Incorporating mobile device to engage M-learning has become one of the mainstreams. The study is based on incorporating computer technology into teaching activity on science and technology Learning Areas. To alleviate the predicaments of recording, communication, exchanging and instruction when outdoor teaching activities are engaged, the study has developed auxiliary collaborative learning Multimedia Mobile Learning System (MMLS). Based on wireless internet, multimedia functions are incorporated into PDA to record video and voice, to take pictures and to sketch. In addition, teacher's instructions on the team members, discussion between peers, functions of data exchanging are enhanced. Learning efficacy is therefore elevated when collaborative learning in outdoor teaching is engaged. The system was experimented on three 5th-grader classes, ninety students on science and technology Learning Areas in an elementary school of Taichung City of Taiwan. The statistics of the results reveal that times engaged in communication between team members are increased, which verifies the practicability of the system. © 2007 IEEE.

Gathered with the merits of expedition, convenience, and sharing, testing through the on-line item database has become commonly applied. The lack of interactive answering system within the item database system, however, makes it hard for the general teachers to incorporate interactive items into testing. To help testers to edit interactive items, this paper has developed interactive multimedia item templates with the technology of software component and JavaBean. We have defined an interactive test template software interface specification, have developed Item Template Component Bean (ITCBean), and have designed a relative visualized Interactive Test Item System (ITIS). Each ITCBean represents a test item template, which not only carries interactive features of drag and drop, link, collide, and overlap, but also can add into the multimedia elements. The item editor can add test item template by dynamic loading new ITCBean (new test item type). Further, new items can be visually edited by simple Drag&Drop, link or parameter setting. Testing is conducted simply through the connection with the testing server, and the test report will be transmitted to the database after auto grading when the testing is completed. © 2007 IEEE.

Novel broadcasting algorithm of the complete recursive network

The interconnection network considered in this paper is the complete WK-Recursive network that demonstrates many attractive properties, such as high degree of regularity, symmetry and efficient communication. Chen and Duh have proposed a distributed stack-base broadcasting algorithm for the complete WK-Recursive networks [Networks, 24 (1994) 303-317]. To perform this algorithm, a stack of O(log N) elements, where N is the number of nodes, to keep the labels of links is included in each message. Moreover, as a node receives the message, a series of O(log N) pop and push operations on the stack is required. In this paper, we present a novel broadcasting algorithm for the complete WK-Recursive network, which is much simpler and requires only constant data included in each message and constant time to determine the neighbors to forward the message.

Improving performance of transaction scheduling policies for distributed real-time database applications

A lot of research works have been done in this filed of real-time database systems to seek for optimizing transaction scheduling. The findings of such studies examining the use of various algorithms of priority assignment policy have been discussed widely. One drawback of these approaches is presenting poor performance due to neglect repetitively missed real-time transactions. Repetitively executing real-time transactions but not necessarily periodically always are used in many practices systems. In this paper, an improved priority assignment policy named Flexible High Reward with concurrency control factor (FHR-CF) is proposed to reduce the MissRatio and WastedRatio. Simulation results demonstrate that the FHR-CF outperforms current priority assignment policies such as ED, HV and HRU.

In this paper we present a kernel method for data clustering, where the soft k-means is carried out in a feature space, instead of input data space, leading to soft kernel k-means. We also incorporate a geodesic kernel into the soft kernel k-means, in order to take the data manifold structure into account. The method is referred to as soft geodesic kernel k-means. In contrast to k-means, our method is able to identify clusters that are not linearly separable. In addition, soft responsibilities as well as geodesic kernel, improve the clustering performance, compared to kernel k-means. Numerical experiments with toy data sets and real-world data sets (UCI and document clustering), confirm the useful behavior of the proposed method.

A bipartite graph is bi-panconnected if an arbitrary pair of vertices x, y are connected by the bi-panconnected paths that include a path of each length s satisfying N-1 ges s ges dist(x, y) and s-dist(x, y) is even, where N is the number of vertices, and dist(x, y) denotes the shortest distance between x and y. Li et al. [Information Processing Letters 87 (2003) 107-110] have shown that the hypercube is bi-panconnected. However, a definite algorithm to generate such paths is still absent. In this paper, we present algorithms to generate the bi-panconnected paths joining an arbitrary pair of vertices in the hypercube.

A university that develops a program with the capability to launch, chase, and recover helium-filled high-altitude balloon satellites (BalloonSats) enables a number of undergraduate research possibilities. The program faculty and the undergraduates served can also form the engine of an exciting and effective vehicle to perform K-12 outreach related to science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). Nearly identical to weather balloons, low-weight BalloonSats can affordably carry student experiments literally to the edge of space. When the outreach effort is extended and a partnership between the university program and a K-12 classroom forms, the outreach can be transformed from a series of "fire and forget" activities into a genuine, standards-based, educational component. This paper describes the collaboration between Oregon Institute of technology's (OIT's) BalloonSat program (LaunchOIT) and Ferguson Elementary School in Klamath Falls, Oregon (Ferguson School). LaunchOIT is an affiliate of Oregon NASA Space Grant Consortium's1(OSGCs) "LaunchOregon" BalloonSat program. The paper presents some history relating to LaunchOIT, the enabling underpinnings of the OSGC, the OIT-Ferguson School collaboration structure (including some data related to student participants and performance), the benefits of the program collaboration, and how the program looks to sustain itself, particularly considering the auspices of NASA's educational mission as exercised through the National Space Grant College and Fellowship program2(Space Grant) efforts. © American Society for Engineering Education, 2007.

For most portable media player (PMP), the demands for large storage space and longer working time usually can not be satisfied at the same time. In this paper, a low power wireless LAN based PMP called WiPMP is proposed. WiPMP is basically a diskless PMP. Instead, it can retrieve a large number of multimedia data from a remote storage device wirelessly. A prototype of WiPMP has been realized on an Intel Xscale embedded platform with embedded Linux as the operating system. A systematic power measurement and analysis method is used in this paper to evaluate the prototype from the perspective of power consumption. The result shows that WiPMP does consume less power and is able to access much more multimedia data than the hard disk based PMP.
