A CMOS power amplifier for an RFID reader, which is implemented in a 0.18 mum CMOS process, is designed on a system IC, including output matching circuits. The developed amplifier has an efficiency of 27 % at 900 MHz and an output power of 24 dBm with a supply voltage of 1.8 V. In addition, it is isolated with shielding metal lines and is ESD protected. Furthermore, it is robust to high supply voltages and load impedance variations.

The single sustaining driver (SSD) for AC plasma display panel (AC-PDP) can simplify and optimize the circuit part of PDP, however it suffers from twice a high voltage stress of switches compared with conventional sustaining driver (SD). To solve this problem, new SSD employing the voltage stress reduction technique (VSRT) is proposed. By adjusting the gate timing with the proposed simple structure, the voltage stresses of all devices are effectively ensured at Vs. Therefore, the proposed SSD features a low cost, reduced heating, and a simple structure.

Most of the traditional cooperative caching schemes were developed so that remote users may share files in network file systems, but were not designed for supporting recent cluster based Web servers with content based request distribution. For this reason, although the schemes are applied to the Web servers, their performance suffers from high disk accesses and large block access latency. The paper proposes and evaluates a new cooperative caching suitable for file systems in the Web servers. By exploiting the characteristics of the Web servers, it performs a cache replacement, called Duplicate First copy Replacement (DFR) to avoid caching unnecessary data produced during serving remote client requests, and thus minimizes disk accesses. Also, it reduces the overhead and block access latency required to fetch a file block (or page) in the cooperative cache with regard to both the content based Web server architecture and characteristics. Trace-driven simulation shows that our cooperating caching decreases the disk access ratio by 29%, and reduces block access latency by about 26% more than the existing cooperative algorithms.

In this paper, we have proposed and fabricated a new push-pull type SPDT switch implemented in a single structure with torsion bars actuated by the combination of electromagnetic and electrostatic forces for low power and low voltage operation. The proposed switch is actuated by using large electromagnetic force at low voltage to change its state and is held to maintain its state by electrostatic force to reduce static power consumption. From the prototype, actuation voltage is measured as 4.3V and required energy is below 15.4/spl mu/J per each switching. Also, we have successfully carried out a lifetime test over more than 166 million cycles without significant degradation of switch characteristics.

We propose new analysis method to estimate the traffic performance of communication channel for system-on-chip (SoC). We define the channel utilization ratio, and we analyze the traffic performance of multi-master system-onchip on shared channel architecture by measure of the arbitration latency. This method is efficient to evaluate the traffic characteristics of the shared channel architecture. And this results offer the methods to optimize the parameter of the components to achieve high performance channel. To verify the efficiency of this method, we experiment the latency of single shared channel architecture by various conditions of components composing SoC. We simulated the effect of number of masters and 2 types of arbitration algorithm by using defined channel utilization ratio. In this analysis, it is found that the arbitration latency increases with the number of masters and channel utilization ratio. The arbitration algorithm affects the arbitration latency according to the number of masters. The throughput of data transaction is proportional to channel utilization ratio.

An active vision system can control the gaze direction of mounted vision sensors and can overcome many shortcomings of other passive vision systems, which have fixed vision sensors. Furthermore, most visual servoing approaches are concerned with a vision sensor or a passive stereo vision system which has fixed relative coordination between two cameras. In this paper, the problem of controlling a motion by visual servoing with an active stereo vision system is addressed. The main goal is to track the object with our active vision system. Firstly, we discuss how to stack image Jacobians in an active stereo vision system and how to control the active stereo cameras based on images. Next, we introduce our active vision system, which has a fast and simple system architecture that uses a high-speed serial communication bus (IEEE 1394a). It is manipulated by a distributed and jerk-bounded control algorithm to ensure smooth system motion. Finally, simulation and experimental results show both the validity of the proposed definition of the stacked Jacobian to control the system and the feasibility of the proposed the control method.

This paper proposes a new edge detection method using a 3/spl times/3 ideal binary pattern and lookup table (LUT) for the mobile robot localization without any parameter adjustments. We take the mean of the pixels within the 3/spl times/3 block as a threshold by which the pixels are divided into two groups. The edge magnitude and orientation are calculated by taking the difference of average intensities of the two groups and by searching directional code in the LUT, respectively. And also the input image is not only partitioned into multiple groups according to their intensity similarities by the histogram, but also the threshold of each group is determined by fuzzy reasoning automatically. Finally, the edges are determined through non-maximum suppression using edge confidence measure and edge linking. Applying this edge detection method to the mobile robot localization using projective invariance of the cross ratio, we demonstrate the robustness of the proposed method to the illumination changes in a corridor environment.

The topics of uncertain chaos synchronization have drawn considerable attentions in the last decades. To investigate them in a novel way, an application through particle swarm optimization (PSO) simulating the swarm intelligence is proposed. With two novel techniques, boundary restriction strategy for PSO and transferring the problems of chaos synchronization into a series of multimodal nonlinear optimization problems, synchronization of Henon systems with different cases of system parameters identical, different and uncertain from different initials are discussed respectively. Numerical experiments done by PSO demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed ideas.

In this paper, a new two mode Q-learning using both the success and failure experiences of an agent is proposed for the fast convergence, which extends Q-learning, a well-known scheme used for reinforcement learning. In the Q-learning, if the agent enters into the "fail" state, it receives a punishment from environment. By this punishment, the Q value of the action which generated the failure experience is decreased. On the other hand, the proposed two mode Q-learning is based on both the normal and failure Q values for the selection of the action in a state-action space. To determine the failure Q value using the previous failure experience of the agent, it employs a failure Q value module. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method, it is compared with the conventional Q-learning in a goalie system to perform goalkeeping in robot soccer.
