We propose algorithms for efficiently maintaining a constant-approximate minimum connected dominating set (MCDS) of a geometric graph under node insertions and deletions, and under node mobility. Assuming that two nodes are adjacent in the graph if and only if they are within a fixed geometric distance, we show that an O(1)-approximate MCDS of a graph in Rd with n nodes can be maintained in O(log2dn) time per node insertion or deletion. We also show that Ω(n) time per operation is necessary to maintain exact MCDS. This lower bound holds even for d=1, even for randomized algorithms, and even when running time is amortized over a sequence of insertions/deletions, or over continuous motion. The crucial fact is that a single operation may affect the entire exact solution, while an approximate solution is affected only in a small neighborhood of the node that was inserted or deleted. In the approximate case, we show how to compute these local changes by a few range searching queries and a few bichromatic closest pair queries. © 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

XML datasets may contain slight variations of data values, especially for numerical values caused by data measurement, data precision, heterogeneous data sources, etc. But human beings may want functional dependencies (FD) can be satisfied in these data items as they only contain very slight variations for the same data item. Traditional definitions of FD in relational databases and XML can not deal with such situation as they are too "precise" or "strict". This paper proposes a new concept of XML FD based on constraint-tree model to deal with such difficult situation. The applications of this new FD are also discussed in the environments of removing data redundancies and integrating different data sources. © 2013 Binary Information Press.

Technology supported collaborative learning settings facilitate long lasting learning of students in computer and internet supported situations with collaborative workings among them. The aim of this study is to find out whether technology supported collaborative learning settings affect the behaviour of students towards the discipline of Mathematics or not. Being a single-group empirical research, pre-testing and post testing have been used in this study. Seventeen students studying in seventh year in Şehit Hüseyin Ruso Secondary School, a state school connected to Education Ministry in North Cyprus, participated in this study. Students were taught algebraic expression in detail at the beginning of this academic year. Then dividing the students in groups of four or five, they were given projects related to the given topic. In the projects the students were needed to search their projects’ topic with their friends in their group, discuss and then prepare a presentation cooperatively. The presentations of the students were shared and discussed in the setting of Wikispaces by themselves. According the pre-testing and post tetsing results, it is pointed out that technology supported Mathematics education has a positive effect on students.

This paper presents a platform named vCourse based on the virtualization technology. vCourse supports multiple operation systems and multiple courses online. Teachers can create a course template and deploy it as many virtual machines. Students can do their exercises on those virtual machines and interact with others and the teacher. The features, structure and key mechanisms of vCourse are discussed in this paper. Two experiments are designed to evaluate the performance of vCourse. According to the test results, vCourse can run the typical software smoothly and is not very sensitive on the virtual machine numbers.

Over the past one decade, due to its simplicity and flexibility, Extensible Markup Language (XML) is rapidly gaining in popularity as a universal data format for data exchange and integration on the web. In this paper, we present a novel framework to evaluate a variety of XPath queries in a very user-friendly manner. We developed a prototype system named VXPath, which is a visual XPath query evaluator that allows the user to evaluate an XPath query by clicking the nodes in an expanding tree instead of typing the whole XPath query by hand. Our system supports various XPath axes, including child, descendant, self, parent, ancestor, following-sibling, precedingsibling, predicate and so on. In order to handle XML documents in very large size, instead of loading the whole XML document into memory, we extracted a concise data synopsis termed structural summary from the original XML document to avoid the loading overhead for large XML document. We evaluated our system over the data from XMark and DBLP and our system can handle large XML documents up to gigabytes. © 2013 IEEE.

This poster paper presents a high-level description of the Metalogue project that is developing a multi-modal dialogue system that is able to implement interactive behaviors that seem natural to users and is flexible enough to exploit the full potential of multimodal interaction. We provide an outline of the initial work undertaken to define a an open architecture for the integrated Metalogue system. This system includes components that are necessary for the implementation of the processing stages for a variety of application domains: initialization, training, information gathering, orchestration, multimodality, dialogue management, speech recognition, speech synthesis and user modelling.

As pervasive computing meets social networks, there is a fast growing research field called pervasive social computing. Applications in this area exploit the richness of information arising out of people using sensorequipped pervasive devices in their everyday life combined with intense use of different social networking *** call this set of information pervasive social *** provide a taxonomy to classify pervasive social context along the dimensions space, time, people, and information source (STiPI) as well as commenting on the type and reason for creating such context. A survey of recent research shows the applicability and usefulness of the taxonomy in classifying and assessing applications and systems in the area of pervasive social computing. Finally, we present some research challenges in this area and illustrate how they affect the systems being surveyed. © 2013 ACM.
