Using drawing as a tool for investigating undergraduate conceptions of Earth scientists

The purpose of this study was to investigate undergraduate students’ conceptions of Earth scientists, using drawing as a tool, during introductory Earth science courses. We explored two research questions: 1) What student conceptions are evident in undergraduate students’ drawings of Earth scientists? and 2) How do undergraduate students’ conceptions of Earth scientists—as evidenced in their drawings—change as a result of completing an introductory Earth science course? We collected pre- and post-drawings of Earth scientists from 94 students in six introductory Earth science courses at two universities and coded the 188 drawings across 39 indicators. We used Chi Square Goodness of Fit Tests to identify significant shifts between pre- and post-drawings and effect sizes with Cohen’s W. Twelve indicators demonstrated higher frequencies and eleven indicators showed significant change (with small, medium, and large effects) between the pre- to post-drawings collected at the beginning and end of each course. The results suggest that unsophisticated conceptions exist, especially at the beginning of an introductory Earth science course. Yet overall, findings indicate that in the courses from which we drew our data, most students had an informed view of Earth science as a field and the work of Earth scientists. Additionally, student ideas about Earth scientists primarily investigating rocks, minerals, and soil, expanded to include other areas of investigation such as the atmosphere and bodies of water. We propose that drawings can serve as an additional valuable tool in an instructor’s toolbox for understanding students’ conceptions of Earth scientists, which has important implications for instruction and curriculum design. © 2023 National Association of Geoscience Teachers.

Text classification or categorization is the procedure of automatically tagging a textual document with most related labels or *** the number of labels is limited to one,the task becomes single-label text *** Arabic texts include unstructured information also like English texts,and that is understandable for machine learning(ML)techniques,the text is changed and demonstrated by numerical *** recent times,the dominant method for natural language processing(NLP)tasks is recurrent neural network(RNN),in general,long short termmemory(LSTM)and convolutional neural network(CNN).Deep learning(DL)models are currently presented for deriving a massive amount of text deep features to an optimum performance from distinct domains such as text detection,medical image analysis,and so *** paper introduces aModified Dragonfly Optimization with Extreme Learning Machine for Text Representation and Recognition(MDFO-EMTRR)model *** presentedMDFO-EMTRR technique mainly concentrates on the recognition and classification of the Arabic *** achieve this,theMDFO-EMTRRtechnique encompasses data pre-processing to transform the input data into compatible ***,the ELM model is utilized for the representation and recognition of the Arabic *** last,the MDFO algorithm was exploited for optimal tuning of the parameters related to the ELM method and thereby accomplish enhanced classifier *** experimental result analysis of the MDFO-EMTRR system was performed on benchmark datasets and attained maximum accuracy of 99.74%.

As the main parent and guardian, mothers are often concerned with the study performance of their *** specifically, most mothers are eager to know the concrete examination scores of their children. However,with the continuous progress of modern education systems, most schools or teachers have now been forbidden to release sensitive student examination scores to the public due to privacy concerns, which has made it infeasible for mothers to know the real study level or examination performance of their children. Therefore, a conflict has come to exist between teachers and mothers, which harms the general growing up of students in their study. In view of this challenge, we propose a Privacy-aware Examination Results Ranking(PERR) method to attempt at balancing teachers’ privacy disclosure concerns and the mothers’ concerns over their children’s examination *** drawing on a relevant case study, we prove the effectiveness of the proposed PERR method in evaluating and ranking students according to their examination scores while at the same time securing sensitive student information.

Studies on civilian costs of cyberwarfare operations are crucial in understanding how to protect the population in large-scale cyberattacks conducted by state actors. In this preliminary study, we conduct interviews (N=5) focusing on the harms experienced by Ukrainian civilians due to Russian cyberwarfare operations since the start of the full-scale invasion in 2022 as well as mitigation measures for protection of the civil society. The findings include harms such as lack of information, lack of access to essential services, physical harms, anxiety and lack of trust in the government. The study shows that cyberwarfare operations have the potential of causing severe harm to civilians and that there is a need for future studies to be conducted and adopted by institutions in order to develop measures to mitigate, not only in Ukraine but in any countries in risk of such attacks. © 2025 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

This paper presents the design, implementation and evaluation of a community-based, reactive ride-sharing service that promotes carbon-neutral management of city commutes using autonomous vehicles. The problem is formulated as a variant of the classical Dynamic Vehicle Routing problem with Time Windows, considering both dynamic resources and requests over a simulated time horizon. A solution approach is provided, based on an algorithm following a reactive-based simulation on top of a greedy decision-making process. A parameterised instance generator is developed to align existing benchmarks (i.e. Google HashCode) and public datasets (i.e. NYC taxis) to the proposed problem formulation and to enable testing of the solution under various configurations. The ride-sharing service is proven to scale well, when applied to very large instances, it provides fast and competitive results, both in terms of trip petitions satisfied and overall distance traversed. The article considers the practical experience of introducing interactive adaptive learning in the e-learning environment. The basis of the learning environment is the LCM Moodle learning resource management system. One of the ways to individualize and personalize the learning process is to attract interactive and adaptive technologies for teaching students. The LCM Moodle's interactive module of activity 'Lesson'' is a series of HTML pages linked by transitions. The main difference between 'Lesson'' and other LCM Moodle modules is that there are elements of adaptability. Using this tool, each student's choice can be accompanied by appropriate comments from the teacher and the ability to go to different pages of the course depending on the correctness/incorrectness and completeness of the answers. With such planning, 'Lesson'' can provide theoretical material and control tasks to check its mastery for each student automatically, without additional action by the teacher. As a result of completing the tasks, the corresponding score appears in the student's register of marks. In general, this module of activity is similar to a classroom lesson, when the teacher, presenting new material, from time to time interviews students in order to identify the level of its mastery. © 2023 IEEE.

We explore a continuous aggregated dynamic model for developing two gas fields. The new borehole commissioning rates are the control parameters. Changes in the average flow rate of producing boreholes and current natural gas production are proportional. It is necessary to solve the problem of maximizing discounted accumulated income for two gas fields. We analyze the optimal control problem with an unrestricted right end and a fixed time. The Pontryagin maximum principle is a main tool for solving the problem. The special optimal control mode is of particular interest. We highlight the critical aspects of all possible optimal controls.
