Sparse common feature representation for undersampled face recognition

This work investigates the problem of undersampled face recognition (i.e., insufficient training data) encountered in practical Internet-of-Things (IoT) applications. Insufficient and uncertain samples captured by IoT devices may include background and facial disguise that makes face recognition more challenging than that with sufficient and reliable images. Many models work well in face recognition on a big data set, but when training data are insufficient, they achieve unsatisfactory performance. This work proposes a novel method named sparse common feature-based representation (SCFR) that provides a unique and stable result and completely avoids very time-consuming training required by a deep learning model. Specially, it constructs a common feature dictionary using both training and test images. Thereinto, a common feature is based on a discriminative common vector and learned by a Gaussian mixture model for both training and test images in a semisupervised learninig manner, which would reduce the difference among samples in each class. In the optimization, the latent indicator of test data is initialized by the estimated label. This can avoid learning invalid information and lead to good prototype images. A new variation dictionary characterizes variables that can be shared by different classes. Finally, this work adopts minimum reconstruction residuals to recognize test images, thus bringing about a substantial improvement in SCFR's performance. Extensive results on benchmark face databases demonstrate that the proposed method is better than the state-of-the-art methods handling undersampled face recognition. © 2014 IEEE.

Semi-supervised learning utilizes unlabeled data and a small amount of pixel-level labeled data to achieve image semantic segmentation. However, its performance largely depends on the semantic learning of the boundary details of the object in the image, as the uncertainty of the boundary region can reduce the segmentation accuracy. To this end, this paper proposes a novel semi-supervised learning method based on the student-teacher model, which is constrained by the dual bidirectional copy-paste and the signed distance map of the object shape. The method is carried out through two stages: fully supervised pre-training and semi-supervised re-training. The former uses labeled data to train and learn the initial student model, and its parameters are used to initialize and update the latter’s teacher model, which is used to segment unlabeled data to obtain its pseudo labels. At each stage, the dual bidirectional copy-paste between ‘labeled data’ enhances the data, while the similar copy-paste performed on the corresponding ‘label’ supervises the student model. Copy-paste allows the network to focus on the entire object, while the signed distance map on the label data helps to learn the complex shape changes of the object boundary. Especially in the re-training stage, the above calculation mainly occurs between labeled data and unlabeled data with 'pseudo label', which effectively bridges the empirical distribution mismatch between labeled data and unlabeled data, enabling the network to learn a more generalized data distribution. Our method was validated on two datasets, LA Heart and ACDC. Compared with other semi-supervised learning methods, our method outperforms previous works at 5% and 10% labeled data volumes, achieving the SOTA results.

This study addresses linear attacks on remote state estimation within the context of a constrained alarm rate. Smart sensors, which are equipped with local Kalman filters, transmit innovations instead of raw measurements through a wireless communication network. This transmission is vulnerable to malicious data interception and manipulation by attackers. The aim of this research is to identify the optimal attack strategy that degrades the system performance while adhering to stealthiness constraints. A notable innovation of this paper is the direct association of the attack’s stealthiness with the alarm rate, diverging from traditional approaches that rely on the covariance of the innovation or the Kullback–Leibler divergence, which are conventional metrics that have been extensively explored in previous studies. Our findings reveal that the optimal attack strategy exhibits some structural characteristics in systems of low dimensions. The performance of the proposed attack strategy is demonstrated through numerical examples.

Most of the existing work about fairness verification was carried out by checking the fairness based on state, action, or process respectively. It is hard to resolve the fairness issue for complex software systems, especially in life-critical systems and safety-critical systems. In this paper, we verify the fairness based on both state and action, which is realized mainly by introducing an extended Kripke structure and four kinds of fairness (weak global/local fairness and strong global/local fairness). The experimental results show the superiority of our method by the savings in memory (2.08%) and time consumption (26.45%).

Traditional centralized multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL) algorithms are sometimes unpractical in complicated applications due to non-interactivity between agents, the curse of dimensionality, and computation complexity. Hence, several decentralized MARL algorithms are motivated. However, existing decentralized methods only handle the fully cooperative setting where massive information needs to be transmitted in training. The block coordinate gradient descent scheme they used for successive independent actor and critic steps can simplify the calculation, but it causes serious bias. This paper proposes a exible fully decentralized actor-critic MARL framework, which can combine most of the actor-critic methods and handle large-scale general cooperative multi-agent settings. A primal-dual hybrid gradient descent type algorithm framework is designed to learn individual agents separately for decentralization. From the perspective of each agent, policy improvement and value evaluation are jointly optimized, which can stabilize multi-agent policy learning. Furthermore, the proposed framework can achieve scalability and stability for the large-scale environment. This framework also reduces information transmission by the parameter sharing mechanism and novel modeling-other-agents methods based on theory-of-mind and online supervised learning. Sufficient experiments in cooperative Multi-agent Particle Environment and StarCraft II show that the proposed decentralized MARL instantiation algorithms perform competitively against conventional centralized and decentralized methods.

Predictive Resilience Assessment of Road Networks Based on Dynamic Multi-Granularity Graph Neural Network

Due to the influence of global climate anomalies, abnormal weather conditions such as heavy rainfall have become more frequent in recent years, posing a significant threat to the operation of transportation systems. An effective assessment of the resilience of the transportation system before and during heavy rain can alert the transportation department to take necessary emergency actions. However, existing methods for assessing the rainfall resilience of transportation networks mostly suffer from the following problems: 1) Simulation methods for modeling rainfall impacts lack realism;2) After-the-fact evaluations of resilience cannot offer advance warning prior to or during a heavy rain event. To address above problems, we present a novel resilience assessment methodology for evaluating the resilience of road networks in real-time during heavy rainfall scenarios. In this methodology, we propose the temporal decomposition-based dynamic multi-granularity graph neural network (TD2MG2NN) for long-term traffic speed forecasting, providing a perspective on the future evolution of traffic states for accurate resilience assessment. In addition, we construct a composite traffic resilience indicator, designed to comprehensively reflect changes in the spatial-temporal resilience of the transportation system during heavy rain. Experimental results on four publicly real datasets indicate that the prediction performance of TD2MG2NN outperforms state-of-the-art models. The assessment results for the transportation road network in California demonstrate that the comprehensive resilience indicator is superior to single functional resilience indicator and the real-time methodology for evaluating resilience can accurately depict and predict the operation of the road network system under heavy rainfall scenarios. © 2024, The Authors.
