Regularized Low-rank approximation with missing data is an effective approach for Collaborative Filtering since it generates high quality rating predictions for recommender systems. Alternative LS (ALS) method is one of the commonly used algorithms for the CF problem. However, ALS did not work very well in some applications, due to the over-fitting to observations. This paper proposes a novel estimate-piloted regularization that uses a pre-estimate of the unobserved entries and uses the approximation errors to the pre-estimates as a regularize term. This new regularization can reduce the risk of over-fitting and improve the approximation accuracy of ALS. We also proposed a fast implementation of the modified ALS method, which is also very suitable for parallel computing. The proposed algorithm PALS has higher accuracy than ALS for original model in three real-world data sets. © 2011 IEEE.

The present study utilized motor imaginary-based brain-computer interface technology combined with rehabilitation training in 20 stroke patients. Results from the Berg Balance Scale and the Holden Walking Classification were significantly greater at 4 weeks after treatment （P 〈 0.01）, which suggested that motor imaginary-based brain-computer interface technology improved balance and walking in stroke patients.

Background: The accumulation of deleterious mutations of a population directly contributes to the fate as to how long the population would exist. Muller's ratchet provides a quantitative framework to study the effect of accumulation. Adaptive landscape as a powerful concept in system biology provides a handle to describe complex and rare biological events. In this article we study the evolutionary process of a population exposed to Muller's ratchet from the new viewpoint of adaptive landscape which allows us estimate the single click of the ratchet starting with an intuitive understanding. Methods: We describe how Wright-Fisher process maps to Muller's ratchet. We analytically construct adaptive landscape from general diffusion equation. It shows that the construction is dynamical and the adaptive landscape is independent of the existence and normalization of the stationary distribution. We generalize the application of diffusion model from adaptive landscape viewpoint. Results: We develop a novel method to describe the dynamical behavior of the population exposed to Muller's ratchet, and analytically derive the decaying time of the fittest class of populations as a mean first passage time. Most importantly, we describe the absorption phenomenon by adaptive landscape, where the stationary distribution is non-normalizable. These results suggest the method may be used to understand the mechanism of populations evolution and describe the biological processes quantitatively. © 2011 IEEE.

Multi-query evaluation over compressed XML data in DaaS

This paper addresses the problem of evaluating a heavy load of subscribed queries (or simply multi-queries) over compressed XML data in a distributed service-oriented DaaS (Database as a Service) environment. We propose a holistic approach that evaluates complex queries over a compressed document and forwards the compressed results directly to the data requestor (DR). Firstly, we review the data management issues in DaaS, and then we will address the multi-queries optimization problem. Secondly, we introduce a new rewriting translation technique to decompose and reorganize a complex query into its corresponding Structure of complex XPath (SXP). Following this, multi-query evaluation is performed based on the containment relationships between the queries. The containment relationships are exploited by a global data structure, the Structural-Query-Index Tree (SQIT), which supports prefix sharing among the submitted queries. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach obtains higher query processing efficiency than traditional ones. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2011.

We investigate our early termination criterion for sparse polynomial interpolation when substantial noise is present in the values of the polynomial. Our criterion in the exact case uses Monte Carlo randomization which introduces a second source of error. We harness the Gohberg-Semencul formula for the inverse of a Hankel matrix to compute estimates for the structured condition numbers of all arising Hankel matrices in quadratic arithmetic time overall, and explain how false ill-conditionedness can arise from our randomizations. Finally, we demonstrate by experiments that our condition number estimates lead to a viable termination criterion for polynomials with about 20 non-zero terms and of degree about 100, even in the presence of noise of relative magnitude 10 -5. An Empirical Comparative Study on Two Large-Scale Hierarchical Text Classification Approaches

Patent classification is a large scale hierarchical text classification (LSHTC) task. Though comprehensive comparisons, either learning algorithms or feature selection strategies, have been fully made in the text categorization field, few work was done for a LSHTC task due to high computational cost and complicated structural label characteristics. For the first time, this paper compares two popular learning frameworks, namely, hierarchical support vector machine (SVM) and k -nearest neighbor ( k -NN) that are applied to a LSHTC task. Our experimental results show that the latter outperforms the former for the LSHTC task, which is quite different from the existing results for normal text categorization tasks. In addition, this paper compares different similarity measures and ranking strategies in k -NN framework for LSHTC task. From our empirical study, conclusions can be drawn that k -NN is more appropriate for the LSHTC task than hierarchical SVM. BM25 outperforms other similarity measures and ListWeak gains a better performance than other ranking strategies. Our empirical results also indicate that using all the labels of the retrieved neighbors can remarkably improve classification performance over only using the first label of the retrieved neighbors.

Transceiver-free object tracking is to trace a moving object without carrying any communication device in an environment where the environment is pre-deployed with some monitoring nodes. Among all the tracking technologies, RF-based technology is an emerging research field facing many challenges. Although we proposed the original idea, until now there is no method achieving scalability without sacrificing latency and accuracy. In this paper, we put forward a real-time tracking system RASS, which can achieve this goal and is promising in the applications like the safeguard system. Our basic idea is to divide the tracking field into different areas, with adjacent areas using different communication channels. So the interference among different areas can be prevented. For each area, three communicating nodes are deployed on the ceiling as a regular triangle to monitor this area. In each triangle area, we use a Support Vector Regression (SVR) model to locate the object. This model simulates the relationship between the signal dynamics caused by the object and the object position. It not only considers the ideal case of signal dynamics caused by the object, but also utilizes their irregular information. As a result it can reach the tracking accuracy to around 1m by just using three nodes in a triangle area with 4m in each side. The experiments show that the tracking latency of the proposed RASS system is bounded by only about 0.26s. Our system scales well to a large deployment field without sacrificing the latency and accuracy.

Surveillance is a vital problem for harbor protection, border control or the security of other commercial facilities. It is particularly challenging to protect the vast near-coast sea surface and busy harbor areas from intrusions of unauthorized marine vessels, such as trespassing boats and ships. In this paper, we present an innovative solution for ship intrusion detection. Equipped with three-axis accelerometer sensors, we deploy an experimental wireless sensor network on the sea surface to detect ships. Using signal processing techniques and cooperative signal processing, we can detect the passing ships by distinguishing the ship-generated waves and the ocean waves. We design an intrusion detection system in which we propose to exploit spatial and temporal correlations of the intrusion to increase detection reliability. We conduct evaluations with real data collected by our initial experiments, and provide quantitative analysis on the detection system, such as the successful detection ratio and the estimation of the intruding ship velocity.

An algorithm for generating home states of Petri nets

Home states are ground markings which can be reached from any other reachable markings of a Petri net. The existence of home states is a strong property, and it is not only of important theoretical research meaning, but also of great practical value. This paper presents an algorithm for generating home states. For any bounded Petri net, the algorithm can judge whether it contains home states or not, and obtain the set of all its home states. The correctness of the algorithm is proved, and its complexity is analyzed, the result shows that it is a polynomial-time algorithm, so it is effective. Meanwhile, we implemented the algorithm in the popular Petri net tool PIPE2, which can be used for experimental purposes. Then a number of conclusions about the relationships between home state and deadlock are given, which bring great convenience to judge deadlock and exert control pointedly.
