can fool the decoder part but have a minor effect on the encoder. However, we find it necessary to effectively deviate the latter one to allow AT to gain. Based on the observation, we propose simple yet effective Contextualized representation-Adversarial Training (CreAT), in which the attack is explicitly optimized to deviate the contextualized representation of the encoder. It allows a global optimization of adversarial examples that can fool the entire model. We also find CreAT gives rise to a better direction to optimize the adversarial examples, to let them less sensitive to hyperparameters. Compared to AT, CreAT produces consistent performance gains on a wider range of tasks and is proven to be more effective for language pretraining where only the encoder part is kept for downstream tasks. We achieve the new state-of-the-art performances on a series of challenging benchmarks, e.g. AdvGLUE (59.1 → 61.1), HellaSWAG (93.0 → 94.9), ANLI (68.1 → 69.3). Copyright © 2023, The Authors. Virtual reality (VR) volleyball games can provide an immersive entertainment experience and facilitate users to get familiar with game rules. In real world, players often experience emotions from scores, strokes, passes, and the influence from their teammates or opponents, and so forth. However, seldom studies are carried out for this emotional experience in a virtual environment, as most VR volleyball games mainly concentrate on the game playing, such as body movements. In this article, we propose to enhance emotional experience by building emotional virtual characters in VR volleyball games. The virtual characters cannot only arouse their emotions but also express their facial expressions according to the game situation. Emotion patterns are learned from real-world volleyball matches. The results demonstrate that our framework has great potential to enhance the user's emotional experience and engagement. © 2021 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Safety alignment is indispensable for Large Language Models (LLMs) to defend threats from malicious instructions. However, recent researches reveal safety-aligned LLMs tend to reject benign queries due to the exaggerated safety issue, limiting their helpfulness. In this paper, we propose a Safety-Conscious Activation Steering (SCANS) method to mitigate the exaggerated safety concerns in aligned LLMs. First, SCANS extracts the refusal steering vectors within the activation space and utilizes vocabulary projection to anchor some specific safety-critical layers which influence model refusal behavior. Second, by tracking the hidden state transition, SCANS identifies the steering direction and steers the model behavior accordingly, achieving a balance between exaggerated safety and adequate safety. Experiments show that SCANS achieves new state-of-the-art performance on XSTest and OKTest benchmarks, without impairing their defense capability against harmful queries and maintaining almost unchanged model capability. Despite considerable research underscoring the importance of carbohydrate intake in relation to the risk of type 2 diabetes(T2D),a comprehensive assessment of this relationship is currently *** aimed to examine the associations of various types and food sources of dietary carbohydrate intake with the risk of T2D,to evaluate potential effect modification by other factors,including genetic susceptibility,and to explore the potential mediators for such *** present study included 161,872 participants of the UK Biobank who were free of prevalent cancer,cardiovascular disease,or diabetes,and had at least one validated 24-h dietary recall *** age-stratified Cox proportional hazard regression models were applied to estimate hazard ratios(HRs)and 95%confidence intervals(CI)for the associations of various types and food sources of dietary carbohydrate intake with risk of *** a median follow-up of 13.6 years,4,176 incident cases of T2D were *** the multivariable-adjusted models,a greater intake of fiber,carbohydrates from whole grains,and carbohydrates from non-starchy vegetables was significantly associated with a lower risk of T2D(highest *** quantile,HR[95%CI]=0.70[0.62–0.79],0.74[0.67–0.82],and 0.83[0.75–0.92],respectively,all P for trend<0.005).In contrast,a higher intake of starch and carbohydrate from starchy vegetables was associated with an increased risk of T2D(highest *** quantile,HR[95%CI]=1.31[1.16–1.48]and 1.19[1.09–1.31],respectively,both P for trend<0.005).Replacing one serving of refined grains or starchy vegetables with an equal amount of whole grains or non-starchy vegetables was associated with 4%to 10%lower risk of T2D(all P values<0.001).The observed associations were generally similar across population subgroups,including individuals with different genetic susceptibility to *** analyses of the inverse association between T2D risk and isocaloric substitution of carbohy

Cellular-connected unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) communications is an enabling technology to transmit control signaling or payload data for UAVs through cellular networks. Due to the line-of-sight dominant air-to-ground channels, efficient interference mitigation is crucial to UAV communications, while the conventional fixed-position antenna (FPA) arrays have limited degrees of freedom to suppress the interference between the UAV and its non-associated co-channel base stations (BSs). To address this challenge, we propose in this letter a new approach by utilizing the six-dimensional movable antenna (6DMA) arrays to enhance the interference mitigation for the UAV. Specifically, we propose an efficient block coordinate descent algorithm to iteratively optimize the antenna position vector, array rotation vector, receive beamforming vector, and associated BS of the UAV to maximize its signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio. Numerical results show that the proposed 6DMA enhanced cellular-connected UAV communication can significantly outperform that with the traditional FPA arrays and other benchmark schemes in terms of interference mitigation. © 2025 IEEE. Intertemporal reflection, flexibly thinking forward and backward in time, is vital for one's future planning. Yet, cultivating intertemporal reflection about encountering difficult futures, e.g., developing a progressive cognitive condition like dementia, can be challenging. We assessed people's attitudes towards dementia following conversing with a chatbot presented as either neurotypical or simulating dementia symptoms. While neither the chatbot's presentation nor the framing of participants' future selves impacted attitudes toward dementia, it influenced participants' experiences. When framed as future selves, the chatbot evoked a strong emotional connection, leading to reflection on aging, particularly with the chatbot simulating dementia symptoms. Participants interacting with the chatbot framed as a stranger with simulated symptoms often felt frustrated, especially when they had a task-oriented *** can be promising tools for prompting reflections on challenging futures, such as dementia, although their effectiveness varies due to the tensions between simulated cognitive decline and expectations for effective communication. © 2025 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

Compliant mechanisms enable the creation of compact and easy-to-fabricate devices for tangible interaction. This work explores interconnected compliant mechanisms consisting of multiple joints and rigid bodies to transmit and process displacements as signals that result from physical interactions. As these devices are difficult to design due to their vast and complex design space, we developed a graph-based design algorithm and computational tool to help users program and customize such computational functions and procedurally model physical designs. When combined with active materials with actuation and sensing capabilities, these devices can also render and detect haptic interaction. Our design examples demonstrate the tool's capability to respond to relevant HCI concepts, including building modular physical interface toolkits, encrypting tangible interactions, and customizing user augmentation for accessibility. We believe the tool will facilitate the generation of new interfaces with enriched affordance. © 2025 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

This article proposes the Mobile Office, an AR-Based System for productivity applications in industrial environments. It focuses on addressing workers’ needs while mobilizing in complex environments and when workers want to do productive work similar to a workstation setting. For this purpose, the Mobile Office relies on a bi-modal approach (mobile and static modes) to addresses both scenarios while considering critical aspects such as UI, ergonomics, interaction, safety, and cognitive user abilities. Its development relies first on a systematic literature review for establishing guidelines and system aspects. Then AR-UI mockups are presented to incorporate literature and authors’ expertise in this area. Three hardware configurations are also presented for the implementation of the Mobile Office. Validation of the Mobile Office was made through a survey to potential users that provided their feedback about their perceptions of proposed system. The survey results revealed concordance of critical aspects of particular importance for effective productivity support on the Mobile Office’s focus scenarios. We incorporated these critical aspects and suggested future research direction for the Mobile Office’s further development and significance. © 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
