In modern software systems, supporting transactions across multiple services presents a significant challenge. Among the various interaction approaches, the RESTful architectural style stands out as a popular choice. With the rise of microservice architecture and the growing popularity of hosting microservices in containers, the need for efficient and scalable transaction management mechanisms for containerized RESTful services has become increasingly important. This paper introduces a novel approach that transparently enhances existing non-transactional containerized RESTful services with transaction capabilities. The main idea is to implement transaction handling logic in a sidecar container, which can be attached to service containers as needed. Unlike other distributed transaction mechanisms for RESTful services, this approach eliminates the need to modify both the service logic and the communication protocol (HTTP). This research demonstrates the feasibility of the proposed method through case studies and experiments. Overall, this approach offers a seamless and efficient solution for integrating transaction management into containerized microservices. © 2024 IEEE.

With the rapid advancement of IT technology, data resilience has become crucial for driving the digital transformation of modern enterprises. In this technological trend, Write Ahead Log (WAL) has emerged as a fundamental technique for ensuring data resilience, highlighting its growing importance. However, most WAL literature does not address design issues in long-term maintenance. This study explores three design issues related to long-term WAL maintenance: acquiring the latest index, log segmentation and reassembly, and index reset after consolidation. The proposed designs are implemented as a proof-of-concept prototype. Subsequently, a series of experiments are conducted to examine the impact of these designs on performance, CPU/memory resource consumption, and index optimization. We hope that the proposed techniques will contribute to practical WAL design. © 2024 IEEE.

Dependency Injection (DI) is a widely adopted design pattern in the software industry. DI reduces the otherwise necessary coupling between a client and the concrete object providing the service. This decoupling is achieved by delegating the responsibility of object creation to an external DI module, commonly referred to as a DI Container. Nevertheless, DI can introduce certain side effects. To guide the external DI module on the wiring logic, developers must either detail these logics in configuration files or use language constructs specific to the DI implementation in use. In large-scale projects, managing these wiring logics can pose a significant challenge to software maintainability. Currently, the Spring Framework stands as one of the most prominent DI implementations. It provides three methods for describing the wiring logic: XML, Annotation, and Java Class. This paper delves into the effects of these three methods on software maintainability, their influence on software design, and the optimal circumstances for each method's use in managing wiring logic. Our study examines the issues aforementioned using the well-known web application benchmark, JPetStore. We adapt the benchmark application's source code through different wiring logic implementations and evaluate the resultant effects on software coupling metrics. Finally, we explore the implications of these modifications on software coupling and maintainability. © 2023 IEEE.

The swift progress of Internet of Things (IoT) technology has unveiled vast opportunities for interfacing and monitoring physical devices. Developers frequently encounter obstacles when conducting human-in-the-loop testing and connecting hardware devices for assessing IoT applications. This inconvenience hinders the development process and demands substantial time commitment for software quality maintenance, thereby diverting attention from core programming tasks. This research endeavors to design and implement an emulator named FirmataSpy based on Firmata, a widely-used serial-port communication protocol, for bridging application software and IoT devices. Serving as a Test Double for IoT devices, FirmataSpy facilitates developers in testing and validating IoT devices seamlessly. What sets FirmataSpy apart from other Test Double approaches is its language independence. It emulates the hardware and interacts with software at the protocol level, thereby broadening its adaptability. © 2023 IEEE.

The computing capability of the embedded systems and bandwidth of the home network increase rapidly due to the rapid development of information and communication technologies. Many home appliances such as TVs, refrigerators, or air conditioners are now connected to the internet, then, the controlling firmware modules are automatically updatable via the network. TR-069 is a widely adopted standard for automatic appliance management and firmware update. Maintaining a TR-069 network usually involves the design and deployment of the overall security and trust infrastructure, the update file repository and the update audit mechanisms. Thus, maintaining a dedicated TR-069 network is a heavy burden for the vendors of home appliances. Blockchain is an emerging technology that provides a secure and trust infrastructure based on distributed consensus. This paper reports the results of our initial attempt to design a prototype of a multitenant TR-069 platform based on the blockchain. The core idea is to reify each automatic deployment task as a smart contract instance whose transactions are recorded in the append-only distributed ledger and verified by the peers. Also, the overall design should be transparent to the original TR-069 entities. We have built a prototype based on the proposed architecture to verify the feasibility in three key scenarios. The experimental results show that the proposed approach is feasible and is able to scale linearly in proportion to the number of managed devices. © 2022 IEEE.

Supervised deep learning (SDL) has shown remarkable success in various financial applications, such as stock prediction and fraud detection. However, SDL's reliance on class labels renders it unsuitable for portfolio management (PM) tasks, where such labels are often unavailable. To address this limitation, we propose a novel two-level architecture based on deep reinforcement learning (DRL) for PM, which does not require class labels. Our approach comprises several local agents that provide trading decisions and uncertainty assessments for individual stocks, and a global agent that makes portfolio management decisions based on the outputs of the local agents. Additionally, we incorporate the concept of explainable AI (XAI) into our framework using the SHAP (Shapley additive explanations) method, enhancing the transparency and interpretability of the global agent's decisions. Our experimental results demonstrate that the proposed architecture consistently yields profitable outcomes in the market. ©2024 IEEE.
