It has been widely observed that there exists no universal best Multi-objective Evolutionary Algorithm (MOEA) dominating all other MOEAs on all possible Multi-objective Optimization Problems (MOPs). In this work, we advocate using the Parallel Algorithm Portfolio (PAP), which runs multiple MOEAs independently in parallel and gets the best out of them, to combine the advantages of different MOEAs. Since the manual construction of PAPs is non-trivial and tedious, we propose to automatically construct high-performance PAPs for solving MOPs. Specifically, we first propose a variant of PAPs, namely MOEAs/PAP, which can better determine the output solution set for MOPs than conventional PAPs. Then, we present an automatic construction approach for MOEAs/PAP with a novel performance metric for evaluating the performance of MOEAs across multiple MOPs. Finally, we use the proposed approach to construct a MOEAs/PAP based on a training set of MOPs and an algorithm configuration space defined by several variants of NSGA-II. Experimental results show that the automatically constructed MOEAs/PAP can even rival the state-of-the-art ensemble MOEAs designed by human experts, demonstrating the huge potential of automatic construction of PAPs in multi-objective optimization. To provide a sustainable fiber-to-the-home (FTTH), several multiplexing techniques have been developed for this purpose. The correlation features are the main obstacle behind the network performance limitation, which imposes to a high level of multiple access interference. However, the development of multiplexing techniques helps to overcome these limitations, such as optical-code division multiple access (Optical-CDMA). Optical-CDMA is considered as one of the most powerful solutions for FTTH. This paper aims to enhance FTTH network performance by applying Zero cross-correlation code (ZCC) with Optical-CDMA with maximum link single-mode fiber. In the simulation, the system performance is demonstrated in terms of bit error rate, Q-Factor and eye diagram measurements. © 2020 IOP Publishing Ltd. All rights reserved.

Towards expert gaze modeling and recognition of a user’s attention in realtime

One of the appealing areas of expertise research is devoted to measuring the effectiveness of training programs for novices. With recent progress in eye tracking, gaze-based interaction systems recognize a user’s attention and can direct it accordingly. Moreover, dynamic visualization of an expert gaze model facilitates novice training by guiding the gaze to relevant areas. In addition, the system should be aware of realtime attention to remove an overlay that could occlude relevant information. We use an implementation of subtle gaze direction (SGD) and the simplified scanpath of a dentist to train naive participants in finding anomalies in dental radiographs. We were able to effectively direct user gaze to relevant image features without occluding the area when attention was recognized. Additionally, participants reported that the intervention was helpful for image inspection. The results of the model intervention show minimal improvements in anomaly detection, which is expected of naive subjects. We advocate that the system has the potential to be highly effective for advanced students and trainees with a certain foundation of conceptual knowledge.

A comprehensive evaluation of pathological gait patterns is essential for understanding the underlying pathology and its progression to deliver personalized treatments. One quantitative indicator for assessing fall risks during walking is margin of stability (MoS), a measure of instantaneous mechanical stability derived from the dynamic relationship between the extrapolated center of mass (CoM) and the center of pressure. However, extrapolating CoM during movement is not straightforward, and there is an undesired variability induced by the selected measurement protocol, which often depends on the available technology. Up until now, the extent of this variability has not been investigated systematically. This study compares four different CoM estimation methods. Based on the Conventional Gait Model, the first two methods estimate CoM using virtual sacrum (1) and pelvis centroid (2). The third method estimates CoM from ground reaction force (3), and the last method uses the accelerometer and gyroscope data from a smartphone mounted on the lower back. 21 healthy subjects (10 female, 11 male, age: 31.7 ± 9.0 years;BMI: 24.7 ± 3.5 kg m-2) walked on an instrumented treadmill at a fixed speed at 1.3 m s -1 for 3 minutes. Descriptive statistical analysis was performed, including temporal and normalized gait cycle analysis, focusing on the minimum and maximum MoS, and its ranges during walking. SPMld with paired t-tests was employed for the analysis. Our results suggest that CoM estimation varies significantly depending on the selected measurement protocol and technology which should be considered while reporting and interpreting MoS results. © 2024 IEEE.

Understanding the functional architecture of complex systems is crucial to illuminate their inner workings and enable effective methods for their prediction and control. Recent advances have introduced tools to characterise emergent macroscopic levels;however, while these approaches are successful in identifying when emergence takes place, they are limited in the extent they can determine how it does. Here we address this important limitation by developing a computational approach to emergence, which characterises macroscopic processes in terms of their computational capabilities. Concretely, we articulate a view on emergence based on how software works, which is rooted on a mathematical formalisation of how macroscopic processes can express self-contained informational, interventional, and computational properties. This framework reveals a hierarchy of nested self-contained processes that determines what computations take place at what level, which in turn delineates the functional architecture of a complex system. This approach is illustrated on paradigmatic models from the statistical physics and computational neuroscience literature, which are shown to exhibit macroscopic processes that are akin to software in human-engineered systems. Overall, this framework enables a deeper understanding of the multi-level structure of complex systems, revealing specific ways in which they can be efficiently simulated, predicted, and controlled. Smart manufacturing systems combine collaborative and autonomous control systems to provide optimal performance and respond to volatile demands. A key component of smart manufacturing is material management, as raw materials, work-in-progress, and finished products must be transported to the right location at the right time. However, during the production phase, it is imperative to establish an optimal traffic control scheme in order to avoid congestion and optimize material flow. This paper proposes a platooning-based control procedure implemented in a virtual agent-based manufacturing environment to increase the material flow efficiency on a manufacturing shop floor. An analysis of the production makespan and an indicator of the level of congestion in the material handling system was conducted in order to determine productivity improvements. An agent-based simulation is used to test the effectiveness of the novel platooning approach versus a traditional basic approach. A multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) reveals that the inclusion of a platoon-based procedure improves production performance and reduces congestion risks.

Effective water resource management requires information on water availability - both in terms of quality and quantity - spatially and temporally. In this paper, we study the methodology behind Transfer Learning (TL) through fine-tuning and parameter transferring for better generalization performance of streamflow prediction in data-sparse regions. We propose a standard recurrent neural network in the form of Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) to fit on a sufficiently large source domain dataset and repurpose the learned weights to a significantly smaller, yet similar target domain datasets. We present a methodology to implement transfer learning approaches for spatiotemporal applications by separating the spatial and temporal components of the model and training the model to generalize based on categorical datasets representing spatial variability. The framework is developed on a rich benchmark dataset from the US and evaluated on a smaller dataset collected by The Nature Conservancy in Kenya. The LSTM model exhibits generalization performance through our TL technique. Results from this current experiment demonstrate the effective predictive skill of forecasting streamflow responses when knowledge transferring and static descriptors are used to improve hydrologic model generalization in data-sparse regions. © 2021, CC BY.

The task of semantic role labeling (SRL) is dedicated to finding the predicate-argument structure. Previous works on SRL are mostly supervised and do not consider the difficulty in labeling each example which can be very expensive and time-consuming. In this paper, we present the first neural unsupervised model for SRL. To decompose the task as two argument related subtasks, identification and clustering, we propose a pipeline that correspondingly consists of two neural modules. First, we train a neural model on two syntax-aware statistically developed rules. The neural model gets the relevance signal for each token in a sentence, to feed into a BiLSTM, and then an adversarial layer for noise-adding and classifying simultaneously, thus enabling the model to learn the semantic structure of a sentence. Then we propose another neural model for argument role clustering, which is done through clustering the learned argument embeddings biased towards their dependency relations. Experiments on CoNLL-2009 English dataset demonstrate that our model outperforms previous state-of-the-art baseline in terms of non-neural models for argument identification and classification. Rare diseases have extremely low-data regimes, unlike common diseases with large amount of available labeled data. Hence, to train a neural network to classify rare diseases with a few per-class data samples is very challenging, and so far, catches very little attention. In this paper, we present a difficulty-aware meta-learning method to address rare disease classifications and demonstrate its capability to classify dermoscopy images. Our key approach is to first train and construct a meta-learning model from data of common diseases, then adapt the model to perform rare disease classification. To achieve this, we develop the difficulty-aware meta-learning method that dynamically monitors the importance of learning tasks during the meta-optimization stage. To evaluate our method, we use the recent ISIC 2018 skin lesion classification dataset, and show that with only five samples per class, our model can quickly adapt to classify unseen classes by a high AUC of 83.3%. Also, we evaluated several rare disease classification results in the public Dermofit Image Library to demonstrate the potential of our method for real clinical practice. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2020.

Falls occur frequently in daily life and the damage to the body is irreversible. Therefore, it is crucial to implement timely and effective warning and protection systems for falls to minimize the damage caused by falls. Currently, the fall warning algorithm has shortcomings such as low recognition rates for falls and fall-risk movements and insufficient lead-time, the time before the subject impacts the floor, making it difficult for falling protection devices to function effectively. In this study, a multi-scale falls warning algorithm based on offset displacement is built, and a hip protection system is designed. The performance of the algorithm and the system is validated using 150 falling and 500 fall-risk actions from 10 volunteers. The results showed that the recognition accuracy for falling actions is 98.7% and the recognition accuracy for fall-risk actions is 99.4%, with an average lead-time of 402ms. The protection rate for falling movements reached 98.7%. This proposed algorithm and hip protection system have the potential to be applied in elderly communities, hospitals, and homes to reduce the damage caused by *** Relevance— This study provides important reference for clinicians in analyzing fall behaviors to patients at risk of falls in clinical settings, offering valuable technical support for ensuring the safety of patients in danger of falling. It also contributes to further promoting the development of falling-prevention medical devices.
