Relativistic configuration interaction calculations for some two- and three-electron systems with screened hydrogenic spin orbitals

An approach is proposed for the generation of virtual spin orbitals required to construct a configuration state function basis set for relativistic configuration interaction calculations. Screened hydrogenic spin orbitals, corresponding to noninteger nuclear numbers determined separately for each orbital employing the so-called condensed-space concept are proposed and used here. To test the method calculations are performed of ionization and transition energies of two- and three-electron systems such as He, He-like Ne and He-like U, Li, Li-like Ne and Li-like U, including Breit interaction and quantum electrodynamic corrections.

Interactive Markov chains (IMCs) constitute a powerful sto- chastic model that extends both continuous-time Markov chains and labelled transition systems. IMCs enable a wide range of modelling and analysis techniques and serve as a semantic model for many industrial and scientific formalisms, such as AADL, GSPNs and many more. Applications cover various engineering contexts ranging from industrial system-on-chip manufacturing to satellite designs. We present a survey of the state-of-the-art in modelling and analysis of IMCs. We cover a set of techniques that can be utilised for compositional modelling, state space generation and reduction, and model checking. The significance of the presented material and corresponding tools is highlighted through multiple case studies. © 2014, Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Pore space study has been utilized as a general method for defining soil structures. This is because the characteristics particular to pore space impact the majority of physical and physicochemical soil parameters relevant due to plant growth. This paper presents an image segmentation approach for detecting the soil pore structures that have been studied by way of soil tomography sections. In so-doing, a research study was conducted using a density-based clustering method, and in turn, the nonparametric kernel estimation methodology. This overcomes the rigidity of arbitrary assumptions concerning the number or shape of clusters among data, and lets the researcher detect inherent data structures. After a short description of the method, the practical aspects and applications illustrated with a number of soil aggregates are presented. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2015.

Distributed Control Architecture for Automated Surgical Task Execution with Coordinated Robot Arms

The paper describes a robot control and coordination framework for the automation of surgical tasks. In the proposed framework, surgeons are supported by autonomous robotic assistants and do not teleoperate robots, unless in case of exceptions in the tasks of the robots. Such robots perform basic surgical actions by combining sensing, dexterity and cognitive capabilities. The goal is achieved thanks to rigorous assessment of surgical requirements, formal specification of robotic system behavior, including multiple arm coordination and human/system interaction, and control software development with state-of-the-art component-based technologies. The paper presents an experimental setup composed of two robots operating on a US-compatible phantom, demonstrating the feasibility of the approach.

With the increase in uncertain data in many new applications, such as sensor network, data integration, web extraction, etc., uncertainty of both relational databases and Extensible Markup Language (XML) datasets have attracted high-research interests in recent years. As functional dependencies (FDs) are critical and necessary to schema design in relational databases and XML datasets, it is also significant to study the FDs and their applications in lossless decompositions of uncertain XML datasets. This paper first proposed three new kinds of FDs for uncertain XML datasets based on tree-tuple model, then three lossless decomposition methods based on the proposed three FDs, respectively, are given to decompose an XML dataset losslessly. © Springer India 2014.

The Jagiellonian-PET (J-PET) collaboration is developing a novel TOF-PET tomography scanner based mainly on the timing of signals instead of their amplitudes for the reconstruction of Lines-of-Response, therefore a very precise time resolution is one of the main challenges of the project. The novelty of the concept lies in employing long strips of plastic scintillators instead of crystals as detectors of the annihilation quanta. The diagnostic chamber consists of plastic scintillator strips readout by pairs of photomultipliers arranged axially around a cylindrical surface. To take advantage of the superior timing properties of plastic scintillators, the signals are sampled in the voltage domain with an accuracy of 20 ps by novel ultra-fast electronics, and the data are collected by the FPGA-based trigger-less data acquisition system. The hit-position and hit-time are reconstructed by the dedicated reconstruction methods based on the compressing sensing theory and a library of synchronized model signals. The solutions are subject of sixteen patent applications. So far, a time-of-flight resolution of 125 ps (σ) was achieved for a double-strip prototype with 30 cm field-of-view (FOV). It is by more than a factor of two better than the TOF resolution achievable in current TOF-PET modalities and at the same time, the FOV of 30 cm long prototype is significantly larger with respect to typical commercial PET devices. The axial geometry gives unique possibilities of combining J-PET with Computed Tomography or with Magnetic Resonance Imaging, allowing to perform the simultaneous scan of the patient with both methods.

Cyber physical systems (CPS) combines physical and computing systems tightly. Node operating systems (OS) are fundamental units in CPS. There are still many problems unsolved when designing CPS especially CPS node OS in aspects of predictability, reliability, robustness, etc. In this paper we propose a mixed priority real-time scheduling method to enhance the CPS node OS performance. Generally, CPS node operating system uses a single method to assign priority. The single priority selection method will lead to the high deadline miss ration, which make the node OS performance drop sharply. Aiming at this problem, a scheduling method is proposed whose priority selection is determined by several characteristic parameters. The results show that the DMR of the proposed method is lower than that of single parameter method. Consequently, the predictability and reliability of CPS node OS is improved effectively. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2014.

In this fast moving world, everybody has the urge to get updated to what's happening around the world. There is a heavy demand for knowing information which is crisp and to the point without getting reading the may be ten articles on it, but to get what the ten articles mean. So, to solve this issue, here we present a novel approach for 'Summarizing the Discussion' which is aimed at presenting the user with the most relevant summary containing all the important points of the discussion. At this juncture, we need to consider the polarity of comments and the whole discussion and present the user with a short, unbiased, comprehensive and non-redundant summary. Our proposal consists of a Nested Thematic Clustering approach coupled with Keyword or Key phrase extraction and sentiment analysis or rather polarity calculation. Be it political, social, geographical, philosophical, superstitious, educational, and environmental or entertainment domain, all the news is generally shared through forms or posts of internet. Now, it gets a little obvious that different people have different views. Hence, we make it a point to include and ensure the multi-dimensionality of every thread under the post. We have used an extractive method of summarization with the help of Natural Language Processing where we incorporate the techniques of repeated clustering and ranking.
