Chinese Keyword Search by Indexing in Relational Databases

In this paper, we propose a new method based on index to realize IR-style Chinese keyword search with ranking strategies in relational databases. This method creates an index by using the related information of tuple words and presents a ranking strategy in terms of the nature of Chinese words. For a Chinese keyword query, the index is used to match query search words and the tuple words in index quickly, and to compute similarities between the query and tuples by the ranking strategy, and then the set of identifiers of candidate tuples is generated. Thus, we retrieve top-N results of the query using SQL selection statements and output the ranked answers according to the similarities. The experimental results show that our method is efficient and effective.

In many database applications, ranking queries may reference both text and numeric attributes, where the ranking functions are based on both semantic distances/similarities for text attributes and numeric distances for numeric attributes. In this paper, we propose a new method for evaluating such type of ranking queries over a relational database. By statistics and training, this method builds a mechanism that combines the semantic and numeric distances, and the mechanism can be used to balance the effects of text attributes and numeric attributes on matching a given query and tuples in database search. The basic idea of the method is to create an index based on WordNet to expand the tuple words semantically for text attributes and on the information of numeric attributes. The candidate results for a query are retrieved by the index and a simple SQL selection statement, and then top-N answers are obtained. The results of extensive experiments indicate that the performance of this new strategy is efficient and effective.

With the popularity of Extensible Markup Language (XML) as the new standard of data exchange on the web, a large number of data sources are represented or encoded in XML format. Therefore, querying and searching XML data on the web has attracted much attention in the database literature. In this research work, we developed a prototype software system named VXPath to facilitate the efficient evaluation of XPath queries over XML data. VXPath is a visual XPath query evaluator that allows the user to evaluate an XPath query by clicking the nodes in an expanding tree instead of typing the whole XPath query by hand. Our system supports most common XPath axes, such as child, descendant, predicate and so on. In order to handle XML documents in very large size, instead of loading the whole XML document into memory, we extracted a concise data synopsis termed structural summary from the original XML document to avoid the loading overhead for large XML document. We evaluated our system over the data from XMark and DBLP and our system can handle large XML documents up to gigabytes.

The paper describes a design specification process for the development of novel and intelligent surgical robots. Nowadays, surgical robots are usually controlled by the surgeons manually by using teleoperation. The possibility to carry out simple surgical actions automatically has been the subject of academical research, but very few real-world applications exist. The main objective of this research is to address realistic case studies and develop systems and methods to provide surgeons with autonomous robotic assistants, performing basic surgical actions by combining sensing, dexterity and cognitive capabilities. This goal can only be achieved by means of a formal and rigorous assesment of surgical requirements, so that they can be analysed and translated into behavioral specifications for an autonomous robotic system. Therefore, the paper describes the application of Requirements Engineering to surgical knowledge formalization and propose a methodology for the transformation of requirements into formal models of robotic tasks.

The landscape of contemporary engineering education is ever changing, adapting and evolving. We are indeed living in interesting and exciting times. At the focal point of these times is the concept of active learning methods. This poster session and paper describes a novel approach to improving student learning using active learning finite element learning modules. This poster session summarizes the improved student learning over the past six years at nine engineering schools and colleges. These active learning finite element modules were originally developed using MSC Nastran, followed by development efforts in SolidWorks® Simulation, ANSOFT, ANSYS©, and other commercial FEA software packages. Researchers, with National science Foundation support, have created over twenty-eight active finite element learning modules which continue to improve student understanding of difficult engineering concepts across engineering disciplines. Finite element theory and application has often been the focus of graduate-level courses in engineering programs;however, industry needs B.S. engineering graduates to have skills in applying this essential analysis and design technique. We have used the Kolb Learning Cycle as a foundation element to improve student learning of difficult engineering concepts, along with gaining essential knowledge of finite element analysis and design content knowledge. We discuss the implementation, improved student knowledge, impact, and assessment across demographics, learning styles and personality preference types. These learning modules are incorporated into undergraduate machine design, mechanical vibrations, heat transfer, bioelectrical engineering, electromagnetic field analysis, structural fatigue analysis, computational fluid dynamics, rocket design, chip formation during manufacturing, and large scale deformation in machining. Many technology and design-based disciplines are facing increasing demands to prepare students to perform effectively within computational and simulation environments. Further, students' spatial abilities are an important prerequisite to technological literacy within virtual environments. In this paper, we explore the challenges and opportunities teaching a large group of first-year, interdisciplinary students to apply spatial thinking skills by undertaking a team-based, design project using an industrial-strength computational design environment (SolidWorks). We describe key instructional principles and techniques used to minimize the complexity of this computational tool, thus enabling students to focus on the tasks and reasoning requirements of the design project. While encouraged by the high degree of students' motivation for building functioning animated mechanical toys (AMTs), students frequently reported being “lost” in SolidWorks (SW) during the modeling phases of the project. Our techniques for scaffolding learning activities have continued to evolve to minimize the challenges faced by novice users of SW and to better support them in developing their spatial thinking skills. We also present our experiences, lessons learned, and ideas for improving the design of the project, and learning activities, such as worked examples of an AMT model, to further reduce the cognitive load and to enable students to focus on visual-spatial reasoning rather than on the tacit skills associated with using SolidWorks.

3D virtual reality, including the current generation of multi-user virtual worlds, has had a long history of use in education and training, and it experienced a surge of renewed interest with the advent of Second Life in 2003. What followed shortly after were several years marked by considerable hype around the use of virtual worlds for teaching, learning and research in higher education. For the moment, uptake of the technology seems to have plateaued, with academics either maintaining the status quo and continuing to use virtual worlds as they have previously done or choosing to opt out altogether. This paper presents a brief review of the use of virtual worlds in the Australian and New Zealand higher education sector in the past and reports on its use in the sector at the present time, based on input from members of the Australian and New Zealand Virtual Worlds Working Group. It then adopts a forward-looking perspective amid the current climate of uncertainty, musing on future directions and offering suggestions for potential new applications in light of recent technological developments and innovations in the area. © 2013 Sue Gregory.

A longitudinal analysis of data breaches

Purpose The purpose of this research is to provide companies and consumers with information about the potential connections between data breach types and institutions. This study also aims to add to the body of knowledge about data breaches. Design/methodology/approach This study analyzes a chronology of five years of data breaches. The data were classified and analyzed by breach and institution type, record size, and state. Multiple statistical tests were performed. Findings Breach types stolen and exposed are statistically more likely to occur. Educational institutions are more likely to have a breach and it is more probable that educational breaches will be of type hacker or exposed. The proportion of insider incidents is smaller than the other breach types. The number of records breached is independent of institution and breach type. Research limitations/implications Only those breaches with a specified number of records are included. The information used may have been updated after our analysis, usually a change in the number of records identified. Practical implications Additional knowledge about characteristics of data breaches and the relationship between breach types and institution types will enable both businesses and consumers to be more effective in protecting sensitive information. Businesses will be able to create security budgets based on risk factors and consumers will be more aware of the risks of providing sensitive information. Originality/value This study provides a longitudinal analysis covering five years of data breaches and analyzes the relationship between five breach types and six types of institutions. © 2011 Emerald Group Publishing Limited. The coordination modelling language Paradigm addresses collaboration between components in terms of dynamic constraints. Within a Paradigm model, component dynamics are consistently specified at various levels of abstraction. The operational semantics of Paradigm is given. For a large, general subclass of Paradigm models a translation into process algebra is provided. Once expressed in process algebra, relying on a correctness result, Paradigm models are amenable to process algebraic reasoning and to verification via the mCRL2 toolset. Controlled external chemomechanical stimuli have been shown to influence cellular and tissue regeneration/degeneration, especially with regards to distinct disease sequelae or health maintenance. Recently, a unique three-dimensional stress state was mathematically derived to describe the experimental stresses applied to isolated living cells suspended in an optohydrodynamic trap (optical tweezers combined with microfluidics). These formulae were previously developed in two and three dimensions from the fundamental equations describing creeping flows past a suspended sphere. The objective of the current study is to determine the full-field cellular strain response due to the applied three-dimensional stress environment through a multiphysics computational simulation. In this investigation, the multiscale cytoskeletal structures are modeled as homogeneous, isotropic, and linearly elastic. The resulting computational biophysics can be directly compared with experimental strain measurements, other modeling interpretations of cellular mechanics including the liquid drop theory, and biokinetic models of biomolecule dynamics. The described multiphysics computational framework will facilitate more realistic cytoskeletal model interpretations, whose intracellular structures can be distinctly defined, including the cellular membrane substructures, nucleus, and organelles. © 2012 Sean S.
