Vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) take vital role in intelligent transportation systems, but they face challenges due to dynamic network topology, impacting communication efficiency, especially with increasing active nodes. Security and privacy concerns are paramount, necessitating authentication to ensure only legitimate vehicles access the network. Secure vehicular clustering offers a solution, yet the number of clusters affects network dependability and efficiency. To tackle this, we present a secure clustering mechanism using Bat optimization algorithm, mimicking echolocation behavior to optimize clusters. We introduce an authentication technique for cluster heads to admit approved members, enhancing vehicular authentication. Simulations using MATLAB evaluate our approach, showing improved performance in end-to-end delay, overhead, and cluster head count compared to similar methods. © 2024 IEEE.

Colorectal intraepithelial neoplasia is a precancerous lesion of colorectal cancer, which is mainly diagnosed using pathological images. According to the characteristics of lesions, precancerous lesions can be classified into four different grades, i.e., background, normal, low and high level. However, due to the continuity of lesion development, tissue in different stages has high similarity. Recently, visual transformers have achieved impressive results in different visual tasks, due to their capacity of capturing long-range dependencies. However, due to computational cost, transformer cannot well extract detailed feature, which is important for lesion grading. To accurately segment pathological tissues with high similarity, in this work, we embed the multi-head MLP mixer module in the transformer network to extract cell and edge information. Furthermore, we propose a hierarchical MLP decoder to facilitate multi-scale feature fusion. The proposed transformer, namely MLPFormer, achieves remarkable results against competitive baselines on the Histo-CRC Biopsy dataset. The experimental results demonstrate that MLPFormer significantly outperforms the competitive baselines, i.e., a 3% dice improvement is achieved over the SegFormer series. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag London Ltd., part of Springer Nature 2024.

To improve the performance of the original backtracking search algorithm (BSA), this work combines BSA with a centralized population initialization and an elitism-based local escape operator and proposes a new, improved variant of BSA called CiBSA. BSA's performance is improved by centralized population initialization regarding search capability, convergence speed, and capacity to jump out of the local optimum. The suggested algorithm's elitism-based local escape operator method prevents BSA searching slowness and enhances convergence rates and local search efficiency. The performance of the proposed algorithm has been tested on a set of 54 test suites. An extensive comparison with other recent meta-heuristics algorithms (MA) demonstrates that both methodologies substantially assist BSA in boosting the quality of its solutions and speeding up the convergence rate. The proposed CiBSA is then applied to a real-world problem: image segmentation using Kapur's entropy function. The proposed CiBSA is successfully applied to the segmentation of COVID-19 CT images using Kapur's entropy for grey-scale images. Considering the performance matrices Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio (PSNR), Structural Similarity Index (SSIM), Feature Similarity Index (FSIM), and Intersection over Union (IoU), the suggested CiBSA outperformed conventional MA algorithms. In COVID-19 CT image segmentation trials, CiBSA has superior segmentation capability and adaptability at varied threshold levels than other approaches. The fact that early-stage breast cancer typically presents no signs, poses a global risk to the lives of women. Digital mammography is just one method among many that can detect breast cancer in its early stages. Despite extensive research, most methods for detecting breast cancers still produce a large number of false positives. The difficulty in improving detection accuracy is in reducing false positives by differentiating masses from normal tissues. Using the textural properties of the masses, this study aims to develop a computer-aided diagnosis system that reduces the number of false positive and negative mammography results. The suggested method initially partitions regions of interest (ROI) into small patches to extract an abnormality region and micro-pattern, which permits the extraction of specific information about the image's content in targeted areas. Reducing the computational complexity of an image analysis operation is accomplished by partitioning a ROI into smaller patches rather than processing the complete image at once. Due to the significant impact the noise has on detection accuracy in mammograms, a textural descriptor that is insensitive to noise is introduced to describe image features such as lines, spots, flat areas, and edges. By expanding the rotation-invariant and noise-tolerant descriptor histograms, we generate an improved histogram that preserves the original regional patterns and spatial relationships between masses. To distinguish between "normal" and "mass" and "benign" and "malignant", Support Vector Machines (SVM) is employed with grid search based hyperparameter optimization. Our proposed approach was evaluated using the Digital Database for Screening Mammography (DDSM), which contains over 1024 ROI cases. This database is a well-established benchmark for testing new mammography analysis methods. The advent of Ultra-Low-Latency storage devices has narrowed the performance gap between storage and CPU in computing platforms, facilitating synchronous I/O adoption. Yet, this approach introduces substantial busy waiting time and underutilizes computing units. To address this, we propose a light-weighted Idle-Time-Stealing (ITS) design. This involves a self-improving thread conducting prefetching for high-priority processes during synchronous I/O, and an I/O-waiting process continuing subsequent instruction executions when justifiable. Another thread, the self-sacrificing thread, proactively switches low-priority process I/O requests from synchronous to asynchronous mode, prioritizing high-priority executions. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of our ITS design in reducing CPU idle time. © 2024 Copyright is held by the owner/author(s). Publication rights licensed to ACM.

For future Internet of Vehicles (IoV), communications and computing will converge to provide services. Federated learning (FL), as one of the typical distributed computing technologies, needs to be integrated with IoV. For such integration, FL suffers from the straggler effect that the entire learning speed is lowered down, because of the existence of the devices, such as low-powered road side units and vehicles, taking more time to complete their tasks. Although the existing mechanisms reduce straggler effects by adopting asynchronous mechanisms and clustering mechanisms, they lack the detailed analysis of the reasons and the impacts of each cause, leading to inefficiencies in the design of algorithm. Additionally, most of the existing work only considered the impact of a single factor in computation, communication, or data distribution, which lacks comprehensive on research for causes of stragglers effects. The bottleneck is that it is laborious to observe the time delay precisely with the existing high-calculating evaluations. In this article, we elaborately explore the effects of computing power, communication capability, and data distributions on the straggler effects with carefully designing and conducting the extensive experiments. After investigations, we propose a novel learning completion time estimation formula for low computing capability devices with mini-batch stochastic gradient decent (SGD). We compare our proposed estimation formula with the one based on floating operation per second (FLOPs). Through the evaluations, our formula can demonstrate the improvement up to 72.4% at docker and 32.4% at Raspberry Pi device compared to the existing work. © 2014 IEEE.

Chemical environment adaptive learning for optical band gap prediction of doped graphitic carbon nitride nanosheets

This study presents a new machine learning algorithm, named Chemical Environment Graph Neural network (ChemGNN), designed to accelerate materials property prediction and advance new materials discovery. Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) and its doped variants have gained significant interest for their potential as optical materials. Accurate prediction of their band gaps is crucial for practical applications;however, traditional quantum simulation methods are computationally expensive and challenging to explore the vast space of possible doped molecular structures. The proposed ChemGNN leverages the learning ability of current graph neural networks (GNNs) to satisfactorily capture the characteristics of atoms' chemical environment underlying complex molecular structures. Our experimental results demonstrate more than 100% improvement in band gap prediction accuracy over existing GNNs on g-C3N4. Furthermore, the general ChemGNN model can precisely foresee band gaps of various doped g-C3N4 structures, making it a valuable tool for performing high-throughput prediction in materials design and development. © The Author(s) 2024.

With the advancement of information technology, research on non-contact methods as well as contact methods using keyboards and controllers as methods of operating devices has been progressing. One such method is handwriting characters in the air (hereinafter called "KUSHO"), which allows users to input information to devices through characters written in the air. KUSHO enables users to transmit information by writing characters towards a camera. It involves three steps: tracking hand movements from camera images, converting tracking information into features, and recognizing input information from features. KUSHO offers advantages such as non-contact operation without special devices and intuitive operation using familiar characters. By the way, in a kitchen, workers confirm orders and cooking procedures, operate cooking equipment and transmit information between processes. Additionally, although display devices are used to transmit information in large-scale restaurants, the use of devices is not suitable for tasks that involve dirty hands due to hygiene concerns. Paper-based communication is also used, however, it can easily get dirty in a kitchen with water and oil. In addition, the use of voice dictation, which has been developed in recent years as a non-contact operation method, is difficult due to its tendency to generate noise, and considering the diversification of customer demands, it is necessary to consider new support methods in terms of information handling. Therefore, this study proposed a method of applying KUSHO in restaurant kitchens, where quick communication is necessary while maintaining hygiene. Following this, the proposed methods were implemented and their potential was discussed through a comparison of recognition rates between different methods, and experiments of command input by signals during KUSHO and KUSHO input for information management assuming kitchens. © 2023 computers and Industrial engineering. Maintaining reliable and long-lasting road infrastructure requires accurate identification and management of pavement cracks, as these cracks can significantly weaken asphalt and concrete surfaces over time. Although Convolutional Neural networks (CNNs) and meta-heuristic algorithms have proven effective in solving real-world problems, their use in low-contrast pavement crack images is worth investigating. This study proposes an automated crack detection framework that integrates three key components: (1) a new variant of a pre-trained CNN architecture, referred to as Modified EfficientNetV2 (MEfficientNetV2) for pavement crack classification;(2) a combination of opposition-based learning with White Shark Optimizer (WSO), known as Opposition WSO (OWSO), to improve the balance between exploration and exploitation;and (3) Principal Component Analysis (PCA) for efficient dimensionality reduction and feature selection. This method is validated on various publicly available asphalt crack datasets that contain low-contrast natural images. Preprocessing techniques are first applied to eliminate noise and enhance image quality. The OWSO algorithm is then integrated to optimize the classification performance of MEfficientNetV2, while PCA accelerates the learning process by retaining critical features in the thresholds of the varying components. Comparative evaluations with state-of-the-art methods demonstrate that the proposed model excels in terms of precision, robustness, and generalizability. The outcome emphasizes its ability to identify the most effective solution for crack detection in practical scenarios, where PCA-based feature selection improves computational efficiency without compromising performance. This study focuses on the potential of hybrid deep learning and bio-inspired optimization strategies to improve automated pavement maintenance systems. © 2020 IEEE.
