A multi-cluster tool is composed of a number of single-cluster tools linked by buffering modules. The capacity of a buffering module can be one or two. Aiming at finding an optimal one-wafer cyclic schedule, this work explores the effect of two-space buffering modules on the performance of a multi-cluster tool. The tool is modeled by a kind of Petri nets. The dynamic behavior of robot waiting and tasks, process modules, and buffers is well captured by the net model. With the model, this work shows that there is always a one-wafer cyclic schedule that reaches the lower bound of the cycle time of a process-dominant tool. Furthermore, a constant-time algorithm is revealed to find such a schedule for the first time for such multi-cluster tools. An illustrative example is given to show the application and power of this new method.

Occupants' comfort is the primary target in a building operation. However their efforts are often neglected and ruled out from traditional control strategies of energy-efficient building management systems. Occupant-engaged control strategies have recently attracted many research attentions and demonstrated great potentials for energy saving. With them, occupants' behavior is incorporated into the closed-loop control methods in which their initiatives actively contribute to building services and energy utility by explicitly expressing their preferences. This work proposes an occupant-engaged demand response (DR) strategy for building automation in which occupants are actively engaged to adapt their energy consumption in response to incentive opportunities designed by facility managers. A model-based study and a Nash-Equilibrium-based solution are provided to assist facility managers with the design of social incentive policies to promote occupant participation, along with the guarantee of lucrativeness for a DR event.

Mobile crowdsourcing with smartphones advocates the cooperative effort of mobile smartphones to perform a joint distributed sensing task, which has gained growing importance for its potential to support a wide spectrum of large-scale sensing applications. Smartphone users in the real world are strategic and rational. Thus, one crucial problem in mobile crowdsourcing with smartphones is to stimulate cooperation from smartphone users. Several major challenges should be addressed. First, the actual cost incurred for a sensing task is private information and unknown to other users and the mobile crowdsourcing platform. Second, smartphone users are strategic, which suggest a user may deliberately misreport its cost (different from the real cost) in order to maximize its own utility. In this paper, we propose a strategy-proof incentive mechanism called iMac based on the Vickrey-Clarke-Groves (VCG) mechanism. The main idea of iMac is to stimulate smartphone users to truthfully disclose their real costs in spite of strategic behavior of the users. iMac introduces two main components. The first component determines the allocation of a sensing task to smartphone users given the user costs. And the second component decides the payment to each user. We prove that iMac can successfully produce a unique Nash equilibrium at which each user truthfully discloses the cost. Meanwhile, the minimization of the social cost is achieved. Simulation results demonstrate iMac achieves the desired design objectives and the overpayment is modest. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Virtual machine placement is a process of mapping virtual machines to physical machines. The optimal placement is important for improving power efficiency and resource utilization in a cloud computing environment. In this paper, we propose a multi-objective ant colony system algorithm for the virtual machine placement problem. The goal is to efficiently obtain a set of non-dominated solutions (the Pareto set) that simultaneously minimize total resource wastage and power consumption. The proposed algorithm is tested with some instances from the literature. Its solution performance is compared to that of an existing multi-objective genetic algorithm and two single-objective algorithms, a well-known bin-packing algorithm and a max-min ant system (MMAS) algorithm. The results show that the proposed algorithm is more efficient and effective than the methods we compared it to. © 2013 Elsevier Inc.

A compact ultra-wideband (UWB) bandpass filter with an inherent notched band and steep slopes has been presented and implemented with the low temperature cofired ceramic technology. The filter is realized by a stepped-impedance T-shaped resonator (SITR) coupled to a pair of quarter-wavelength input/output feed-lines. The proposed SITR can facilitate not only a notched band, but also sharp roll-off characteristics. Measured results agree well with the HFSS simulated results. The whole size of the UWB filter is only 6.0×6.0×1.92 mm 3 .

The heavily-threaded data processing demands of streaming multiprocessors (SM) in a GPGPU require a large register file (RF). The fast increasing size of the RF makes the area cost and power consumption unaffordable for traditional SRAM designs in the future technologies. In this paper, we propose to use embedded-DRAM (eDRAM) as an alternative in future GPGPUs. Compared with SRAM, eDRAM provides higher density and lower leakage power. However, the limited data retention time in eDRAM poses new challenges. Periodic refresh operations are needed to maintain data integrity. This is exacerbated with the scaling of eDRAM density, process variations and temperature. Unlike conventional CPUs which make use of multi-ported RF, most of the RFs in modern GPGPU are heavily banked but not multi-ported to reduce the hardware cost. This provides a unique opportunity to hide the refresh overhead. We propose two different eDRAM implementations based on 3T1D and 1T1C memory cells. To mitigate the impact of periodic refresh, we propose two novel refresh solutions using bank bubble and bank walk-through. Plus, for the 1T1C RF, we design an interleaved bank organization together with an intelligent warp scheduling strategy to reduce the impact of the destructive reads. The analysis shows that our schemes present better energy efficiency, scalability and variation tolerance than traditional SRAM-based designs. Copyright 2013 ACM.

In this paper, we propose an algorithm for 12-leads ECG signals feature extraction by Uncorrelated Multilinear Principal Component Analysis(UMPCA). However, traditional algorithms usually base on 2-leads ECG signals and do not efficiently work out for 12-leads signals. Our algorithm aims at the natural 12-leads ECG signals. We firstly do the Short Time Fourier Transformation(STFT) on the raw ECG data and obtain 3rd-order tensors in the spatial-spectral- temporal domain, then take UMPCA to find a Tensor-to-Vector Projection(TVP) for feature extraction. Finally the Support Vector Machine(SVM) classifier is applied to achieve a high accuracy with these features. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

This paper proposes a recognition method of human actions in video by adding new features, the joint angle acceleration to the feature space. In this method, human body is described as three-dimensional skeletons. The features consist of vectors of several important joint angles on the human body and the joint angle accelerations are also considered as a part of features. Hidden Markov Model (HMM) is used as classification scheme. The HMM models are trained by sequences extracted from the CMU graphics lab motion capture database 1. This method is invariant to scale, coordinate system and transition. A system is implemented to recognize 4 different types of actions (walk, run, jump and jumping jack) both on the dataset of CMU and Weizmann[7]. Each video clip contains a single action type. The experimental results show excellent performance of the proposed approach. A maximum 10.3% accuracy gain can be achieved by our method compared with the method without considering acceleration. © Springer-Verlag 2013.

Common Spatial Pattern (CSP) and Support Vector Machine (SVM) are usually adopted for feature extraction and classification of two-class motor imagery. However, in a motor imagery based BCI-FES rehabilitation system, stroke patients usually are not able to conduct correct motor imagery like healthy people due to the injury of motor cortex. Therefore, motor imagery EEG of stroke patients lacks of specific discriminant features as appearances of healthy people, which significantly blocks CSP to seek the optimal projection subspace. In this paper, a method, which filters EEG into a variety of bands and improves performance through boosting principle based on a set of weak CSP-SVM classifiers, was proposed to solve the problem mentioned above and was evaluated on the EEG datasets of three stroke subjects. The proposed method outperformed the traditional CSP-SVM method in terms of classification accuracy. From data analysis, we observed that optimal spectral band for classification had been changing along with rehabilitation training, which may reveal mechanisms that dominant frequency band may be changed along with rehabilitation training and spectral power distribution may be changed in different stages of rehabilitation. In addition, this work also demonstrated the feasibility of our SJTU-BCMI BCI-FES rehabilitation training system. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Most algorithms have been extended to the tensor space to create algorithm versions with direct tensor inputs. However, very unfortunately basically all objective functions of algorithms in the tensor space are non-convex. However, sub-problems constructed by fixing all the modes but one are often convex and very easy to solve. However, this method may lead to difficulty converging;iterative algorithms sometimes get stuck in a local minimum and have difficulty converging to the global solution. Here, we propose a computational framework for constrained and unconstrained tensor methods. Using our methods, the algorithm convergence situation can be improved to some extent and better solutions obtained. We applied our technique to Uncorrelated Multilinear Principal Component Analysis (UMPCA), Tensor Rank one Discriminant Analysis (TR1DA) and Support Tensor Machines (STM);Experiment results show the effectiveness of our method. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
