The transformation from platform independent models to platform specific models is a key technology in OMG's MDA. The mapping relations between different models are the foundation and basis for the transformation. By abstractly analyzing the characteristic of syntax and semantics of modeling languages, a semantic-features-calculation based model mapping approach for the development of web information systems was proposed. To using this approach, abstract target semantic model should be constructed firstly. Then, based on the idea of elements in source semantic domain being reconstructed in the target semantic domain, mapping relations from source model to target model are made via abstract target semantic model. This approach may not only to be a theoretical guidance for model transformation, but also can be a measurement for validating the mapping rules between models at different abstract levels. JavaServer Faces assisted with Enterprise JavaBeans was used as a target platform to help interpreting the process of using this approach. © 2007 IEEE.

The Microelectronics WebLab at MIT allows students to do actual (not simulated) laboratory research on state-of-the art equipment through the Internet. This study assesses the use of WebLab in a junior-level course on microelectronic devices and circuits in 2004-05 and 2005-06. In quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews, students and faculty reported that WebLab was effective as an instrument of learning, and grew more so with refinements of the program. WebLab allowed undergraduates to learn at their own pace and on their own schedules. It enabled them to use different processes of learning (intuitive, visual, abstract), and it gave them an opportunity to link individual and collaborative effort in creative combinations. Online laboratories on this model have broad applications in the experimental sciences and in other research-oriented disciplines. © 2007 Springer science+Business Media, LLC.

This paper presents a new multi-objective evolutionary algorithm (MOEA) which adopts a radial basis function (RBF) approach in order to reduce the number of fitness function evaluations performed to reach the Pareto front. The specific method adopted is derived from a comparative study conducted among several RBFs. In all cases, the NSGA-II (which is an approach representative of the state-of-the-art in the area) is adopted as our search engine with which the RBFs are hybridized. The resulting algorithm can produce very reasonable approximations of the true Pareto front with a very low number of evaluations, but is not able to spread solutions in an appropriate manner. This led us to introduce a second stage to the algorithm in which it is hybridized with rough sets theory in order to improve the spread of solutions. Rough sets, in this case, act as a local search approach which is able to generate solutions in the neighborhood of the few nondominated solutions previously generated. We show that our proposed hybrid approach only requires 2,000 fitness function evaluations in order to solve test problems with up to 30 decision variables. This is a very low value when compared with today's standards reported in the specialized literature.

Prisoner’s Dilemma is a common game theory scenario in which two players must choose between acting cooperatively or out of pure self-interest. What a player decides affects not only his own outcome but also that of the other player. Friend or Foe, a TV game show that has appeared on the cable Game Show Network (GSN), places pairs of contestants in a situation similar to Prisoner’s Dilemma. After working together to accumulate money into a “trust fund,” the two teammates divide their winnings, or not, based on their individual decisions to be a Friend to their teammate or a Foe. We have collected data on the contestants and their behavior from 36 episodes of the show. In this paper we describe how the game show is played, what game theory says about the way that the contestants should act, and how they actually did act on the 36 episodes. We also present an example of how Friend or Foe can be used in a classroom setting not only to introduce game theory but also to review previous course material. © 2007 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

Diversity preservation has already been established as an important concern for evolutionary computation. Clustering techniques were, among others, successfully applied to this purpose. Another important aspect of the research on evolutionary computation is related to linkage learning - the detection of the problem structure avoiding disruption of building blocks when new individuals are generated. This paper presents a novel approach which is a new estimation of distribution algorithm (EDA) where clustering plays two roles: diversity preservation and linkage learning. Initial empirical investigations illustrate the behavior of the algorithm when solving two benchmark optimization problems.

Diversity and Progression among Students Starting Social Work Qualifying Programmes in England between 1995 and 1998: A Quantitative Study

She is a Demographer with a background in statistics and computer science. She is experienced in quantitative research techniques and applied statistics methods in demography and population studies. She is particularly interested in demographic factors affecting social care workforce as well as international variations in handling the global demographic changes. She also has experience in marriage and family dynamics and relationships between cultural diversity and social care needs. Jo Moriarty is a Research Fellow at the Social Care Workforce Research Unit. She has undertaken a series of studies looking at community care services with a particular interest in services for older people with dementia and their carers and people from minority ethnic groups. Jill Manthorpe is Co-Director of SCWRU with a background in university social work and health professional training at pre- and post-qualifying levels. She has undertaken a range of research studies in areas of community care adult protection professional training and risk. She has published widely with recent books on social policy inquiries abuse and students’ mental health. Her particular interests are in social gerontology and she has undertaken a range of research into older people’s services for voluntary groups local providers and national bodies. Peter Huxley is a qualified social worker with practice experience in child and adult mental health settings. He also has management and Board-level experience in adult mental health and social care services. He is Professor of Social Work Head of the Section of Social Work and Social Care and Deputy Head of Department in the Health Services Research Department at the Institute of Psychiatry at Kings College and Director of SCWRU. He recently completed a national survey of the mental health social work workforce in England

There has been no large-scale study looking at the proportion of social work students in the UK who achieve the professional qualification, although there is some evidence that different groups experience different rates of progression. This article examines progression rates among students studying for the DipSW in England and analyses the factors that influence whether students achieve an award on time (defined as achieving an award without being referred, deferred, failing or withdrawing). The results show that male students, students from a black and minority ethnic group, and students with a self-reported disability have poorer progression rates. However, contrary to the picture in higher education as a whole, older students and students with previously lower levels of educational attainment do not have poorer progression rates. Social work education has important lessons to share with higher-education colleagues in terms of working with an increasingly diverse student group. However, work is needed to identify students at greater risk of non-progression than others and to develop more effective student support strategies.

The traditional approach to engineering mathematics education begins with one year of freshman calculus as a prerequisite to subsequent core engineering courses. However, the inability of incoming students to successfully advance through the traditional freshman calculus sequence is a primary cause of attrition in engineering programs across the country. As a result, this paper describes an NSF funded initiative at Wright State University to redefine the way in which engineering mathematics is taught, with the goal of increasing student retention, motivation and success in engineering. This paper provides an overview of the WSU model for engineering mathematics education, followed by an assessment of student performance, perception and retention through its initial implementation1-4. It also summarizes the scope of a recent NSF CCLI Phase 2 Expansion award, which involves a multiyear assessment at WSU, pilot adoption and assessment at two collaborating institutions, and a widespread dissemination of results. © American Society for Engineering Education, 2007.

iPAM is a dual robotic system currently being developed in the UK under a NHS New and Emerging Applications of Technologies (NEAT) grant. The aim of the system is to provide assistive upper-limb therapeutic excercise for post-stroke rehabilitation. iPAM features two co-ordinated, pneumatically-actuated robotic arms which attach to the patient's forearm and upper-arm to provide assistance, mimicking the intervention of a physiotherapist. The system design and manufacture has been completed and the robot installed at a local hospital (St Mary's, Leeds PCT, UK) inside a community rehabilitation unit. The controller is currently developed and 'tuned' to provide gravity compensation for robots, removing any potentially damaging loads on the patient arm. The control scheme has been tested in simulation and using a mechanical arm model to ensure safe operation. Two small scale trials have been conducted to assess two facets of the robot design; firstly the mechanical design of the system to unimpede normal arm movement and secondly, its ability to provide varying levels of lift to the patient's arm to increase range of movement. The former of these trials compares free arm movement in healthy volunteers and Stroke patients with that when attached to iPAM. The robot was configured to compensate for its own weight, so the human upper-limb was unloaded. It was found that the robot had no significant affect on movement patterns. The second group of patient trials evaluated the operation of various levels of assistance against gravity. Patients were asked to point to a target with varying degrees of 'lift' applied to their upper and lower arm. In those patients with significant upper-limb impairment it was found that higher values of 'lift' improved the extent of reach but altered the movement pattern. Results from the trials demonstrated the suitability of certain modes of operation depending on the severity of patient disability.
