We describe a program in multidisciplinary education of microelectronics systems design at the University of Notre Dame. In the "Bits-to-Chips" course sequence, faculty from the Electrical Engineering and computerscience and Engineering departments, and the Kaneb Center for teaching and Learning have coordinated their related courses and teachingmethods, and team-teach a course on advanced technologies and systems-on-a-chip (SOC). Projects in the capstone course have involved the design and fabrication, completely by the students, of CMOS circuits with 10,000 transistors, and are now developing projects with roughly 50,000 devices. A recent project is an accelerometer control chip for insertion into a model rocket launch. Projects are also submitted to MOSIS for comparison with the students' efforts.

computerized three-dimensional models based on the Visible Human Project do reflect rich anatomical details, but up to now, they do not allow for the representation of the knowledge of acupuncture, an important component of Traditional Chinese Medicine. In this paper, original work for 3D representation of acupoints and acupuncture treatment is reported. This is based on the dataset of the male Visible Human, the computerized 3D models provided by VOXEL-MAN as well as the anatomic knowledge based on our systematic research work. The model contains the spatial description resulting from segmentation, graphic modeling, volume visualization and localization of acupoints, and a linked knowledge base, which is a hierarchical structure providing detailed knowledge of Chinese medicine. A 3D anatomical atlas of acupuncture based on this model is almost finished and generally available.

The paper presents a new approach to computer-aided analysis of ECG Holter recordings. In contrast to existing tools it is a learning system: the pertinent features of the signal shape are automatically discovered upon the examples carefully selected and commented by cardiologists. Mathematical basis of our system is the theory of support vector machines that are applied for two tasks: signal approximation and pattern classification. Numerical procedures implement the algorithm of sequential minimal optimisation. The computer program is developed in Borland C++ Builder environment. The excellent performances of our approach, high rate of successful pattern recognition and computational efficiency, make use of our tools possible in clinical practice. The system is tested at the Chair and department of Internal Medicine and Cardiology, Central teaching Hospital in Warsaw, Poland.

We have developed a computer vision teaching module consisting of materials for two or three lectures and a final project for use in a CS1 programming course. The final project is to write an image processing program with applications in computer vision. The program will read in a two dimensional array of data from a file that represents a black and white photographic image, perform one or more transformations on the data and write the transformed data to a new file. A simple image viewer program is used to display the before and after images. In addition to learning more about programming it is the intent of the project that students also have some fun with images. Most students did indeed enjoy the visual nature of the project and were surprised that they could write a program to accomplish so much after just one programming course. A few students wrote very creative transformation functions. This CS1 module is one of several developed as part of a CRCD project, sponsored by NSF. The modules are available for free use or adaptation by other instructors and institutions.

The inclusion of a long-term design project with volunteer user and the creation of a low cost lab to support team design activities and user interaction in the HCI course are discussed. The HCI course includes steps such as user interviewing & observation and paper prototyping. It is found that in the HCI course teams of three to four students are assigned a term-long software design projects. The use of the volunteers to provide members of the design team with data from potential users to develop and validate their design is also elaborated.
