This paper presents a preliminary study towards the applications of IEC 61499 Function Block standard in distributed motion control systems, where synchronization is of crucial importance. In particular, an investigation on the possibilities of applying event-driven function blocks in the time-based motion control system has been performed on the SIDEL SL90 packaging machine's control system. To achieve the required high-precision time synchronization and to provide the reference time, the IEEE 1588 Precision Time Protocol has been implemented in this work as the essential part of the packaging control system. Project Based Learning (PjBL) has become a widely used method of teaching in technical subjects. In the last ten years our experiences with PjPL reveal a very complex picture. On the one hand PPL does have benefits, on the other hand the handling of numerous projects is complex and the evaluation of the results difficult to standardize. teaching with projects quite often turned out to be chaotic in the perception of students. Remarks, based on the results of projects turned out to be highly depended on the subjective point of view of the teacher. Most teachers agree that teaching with PjPL has numerous advantages especially in the field of computerscience. Students are able to apply their technical knowledge, acquire practical skills in programming, get involved into team processes and understand in some cases even so called soft factors in project management. However IT projects in teaching environments behave very oddly when one tries apply standardized frameworks onto them. After more than ten years of routinely use of PjPL in computerscience the authors try to identify critical success factors for such projects. Four main reasons could be identified: 1. Students are no experienced project managers and frequently run into problems in early phases of the projects. 2. The motivation of students to actually finish the project varies between low and extremely high values. 3. Interactions of teachers with students, dependent on factors like specific experience of a given teacher with a specific project or students who are shy to ask seemingly stupid questions very early. 4. Wireless mesh networks (WMNs) have emerged as a flexible and low-cost network infrastructure, where heterogeneous mesh routers managed by different users collaborate to extend network coverage. Several routing protocols have been proposed to improve the packet delivery rate based on enhanced metrics that capture the wireless link quality. However, these metrics do not take into account that some participants can exhibit selfish behavior by selectively dropping packets sent by other mesh routers in order to prioritize their own traffic and increase their network utilization. This paper proposes a novel routing metric to cope with the problem of selfish behavior (i.e., packet dropping) of mesh routers in a WMN. Our solution combines, in a cross-layer fashion, routing-layer observations of forwarding behavior with MAC-layer measurements of wireless link quality to select the most reliable and high-performance path. We integrated the proposed metric with a well-known routing protocol for wireless mesh networks, OLSR, and evaluated it using the NS2 simulator. The results show that our cross-layer metric accurately captures the path reliability, even when a high percentage of network nodes misbehave, thus considerably increasing the WMN performance.

We study the traffic dynamics in complex networks where each link is assigned a limited and identical bandwidth. Although the first-in–first-out (FIFO) queuing rule is widely applied in the routing protocol of information packets, here we argue that if we drop this rule, the overall throughput of the network can be remarkably enhanced. We propose some efficient routing strategies that do not strictly obey the FIFO rule. Compared to the routine shortest-path strategy, throughput for both Barabási-Albert (BA) networks and the Internet can be improved by a factor of more than five. We calculate the theoretical limitation of the throughput. In BA networks, our proposed strategy can achieve 88% of the theoretical optimum, yet for the Internet, it is about 12%, implying that we still have a huge space to further improve the routing strategy for the Internet. Finally, we discuss possibly promising ways to design more efficient routing strategies for the Internet.

Due to the shortcoming of linear normalization for sensitivity in electrical tomography system, nonlinear formulas are derived about electrical resistance tomography (ERT), capacitance tomography (ECT) and electromagnetic tomography (EMT). Those formulas are deduced according to the characteristics of analytical solution and system structure. The role of normalization in data processing is introduced. Logarithmic normalization formula is summarized for ERT. In ECT, parallel model and serial model are introduced, and nonlinear formulas are described depending on real distribution in object field. Mainly, special normalization formula is deduced.
