One of the challenges of multiagent decision making is that the behavior needed to maximize utility can depend on what other agents choose to do: sometimes there is no "right" answer in the absence of knowledge of how opponents will act. The Nash equilibrium is a sensible choice of behavior because it represents a mutual best response. But, even when there is a unique equilibrium, other players are under no obligation to take part in it. This observation has been forcefully illustrated in the behavioral economics community where repeated experiments have shown individuals playing Nash equilibria and performing badly as a result. In this paper, we show how to apply a tool from behavioral economics called the Cognitive Hierarchy (CH) to the design of agents in general sum games. We attack the recently introduced "Lemonade Game" and show how the results of an open competition are well explained by CH. We believe this game, and perhaps many other similar games, boils down to predicting how deeply other agents in the game will be reasoning. An agent that does not reason enough risks being exploited by its opponents, while an agent that reasons too much may not be able to interact productively with its opponents. We demonstrate these ideas by presenting empirical results using agents from the competition and idealizations arising from a CH analysis. As the number of online students has been growing significantly for the last couple of years, generic Web Information Retrieval methods have either maintained an emphasis on serving the general population, or have been lagging in integrating the power of adaptive semantics and personalization via knowledge discovery into real-life working E-learning applications. This paper is devoted to the implementation of an augmented ontologybased information retrieval system with external open-source resources from MIT OpenCourseWare1 that uses Protégé2 to design and build the structure of HyperManyMedia ontology as means of retrieving documents in two languages, English and Spanish. In addition, this paper deals with clustering the augmented documents, the outcome of the Clustering Analysis is added to the domain ontology as additional leaves under the "SubSubSubconcept = lecture". From each cluster, we extract the Topn keywords (descriptive terms), then we modify the ontology accordingly by adding the cluster's terms as semantic terms under the "SubSubSubconcept = lecture" to which these documents belong. This research is implemented and evaluated on a real platform HyperManyMedia3 at Western Kentucky University. © 2010 IEEE.

This paper tackles the problem of a user who is capable of reading or using documents written in a specific language, but who is not fluent enough in this specific language to use the right query terms to find the document. The design of Cross-Language Information Retrieval systems started since 1969 by Gerard Salton who enhanced his SMART system to retrieve documents in multiple languages, English and Spanish;however, the translation process is still considered to be a challenging problem. This paper is devoted to the evaluation of a Cross-Language search engine that uses Natural Language Processing techniques as a means of improving the search process of documents provided by two languages, English and Spanish. The research is implemented and evaluated on a real platform HyperManyMedia1 at Western Kentucky University. The implementation of the Cross-Language search engine follows a synergistic approach between (1) A Thesaurus-based Approach and (2) A Corpus-based Approach. In the case of the Thesaurus-based Approach, we use a simple bilingual listing of terms, phrases, concepts, and subconcepts where the hierarchical structure of the ontology is used to define the relationship between concepts/subconcepts. Also, we use a specific terminology that captures the domain of E-learning;those terms are associated with college name, course name, and lecture name which is presented in two languages. In the case of the Corpus-based Approach, we use the Term Vector Translation approach;the goal is to find statistical information about term usage between the two languages using techniques which map sets of tfidf term weights from English to Spanish and vice-versa. © 2010 IEEE.

SimRank is a well known algorithm which conducts link analysis to measure similarity between each pair of nodes (nodepair). But it suffers from high computational cost, limiting its usage in large-scale datasets. Moreover, Links between nodes are changing over time. It may be desirable to quickly approximate the similarity score between certain nodepair without performing a large-scale computation on the entire graph. In our approach we propose a method to efficiently estimate the similarity score using only a small subgraph of the entire graph. We call this novel algorithm "Local-SimRank". The experimental results conducted on real datasets and synthetic dataset show that our algorithm efficiently produces good approximations to the global SimRank scores. Meanwhile, we prove that the Local-SimRank score LS(a, b) is always less than original SimRank score S(a, b) mathematically. © 2010 IEEE.

Similarity estimation can be used in many applications such as recommender system, cluster analysis, information retrieval and link prediction. SimRank is a famous algorithm to measure objects' similarities based on link structure. We observe that if one node has no in-link, similarity score between this node and any of the others is always zero. Based on this observation, we propose a new algorithm, fast two-stage SimRank (F2S-SimRank), which can avoid storing unnecessary zeros and can accelerate the computation without accuracy loss. Under the circumstance of no accuracy loss, this algorithm uses less computation time and occupies less main memory. Experiments conducted on real and synthetic datasets demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of our F2S-SimRank. © 2010 Springer-Verlag.

Federated policy systems are required to support the complexity and organizational heterogeneity of the modern marketplace. The Community-based Policy Management System (CBPMS) is such a distributed policy management approach. It utilizes a tree-based capability authority model to partition and delegate federated capabilities. However CBPMS delegation chains have limitations such as: performance overheads due to distributed rule evaluation, threats from malformed or malicious federated principals and a lack of flexibility with respect to delegation chain reduction or capability authority re-partitioning. In this paper we introduce a trust management model for CBPMS that addresses all of these issues. A brief security analysis is presented and a telecommunications service management use case described. © 2010 IEEE.

Purpose: In the last decade, web services have become a major technology to implement loosely coupled business processes and perform application integration. Through the use of context, a new generation of web services, namely context-aware web services (CASs), is currently emerging as an important technology for building innovative context-aware applications. Unfortunately, CASs are still difficult to build. Issues like lack of context provisioning management approach and lack of generic approach for formalizing the development process need to be solved in the first place for easy and effective development of CASs. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the techniques on developing CASs. Design/methodology/approach: The paper focuses on introducing a model-driven platform, called ContextServ, and showcasing how to use this platform to rapidly develop a context-aware web application, Smart Adelaide Guide. ContextServ adopts a model-driven development (MDD) approach where a Unified Modeling Language (UML)-based modeling language - ContextUML - is used to model web services and its context-awareness features. Findings: The paper presents novel techniques for efficient and effective development of CASs using a MDD approach. The ContextServ platform is the only one that provides a comprehensive software toolset that supports graphical modeling and automatic model transformation of CASs. Practical implications: The proposed approach has been validated in practice by developing various CASs. The experimental study demonstrates the efficiency and effectiveness of the approach. Originality/value: The paper presents a novel platform called ContextServ, which offers a set of visual editing and automation tools for easy and fast generating and deploying CASs. © Emerald Group Publishing Limited.

Traffic congestion is a very serious problem in large cities. With the number of vehicles increasing rapidly, especially in cities whose economy is booming, the situation is getting even worse. In this paper, by leveraging the techniques of Vehicular Ad hoc Networks (VANETs) we present a dynamic navigation protocol called VAN for individual vehicles to find the shortest-time paths toward their given destinations. Specifically, a vehicle initiates a number of queries, which are routed by VANETs along different paths toward its destination. During query forwarding, the real-time road traffic information in each road segment is aggregated from multiple participating vehicles and returned to the source after the query reaches the destination. This information enables the source to calculate the shortest-time path. We also propose two forwarding optimization methods to reduce communication costs and an error handling mechanism to deal with abnormal circumstances. To evaluate its performance, we use the real traffic data of Beijing, including 2,308 road segments at two different times. Our simulation results demonstrate that our protocol, on average, could save around 30% driving time, compared to traveling along the shortest distance paths. ©2010 IEEE.

This paper presents the usage of the Semantic Digital Library platform, JeromeDL, as knowledge representation of an open-source learning objects repository at Western Kentucky University. The synergistic approach between the Semantic Digital Library and E-learning provides users (online learners) with enhanced information discovery features for learning objects (lectures). In addition, the platform serves as an environment to (a) author learning objects;(b) classify each learning object using proper taxonomy among different libraries, such as DMOZ, ACM, UDC, LOC, or DDC;(c) bookmark sharing and collaborative filtering;and (d) providing natural language query templates. In this study, we discuss our findings with respect to the usability of the platform by online users. This platform is currently running at WKU as a pilot project and has been experimented with online users.
