Over the past one decade, due to its simplicity and flexibility, Extensible Markup Language (XML) is rapidly gaining in popularity as a universal data format for data exchange and integration on the web. In this paper, we present a novel framework to evaluate a variety of XPath queries in a very user-friendly manner. We developed a prototype system named VXPath, which is a visual XPath query evaluator that allows the user to evaluate an XPath query by clicking the nodes in an expanding tree instead of typing the whole XPath query by hand. Our system supports various XPath axes, including child, descendant, self, parent, ancestor, following-sibling, preceding-sibling, predicate and so on. In order to handle XML documents in very large size, instead of loading the whole XML document into memory, we extracted a concise data synopsis termed structural summary from the original XML document to avoid the loading overhead for large XML document. We evaluated our system over the data from XMark and DBLP and our system can handle large XML documents up to gigabytes.

Interactive-engagement (IE) techniques consistently enhance conceptual learning gains relative to traditional-lecture courses, but attitudinal gains typically emerge only in small, inquiry-based curricula. The current study evaluated whether a “scalable IE” curriculum—a curriculum used in a large course (∼130 students per section) and likely adoptable by a wide range of physics departments—could produce significant attitudinal benefits relative to a traditional-lecture curriculum. This study included data across three years, 10 instructors, over 30 sections, and over 1100 students, and our analytic strategy allowed us to isolate the effects that were due to the curriculum itself rather than other potential factors such as instructor differences or preexisting differences among students. Results revealed that our Active-Physics curriculum, which is based on Moore’s Six Ideas That Shaped Physics, produced significant attitudinal and conceptual-learning benefits relative to our traditional-lecture physics curriculum. Further, the Active-Physics curriculum, for the most part, benefitted males and females equally, and relative to the Fall semester alone, the benefits of Active Physics became more robust when viewed across the entire two-semester sequence of introductory physics. Our data highlight that some (though not all) of the attitudinal benefits of small, inquiry-based courses may be achievable in larger course with scalable IE curricula that can potentially reach a large proportion of introductory physics students.

To cluster textual sequence types (discourse types/modes) in French texts, K-means algorithm with high-dimensional embeddings and fuzzy clustering algorithm were applied on clauses whose POS (part-ofspeech) n-gram profiles were previously extracted. Uni-, bi-And trigrams were used on four 19th century French short stories by Maupassant. For high-dimensional embeddings, power transformations on the chisquared distances between clauses were explored. Preliminary results show that highdimensional embeddings improve the quality of clustering, contrasting the use of biand trigrams whose performance is disappointing, possibly because of feature space sparsity. © 2012 Association for Computational Linguistics.

Model checking of timed automata is a widely used technique. But in order to take advantage of modern hardware, the algorithms need to be parallelized. We present a multi-core reachability algorithm for the more general class of well-structured transition systems, and an implementation for timed automata. Our implementation extends the opaal tool to generate a timed automaton successor generator in c++, that is efficient enough to compete with the uppaal model checker, and can be used by the discrete model checker LTSmin, whose parallel reachability algorithms are now extended to handle subsumption of semi-symbolic states. The reuse of efficient lockless data structures guarantees high scalability and efficient memory use. With experiments we show that opaal+LTSmin can outperform the current state-of-the-art, uppaal. The added parallelism is shown to reduce verification times from minutes to mere seconds with speedups of up to 40 on a 48-core machine. Finally, strict BFS and (surprisingly) parallel DFS search order are shown to reduce the state count, and improve speedups. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

The performance of InGaN blue light-emitting diodes（LEDs） with different kinds of electron-blocking layers is investigated *** compare the simulated emission spectra,electron and hole concentrations,energy band diagrams,electrostatic fields,and internal quantum efficiencies of the *** LED using AlGaN with gradually increasing Al content from 0% to 20% as the electron-blocking layer（EBL） has a strong spectrum intensity,mitigates efficiency droop,and possesses higher output power compared with the LEDs with the other three types of *** advantages could be because of the lower electron leakage current and more effective hole *** optical performance of the specifically designed LED is also improved in the case of large injection current.

With the growing use of the Web in university education, increasingly student learning activity is happening outside of the classroom. Consequently it is becoming more and more difficult for teachers to know how their students are going about the learning process. This is of particular concern for the teaching of programming as students typically find this task hard and programming courses often experience high dropout rates. The aim of our research was to explore the study habits of introductory programming students to discover what motivates them to engage in particular activities and use particular resources, and what activities and resources they find valuable for their learning. Twelve introductory programming students were interviewed using a semi-structured interview protocol. From our study we gained a holistic understanding of the students' journeys in learning programming during their introductory programming course. A key finding was that the classroom experience is no longer central to students' learning. Many students had abandoned textbooks and other teacher-provided resources and are heavily reliant on the internet as source of help and of learning.

A scale-space algorithm for estimating the local curvature of lines (edges or isolines) is presented. Two variants of edge curvature estimation based on differential invariants are suggested and compared. The first variant uses the edge curvature formula derived in the paper and the second is based on image preprocessing, which allows one to use the isoline curvature formula for edge curvature estimation. An analysis of scale selection needed to reach a desired accuracy is presented. Also, noise influence analysis has been performed. The application of curvature estimation to detection of straight lines and circles is suggested and implemented. Curvature information usage in parametric curve detection speeds up search algorithms and makes the results more stable. © 2012 Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

We present a new abstraction technique for the exploration of graph transformation systems with infinite state spaces. This technique is based on patterns, simple graphs describing structures of interest that should be preserved by the abstraction. Patterns are collected into pattern graphs, layered graphs that capture the hierarchical composition of smaller patterns into larger ones. Pattern graphs are then abstracted to a finite universe of pattern shapes by collapsing equivalent patterns. This paper shows how the application of production rules can be lifted to pattern shapes, resulting in an over-approximation of the original system behaviour and thus enabling verification on the abstract level. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

This paper gives a novel delay-dependent admissibility condition of discrete-time singular systems with time-varying delays. For convenience, the time-varying delay is assumed to be the sum of delay lower bound and the integral multiples of a constant delay. Specially, if the constant delay is of unit length, the delay is an interval-like time-varying delay. The proposed admissibility condition is presented and expressed in terms of linear matrix inequality (LMI) by Lyapunov approach. Generally, the uncertainty of time-varying delay would lead to conservatism. In this paper, this critical issue is tackled by accurately estimating the time-varying delay. Consequently, the proposed admissibility condition is less conservative than the existing results, which is demonstrated by a numerical example.
