Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs or drones) have been extensively applied in monitoring studies to address marine and terrestrial wildlife animals. The main advantages of UAV s are their operational flexibility and low cost. In the last few years, the need to safeguard and protect the population of cetaceans in the Gulf of Taranto (Northern Ionian Sea, Central-eastern Mediterranean Sea) has grown in importance, and the UAVs video-analysis systems meet this need. In particular, dolphins, which can be potentially harmed by human activities in this area, could benefit a lot from the use and the application of automatic systems, in terms of estimation of group size and abundance. The goal of this study is to develop an automated non-invasive system for the analysis of videos acquired by UAV s, devoted to the estimation of cetaceans group size and abundance. An automated system like the proposed one would allow having an immediate estimate of the number of the encountered cetaceans, onboard the vessel, to be compared with the estimation made by the Marine Mammal Observer (MMO) in charge or it would be a useful support system for the expert when he has to analyze the video in the laboratory. In this paper, as a case of study, the UAV s video-analysis system has been applied on videos acquired by a camera mounted on a drone, during surveys in the Gulf of Taranto. Two different models of machine learning were used, and both the trained models are able to solve the task well albeit with some limitations. © 2022 University of Split, FESB.

In recent years, the impressive growth of new wireless technologies, together with the appearance of new requirements in applications and services, is progressively changing the use of networks. Due to the high mobility required, the network must adapt to the infrastructure to meet the demands of the users. As a result, service providers currently have to over-provision network capacity, which is costly. In addition, considering efficient resource planning in advance involves a lot of labor-intensive efforts. Consequently, network usage analysis is a very useful tool that allows network administrators to find patterns and anomalies. Whilst pattern detection provides administrators the ability to define the infrastructure, anomaly detection provides rich and valuable information for certain applications, for example, to avoid network saturation in urban areas during peak hours. This article proposes a new methodology based on orthogonal projections over Call Detail Records (CDR) for anomaly detection to help in the dynamic management of the network in an urban area. The method is evaluated in a real scenario provided by an Italian telecommunications operator, considering different locations in the Milan metropolitan area, differentiated by the geographic resolution of the data, reaching F1 scores above 0.8. In addition, a new ground truth is presented, hoping it will become a reference data set for the community, in the form of a set of locations that have been corroborated for use in evaluating anomaly detection techniques. © 2023, The Author(s).

Compounding is a common type of word formation extensively studied in linguistics and cognitive psychology. A growing line of research suggests that the lexicon supports efficient communication by balancing informativeness and simplicity. We propose that the formation of novel compounds reflects a similar tradeoff between informativeness and word length. We formalize this hypothesis in information-theoretic terms and develop a computational procedure to evaluate our hypothesis on English noun compounds that emerged over the past century. We find that attested compounds achieve more efficient tradeoffs between informativeness and word length than do alternative word forms. Our work demonstrates how word formation and compositionality can be connected with information-theoretic approaches to the design of the lexicon. © 2022 The Author(s). On the Trade-Off between Stability and Representational Capacity in Graph Neural Networks

Analyzing the stability of graph neural networks (GNNs) under topological perturbations is key to understanding their transferability and the role of each architecture component. However, stability has been investigated only for particular architectures, questioning whether it holds for a broader spectrum of GNNs or only for a few instances. To answer this question, we study the stability of EdgeNet: a general GNN framework that unifies more than twenty solutions including the convolutional and attention-based classes, as well as graph isomorphism networks and hybrid architectures. We prove that all GNNs within the EdgeNet framework are stable to topological perturbations. By studying the effect of different EdgeNet categories on the stability, we show that GNNs with fewer degrees of freedom in their parameter space, linked to a lower representational capacity, are more stable. The key factor yielding this trade-off is the eigenvector misalignment between the EdgeNet parameter matrices and the graph shift operator. For example, graph convolutional neural networks that assign a single scalar per signal shift (hence, with a perfect alignment) are more stable than the more involved node or edge-varying counterparts. Extensive numerical results corroborate our theoretical findings and highlight the role of different architecture components in the trade-off. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

After the COVID-19 pandemic, broadband internet utilization is predicted to continue to grow and experience a significant increase. The pandemic has changed how people work, study, communicate, shop, and carry out many aspects of daily life. Research reported that since 2018, research on broadband internet has continued to increase until now. This quantitative study examines the impact of the four critical variables on the link between attitude, availability, pricing, and quality of service (QoS) on broadband internet customer satisfaction using the Structural Equation Model approach and the Partial Lease Square technique. Three hundred and sixty-one citizen respondents in DKI Jakarta Province were collected using the snowball sampling method facilitated by Google Forms. At the same time, the COVID-19 post-pandemic was still ongoing in Indonesia. Through rigorous statistical analysis, the results show that customer satisfaction with broadband internet services is influenced by all factors, from attitude towards broadband Internet, broadband Internet availability, broadband Internet price, and service quality. The implications of this research are significant for service providers. They provide actionable insights for developing effective strategies to improve customer satisfaction and increase broadband internet subscriptions.

Enhancing 3D Human Pose Estimation Amidst Severe Occlusion with Dual Transformer Fusion

In the field of 3D Human Pose Estimation from monocular videos, the presence of diverse occlusion types presents a formidable challenge. Prior research has made progress by harnessing spatial and temporal cues to infer 3D poses from 2D joint observations. This paper introduces a Dual Transformer Fusion (DTF) algorithm, a novel approach to obtain a holistic 3D pose estimation, even in the presence of severe occlusions. Confronting the issue of occlusion-induced missing joint data, we propose a temporal interpolation-based occlusion guidance mechanism. To enable precise 3D Human Pose Estimation, our approach leverages the innovative DTF architecture, which first generates a pair of intermediate views. Each intermediate-view undergoes spatial refinement through a self-refinement schema. Subsequently, these intermediate-views are fused to yield the final 3D human pose estimation. The entire system is end-to-end trainable. Through extensive experiments conducted on the Human3.6M and MPI-INF-3DHP datasets, our method’s performance is rigorously evaluated. Anomaly detection from medical images is badly needed for automated diagnosis. For example, medical images obtained with several modalities, such as magnetic resonance (MR) and confocal microscopy, need to be classified for anomaly detection. The MR images may contain tumors that need to be detected with anomaly detection techniques. In MR imaging, brain tumors are represented as areas composed of abnormal cells that need to be detected. On the other hand, confocal microscopy can be used for retinal imaging. Hence, there is a need to apply classification techniques for diagnosing diseases of the eye, such as Diabetic Retinopathy (DR), which leads to exudates in different regions of the retina. The detection of exudates is necessary for the diagnosis of DR. In this paper, two models are presented for the classification of MR and retinal images. Much research has been done in this area, but it did not achieve high accuracy of classification in an acceptable time. In addition, the previous models did not consider both types of image modalities considered in this paper. The suggested models are Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and Convolutional Long Short-Term Memory (Conv-LSTM). They are used to classify normal and abnormal cases of both brain tumor and DR diseases. The CNN model is composed of six convolutional layers and six max-pooling layers. A soft-max activation function takes the classification decision. The proposed Conv-LSTM model is composed of three stages: pre-processing, feature extraction, and classification. The deep learning model performance is better than those of traditional networks. The CNN gives an accuracy of 94.26% for DR classification and 95.8% for brain tumor classification, while the Conv-LSTM gives the maximum accuracy of 96.41% for DR classification and 97.4% for brain tumor classification. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2025.

We propose a digital twin agent that constructs elderly digital twins by digitally transforming daily life of the elderly. We developed the digital twin agent as an avatar run on a smartwatch. The digital twin agent provides cooperation support functions with the society to the elderly. Those support function histories will be integrated with the digital twin. The digital twin agent can also monitor indoor daily life activities using distributed small sensors inside home. Then, those monitoring results will be integrated with the same digital twin. We confirmed that the digital twin agent could provide cooperation support functions with the society through evaluation experiments in Nagasaki city in Japan. We also confirmed that the digital twin agent could construct the digital twin based on those support function histories and offer mental health support functions using the constructed digital twin. © 2022 IEEE.

Scaling Off-Policy Reinforcement Learning with Batch and Weight Normalization

Reinforcement learning has achieved significant milestones, but sample efficiency remains a bottleneck for real-world applications. Recently, CrossQ has demonstrated state-of-the-art sample efficiency with a low update-to-data (UTD) ratio of 1. In this work, we explore CrossQ’s scaling behavior with higher UTD ratios. We identify challenges in the training dynamics, which are emphasized by higher UTD ratios. To address these, we integrate weight normalization into the CrossQ framework, a solution that stabilizes training, has been shown to prevent potential loss of plasticity and keeps the effective learning rate constant. Our proposed approach reliably scales with increasing UTD ratios, achieving competitive performance across 25 challenging continuous control tasks on the DeepMind Control Suite and Myosuite benchmarks, notably the complex dog and humanoid environments. This work eliminates the need for drastic interventions, such as network resets, and offers a simple yet robust pathway for improving sample efficiency and scalability in model-free reinforcement learning. © 2025, CC BY.
