This paper discusses the investigation of using Optical Head-Mounted Devices (OHMD) for provision of feedback in education. In particular it discusses an investigation in the use of Google Glass in real time training and mentoring. First the papers discusses an application created for the device for provision of feedback on student presentation. Next the paper presents, the research conducted with an experiment involving ninety-two participants testing the application in a real life scenario.

Purpose - The paper shows how access to knowledge can be enhanced by using a set of innovative approaches and technologies based on the semantic web. Design/methodology/approach - Emerging trends in knowledge access are considered followed by a description of how ontologies and semantics can contribute. A set of tools is then presented which is based on semantic web technology. For each of these tools a detailed description of the approach is given together with an analysis of related and future work as appropriate. Findings - The tools presented are at the prototype stage but can already show how knowledge access can be improved by allowing users to more precisely express what they are looking for and by presenting to them in a form that is appropriate to their current context. research limitations/implications - The tools show promising results in improving access to knowledge which will be further evaluated within a practical setting. The tools will be integrated and trialled as part of case studies within the SEKT project. This will allow their usability and practical applicability to be measured. Practical implications - Ontologies as a form of knowledge representation are increasing in importance. Knowledge management, and in particular knowledge access, will benefit from their widespread acceptance. The use of open standards and compatible tools in this area will be important to support interoperability and widespread access to disparate knowledge repositories. Originality/value - The paper presents research in an emerging but increasingly important field, i.e. semantic web-based knowledge technology. It describes how this technology can satisfy the demand for improved knowledge access, including providing knowledge delivery to users at the right time and in the correct form. © Emerald group Publishing Limited.

Information and communication technologies (ICTs) are been increasingly used in sports over the past decades, especially in professional football, with the goal of enhancing preparation and improve the athletes’ performance. Training programs, however, are not accessible for young and amateur athletes. Most of the systems available, don’t have learning skills to adjust, develop and find new suggestions for training, specifically designed for each athlete. In this paper we present the Smart Coach architecture and user adaptation model and describe our hybrid recommendation system to help the development of young athletes. It simplifies the relationship between the team’s technical staff leaders and their young athletes, enhancing the counselling of the young person and their development as an athlete. The system allows performance evaluation for young athletes utilizing various measurements. The match information is captured intuitively and adaptively by acquaintances, relatives and staff, using a comfortable smartphone interface. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2020.

People with asthma have heterogeneous triggers and symptoms, which they need to be aware of in order to implement the strategies to manage their condition. Context-aware reasoning has the potential to provide the personalisation that is required to address the heterogeneity of asthma by helping people to define the information that is relevant considering the characteristics of their condition and delivering services based on this information. This research work proposes the Approach to Develop context-Aware solutions for Personalised asthma managemenT (ADAPT), whose aim is to facilitate the creation of solutions allowing the required customisation to address the heterogeneity of asthma. ADAPT is the result of the constant interaction with people affected by asthma throughout the research project, which was possible to achieve thanks to the collaboration formed with the Centre for Applied research of Asthma UK. ADAPT context dimensions facilitate the development of preventive and reactive features that can be configured depending on the characteristics of the person with asthma. The approach also provides support to people not knowing their triggers through case-based reasoning and includes virtual assistant as a complementing technology supporting asthma management. ADAPT is validated by people with asthma, carers and experts in respiratory conditions, who evaluated a mobile application that was built based on the approach. © 2020 Elsevier Inc.

A novel drive system using Magnetic Multiple Spur Gear (MMSG) and multiple high-speed motors is characterized by small size, lightweight, and high efficiency even at high-speed region, it is expected to apply to in-wheel motor systems. However, there is a risk of contact between the rotors when applied to in-wheel motor system. In this study, a novel axial-gap MMSG is proposed to solve this problem, stabilize the air gap between the high-speed and low-speed rotors, and effectively utilize the magnets, and its performance is evaluated by finite element analysis. © 2023 IEEE.
