Mixed Nash equilibria in Eisert-Lewenstein-Wilkens (ELW) games

The classification of all mixed Nash equilibria for the original ELW game is presented. It is based on the quaternionic form of the game proposed by Landsburg (Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 139 (2011), 4423; Rochester Working Paper No 524 (2006); Wiley Encyclopedia of Operations Research and Management science (Wiley and Sons, New York, (2011)). This approach allows to reduce the problem of finding the Nash equilibria to relatively simple analysis of the extrema of certain quadratic forms.

The Jagiellonian Positron Emission Tomograph (J-PET) is a detector for medical imaging of the whole human body as well as for physics studies involving detection of electron-positron annihilation into photons. J-PET has high angular and time resolution and allows for measurement of spin of the positronium and the momenta and polarization vectors of annihilation quanta. Multi-objective evolution algorithm based on decomposition (MOEA/D) had been successfully applied into many multi-objective optimization problems, which had gained a lot of attention from the community of evolutionary algorithm(EA) in the past few years. In MOEA/D, a multi-objective optimization problem would be converted into a set of scalar single-objective subproblems and then utilize EA to address these subproblems simultaneously. In order to further improve its performance, a local search operator, which is designed via the diverse information of neighboring individuals in the search space, and a resource allocation strategy, which is used to balance the trade-off between genetic operator and local search operator, are both introduced into the framework of MOEA/D. A set of experiments are carried out to investigate the strength and weakness of our proposed algorithm on a series of benchmark test problems in comparison with the original MOEA/D. © 2015 IEEE.

This study presents a proof of concept of encoding genomic signatures in the AmpliSeq technology. The samples of patients with a disease and healthy ones have been processed using an AmpliSeq RNA sequencing kit of a custom design, that include 290 amplicons, sequenced using an IonTorrent machine. The read count data show the sufficient coverage in most of the chosen amplicons, which results in a good separability between the disease patients and healthy donors. In addition, several amplicons allow for checking useful genomics variants (SNPs), whenever the coverage level permits. The paper presents a machinelearning classifier evaluation of the answer to the question of difference between the patients and healthy donors, based upon the AmpliSeq panel data. The outcome confirms the potential utility of similar RNA amplicon kits in the research and clinical practice to encode gene expression signatures of diseases and their phenotypes. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2015.

Background: One of the major challenges of the Brazilian Ministry of Health is to foster interest in breast cancer screening (BCS), especially among women at high risk. Strategies have been developed to promote the early identification of breast cancer mainly by Pink October campaigns. The massive number of queries conducted through Google creates traffic data that can be analyzed to show unrevealed interest cycles and their seasonalities. Objectives: Using Google Trends, we studied cycles of public interest in queries toward mammography and breast cancer along the last 5 years. We hypothesize that these data may be correlated with collective interest cycles leveraged by national BCS campaigns such as Pink October. methods: Google Trends was employed to normalize traffic data on a scale from 0 (<1% of the peak volume) to 100 (peak of traffic) presented as weekly relative search volume (RSV) concerning mammography and breast cancer as search terms. A time series covered the last 261 weeks (November 2011 to October 2016), and RSV of both terms were compared with their respective annual means. Polynomial trendlines (second order) were employed to estimate overall trends. Results: We found an upward trend for both terms over the 5 years, with almost parallel trendlines. Remarkable peaks were found along Pink October months- mammography and breast cancer searches were leveraged up reaching, respectively, 119.1% (2016) and 196.8% (2015) above annual means. Short downward RSVs along December-January months were also noteworthy along all the studied period. These trends traced an N-shaped pattern with higher peaks in Pink October months and sharp falls along subsequent December and January. Conclusions: Considering these findings, it would be reasonable to bring Pink October to the beginning of each year, thereby extending the beneficial effect of the campaigns. There are many benefits to getting students involved in research early in their career. However, first- and second-year students are often unaware of the research process and have no experience interacting with faculty, especially at large institutions. Three different course models devoted to preparing science and engineering students for successful research endeavors were offered at three research institutions. Goals of this work include (a) involving students early in their academic career so they can gain the most out of subsequent research experiences and (b) providing basic skills to make the transition into the research environment easier. These preresearch course models include a semester-long seminar, a 1-week faculty-led "boot camp," and an intense 3-day peer mentor led course. A pre- and posttest have been developed to help with the evaluation of the project. Results show similar gains in conceptual awareness between each course format and at each institution. This suggests that the educational models may be transferrable and easily adopted. Additionally, survey data indicate that students completing the program have a high placement into research experiences within 1 year of completing the course. Since 2011, over 500 science and engineering preresearch students have completed the courses through this collaboration.

In this paper, we present a method of estimating the vanishing point from the railway environment images. Vanishing point plays a very important role in the machine vision based railway-environment surveillance methods, e.g. estimating the pose of the camera, video segmentation and panorama. In the application of railway-environment surveillance, we most care about the vanishing point corresponding to the lines parallel to the rails. Based on the prior, we design a fast and effective method-Selected Line Segment Detector(SLSD) to detect the line segments corresponding to the scene-lines parallel to the rails, and then use a cross-iteration method to find the vanishing point in the railway environment images. We give both theoretical analysis and algorithm implementation. Our experimental results show the validation of the proposed method.

FuTS, state-to-function transition systems are generalizations of labeled transition systems and of familiar notions of quantitative semantical models as continuous-time Markov chains, interactive Markov chains, and Markov automata. A general scheme for the definition of a notion of strong bisimulation associated with a FuTS is proposed. It is shown that this notion of bisimulation for a FuTS coincides with the coalgebraic notion of behavioral equivalence associated to the functor on Set given by the type of the FuTS. For a series of concrete quantitative semantical models the notion of bisimulation as reported in the literature is proven to coincide with the notion of quantitative bisimulation obtained from the scheme. The comparison includes models with orthogonal behaviour, like interactive Markov chains, and with multiple levels of behavior, like Markov automata. As a consequence of the general result relating FuTS bisimulation and behavioral equivalence we obtain, in a systematic way, a coalgebraic underpinning of all quantitative bisimulations discussed. © 2015 A. This paper examines teachers' views on Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) and Open Educational Resources (OERs) in Vocational and Professional Educational and Training (VPET) in Hong Kong. A number of the Quality Enhancement Supporting Scheme Projects sponsored by the Education Bureau of Hong Kong SAR Government indicate increasing effort to develop OERs for VPET. Several studies have shown that although VPET emphasizes hand-on practical skills under an instructor's supervision, online OERs are increasingly being considered as effective independent learning materials to facilitate learning and teaching. To further examine the needs, a study was conducted in the leading VPET institution in Hong Kong. Questionnaire surveys were distributed to teachers for feedback from TEL and OER seminars and training workshops. Findings indicate that although TEL and OERs for VPET are in great demand, the funding, institutional support, and technical ability to develop TEL and OERs remain concerns.

In this paper a labeling of a graph with n vertices and m edges is a one-to-one mapping from the union of the set of vertices and edges onto the set {1,2,...,m+n}. Such a labeling is defined as magic, if one or both of the following two conditions is fulfilled: the sum of an edge label and the labels of its endpoint vertices is constant for all edges;the sum of a vertex label and the labels of its incident edges is constant for all vertices. If a graph has a labeling fulfilling both conditions, it is called a totally magic graph. We present effective IP and Sat based algorithms for the problem of finding a magic labeling for a given graph, and we extend these algorithms also to find all magic labelings for a given graph. We experimentally compare the resulted algorithms by applying it to random graphs. Finally, we demonstrate its performance by solving small cases of seven open problems within the theory of magic graphs. As main practical result we perform an exhaustive search showing that no totally magic graph with 11 vertices exists. © 2015 Elsevier B.V.
