Interpreting and Navigating Multiple Representations for Computational Thinking in a Robotics Programming Environment

Although researchers have proposed different definitions for Computational Thinking (CT), one commonality across these definitions is the emphasis on having students formulate and solve problems in various learning environments, including programming. The continuing attention to CT highlights the need for studies that examine students’, especially elementary students, problem-solving processes. The current study investigates how fifth graders engaged in CT problem-solving activities in a programming environment. Focusing on multiple representations embedded in the CT problem-solving processes, we analyze data of fifth graders who were engaged in a pair-programming robotics interview. In the interview, students navigate multiple representations, such as task instructions, a coding window, and outputs, and in the case of robotics programming activities, a physical robot. The results show that as students were participating in a variety of coding and problem-solving practices, they were interpreting and navigating information within the code window, across the code window and task instructions, across the code window and physical robot, and across all three representations. Informed by these findings, we propose a framework to conceptualize how elementary students interpret and navigate multiple representations in CT problem-solving processes, which could guide future studies in analyzing problem-solving processes in similar contexts. Implications on the importance of multiple representations in programming may apply to other CT learning environments as well. © 2018, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

In this paper we investigate the possibility to obtain locally new Sasaki-Einstein metrics on the space T1,1considering a deformation of the standard metric tensor field. We show that from the geometric point of view this deformation leaves transverse and the leafwise metric intact, but changes the orthogonal complement of the Reeb vector field using a particular basic function. An Analysis by Synthesis Approach for Automatic Vertebral Shape Identification in Clinical QCT

Quantitative computed tomography (QCT) is a widely used tool for osteoporosis diagnosis and monitoring. The assessment of cortical markers like cortical bone mineral density (BMD) and thickness is a demanding task, mainly because of the limited spatial resolution of QCT. We propose a direct model based method to automatically identify the surface through the center of the cortex of human vertebra. We develop a statistical bone model and analyze its probability distribution after the imaging process. Using an as-rigid-as-possible deformation we find the cortical surface that maximizes the likelihood of our model given the input volume. Using the European Spine Phantom (ESP) and a high resolution µCT scan of a cadaveric vertebra, we show that the proposed method is able to accurately identify the real center of cortex ex-vivo. To demonstrate the in-vivo applicability of our method we use manually obtained surfaces for comparison. Copyright © 2018, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The article is dedicated to consideration of the role and significance of applied applications of the theory of finite automata and the theory of relational contracting in economics and metrology. The applied use of the theory of automated control in the general theory of decision making is substantiated in the form of formalizing the rules of rigid logic in the analysis of decisions. The optimization importance of discrete finite automata in the monitoring of economic objects is concretized, a diagram of the relationship between the measuring tasks of metrology and the parameters of the elements of a typical production process is indicated.

The article discusses the problems of optimizing the work of modern industrial production, promising areas of automation, the industrial Internet of things. The author's principle of optimizing the operation of automated systems through a number of promising technologies is described: a model of an improved abstract executor and distributed computing, modern machine learning tools. The application of information security methods in ensuring the search for the optimal connection between objects and subjects of an automated control system is given. The economic and technological significance and role of the potential described and considered implementations are formalized.

This paper purports to share with the higher education community the global PBL active learning curriculum and the learning environment, which have been collaboratively developed with the universities in Taiwan and Kansai University (KU). The collaborated universities developed an optimal curriculum to enhance and nurture students' "Future Work Skills 2020" defined by the Institute for the Future, such future human skills as Sense Making, Social Intelligence, Novel & Adaptive Thinking, Cross-Cultural Competencies, Computational Thinking, New Media Literacy, Transdisciplinarity, Design Mindset, Cognitive Load Management, and Virtual Collaboration. The curriculum fully employs PBL strategies in global teams, where teams for PBL are organized with students with heterogeneous cultural backgrounds in the virtual learning environment. The basic concept of such curriculum is based on COIL (Collaborative Online International Learning), originally developed by State University of New York. COIL makes full usage of IT to generate virtual learning environment for students worldwide. In order to go beyond the COIL concept incorporating the future skills defined by IFTF, the allied universities employed PBL in global AGILE teams to deepen insights from various cultural viewpoints in terms of consensus building through team discussions. Due to the spatial and temporal differences, enrolled students conducted their team learning activities in the virtual learning environment asynchronously, making use of IT technologies and cloud services in order to be on "the same page" in the progress of the project throughout the course. Further, the assessment strategies to enhance students' efficacy is the key factor in the course, which is also discussed with examples. This paper reports the global PBL active learning curriculum and environment collaboratively developed with the universities in Taiwan and Kansai University.

The corpus is a limiting factor for a keyword extraction process with a word matching stage. This paper proposes a framework to automate the corpus generation stage required for the Twitter Model of KeyXtract, an algorithm used for essential keyword extraction from tweets. The initial algorithm was designed with two manually compiled corpora that limited the adaptability of the system. The automated framework proposed in the present research is an extension to the keyword extraction process of KeyXtract and would address this limitation of the system. The design was carried out using open-class words of the source text and by matching them against the bag of words compiled by analyzing the tweets. The automated corpus had a total of 138 words, out of which 74 words were also found in the handpicked corpus (which had a total of 206 words). However, when the corpus was used with the keyword extraction system, the average F1 scores of the system showed a decrease of 0.07, proving that the automated corpus cannot perform parallel to the human-made corpus in complexity. This was because the human-made corpus was compiled using syntactic, semantic and pragmatic features while the automated framework focused only on the syntactic features. However, there were individual tweets in which the F1 score showed an increase. Thus, this was a promising first step in the corpus automation process. The automatic corpus generation framework could be made more accurate by including the semantic analysis of the lexical items. Thus, the present framework is able to substantially address the limitation of the corpus compilation which was present in the Twitter Model of KeyXtract. © 2017 IEEE.

The massive online open course (MOOC) revolution offers opportunities for learning analytics regarding the diversity in learning activities of MOOCs. In MOOCs, video lectures represent the principal learning resource, and learners spend most of their time engaged in self-paced, independent learning. Therefore, MOOCs present an innovative form of video-based learning. How to improve this learning environment by adding additional features to video lectures represents a path for progress. Few studies have investigated the interaction between learners and the video content;however, improvement in this domain is necessary. This paper proposes a video-based learning analysis approach called VideoMark, which enables learners to judiciously review, consolidate, and clarify specific concepts introduced in MOOCs. This analytical approach can be applied to MOOC-style ShareCourse programs in Taiwan. Finally, this analytical approach is presented as a visual keyword cloud for learners to clarify specific learning concepts in the MOOC learning process. © 2017 IEEE.

We analyze certain aspects of group theoretical approach to Bell inequalities proposed by Güney and Hillery. The general procedure for constructing the relevant group orbits is described. Using Hall theorem we determine the form of Bell inequality in the single orbit case. It is shown that in this case the Bell inequality is not violated for maximally entangled state generating trivial subrepresentation if the representation under consideration is real. The lack of an engaging pedagogy and the highly competitive atmosphere in introductory science courses tend to discourage students from pursuing science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) majors. Once in a STEM field, academic and social integration has been long thought to be important for students’ persistence. Yet, it is rarely investigated. In particular, the relative impact of in-class and out-of-class interactions remains an open issue. Here, we demonstrate that, surprisingly, for students whose grades fall in the “middle of the pack,” the out-of-class network is the most significant predictor of persistence. To do so, we use logistic regression combined with Akaike’s information criterion to assess in- and out-of-class networks, grades, and other factors. For students with grades at the very top (and bottom), final grade, unsurprisingly, is the best predictor of persistence—these students are likely already committed (or simply restricted from continuing) so they persist (or drop out). For intermediate grades, though, only out-of-class closeness—a measure of one’s immersion in the network—helps predict persistence. This does not negate the need for in-class ties. However, it suggests that, in this cohort, only students that get past the convenient in-class interactions and start forming strong bonds outside of class are or become committed to their studies. Since many students are lost through attrition, our results suggest practical routes for increasing students’ persistence in STEM majors.
