In industrial assembly, a registration mark can be placed on parts to aid a computer vision system in determining the position and orientation (pose) of parts. However, when sensor noise and limits on resolution introduce errors in the measured location of the registration mark, these errors can propagate into the measurement of part pose. In this paper, we define the registration mark problem: given an n-sided rigid planar polygonal part-and a set of k poses for the part, locate a point on the surface of the part that maximizes the minimum distance between transformed points. A registration mark at this point will be maximally robust to sensor imperfections. We give an 0(n log n + k4 log k log* k) time algorithm to solve this planar problem using a result from Schwartz and Sharir [21], and demonstrate the algorithm using a commercial vision system. Our results extend to classes of curved planar parts and polyhedral parts.

In this paper we present a robust adaptive control for a class of uncertain continuous time multiple input multiple output (MIMO) nonlinear systems. Multiple multi-layer neural networks are employed to approximate the uncertainty of the nonlinear functions, and robustifying control terms are used to compensate for approximation errors. All parameter adaptive laws and robustifying control terms are derived based on Lyapunov stability analysis so that, under appropriate assumptions, semi-global stability of the closed-loop system is guaranteed, and the tracking error asymptotically converges to zero. Simulations performed on a two-link robot manipulator illustrate the approach and its performance.

Quadtrees are compact hierarchical representations of images. In this paper, we define the efficiency of quadtrees in representing image segments and derive the relationship between the size of the enclosing rectangle of an image segment and its optimal quadtree. We show that if an image segment has an enclosing rectangle having sides of lengths x and y, such that 2N-1 × max (x, y) ⩽ 2N, then the optimal quadtree may be the one representing an image of size 2N × 2N or 2N+1 × 2N+1. It is shown that in some situations the quadtree corresponding to the larger image has fewer nodes. Also, some necessary conditions are derived to identify segments for which the larger image size results in a quadtree which is no more expensive than the quadtree for the smaller image size.

Microblogging provides a new platform for com- municating and sharing information among Web users. Users can express opinions and record daily life using microblogs. Microblogs that are posted by users indicate their interests to some extent. We aim to mine user interests via keyword extraction from microblogs. Traditional keyword extraction methods are usually designed for formal documents such as news articles or scientific papers. Messages posted by mi- croblogging users, however, are usually noisy and full of new words, which is a challenge for keyword extraction. In this paper, we combine a translation-based method with a frequency-based method for keyword extraction. In our ex- periments, we extract keywords for microblog users from the largest microblogging website in China, Sina Weibo. The re- suits show that our method can identify users' interests accu- rately and efficiently.

The multispectral signature of features has been used for identification of objects in remotely sensed scenes for a number of years. Recently these techniques have been applied to feature selection in natural scenes. Due to the inherent noise and degradation of the input cues to the algorithms, meaningful image segmentation is a difficult process. In an effort to reduce the sensitivity of a system to these problems, we have been led to the development of a iterative fuzzy clustering technique for image segmentation. It is believed that this method represents an image segmentation scheme which can be used as a preprocessor for a multivalued logic based computer vision system.
