Reward Maximization for Disaster Zone Monitoring with Heterogeneous UAVs

In this paper, we study the deployment of K heterogeneous UAVs to monitor Points of Interest (PoIs) in a disaster zone, where a PoI may represent a school building or an office building, in which people are trapped. A UAV can take images/videos of PoIs and send its collected information back to a nearby rescue station for decision-making. Unlike most existing studies that focused on only homogeneous UAVs, we here study the scheduling of K heterogeneous UAVs, where different UAVs have different energy capacities and functionalities that lead to different monitoring qualities (monitoring rewards) of each PoI. For example, one type of UAVs can take only visual images while the other type of UAVs can take both visual and thermal infrared images. In this paper, we investigate a problem of scheduling K heterogeneous UAVs to monitor PoIs so that the sum of monitoring rewards received by all UAVs is maximized, subject to energy capacity on each UAV. We propose the very first 13 -approximation algorithm for this scheduling problem. We also evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm, using real parameters of commercial UAVs. Experimental results show that the performance of the proposed algorithm is promising, which is improved by 25%, compared with existing algorithms. © 1993-2012 IEEE.

The utilization of Data-Driven Machine Learning (DDML) models in the healthcare sector poses unique challenges due to the crucial nature of clinical decision-making and its impact on patient outcomes. A primary concern in this domain is the data quality that forms the basis for these models, which is essential for their effectiveness. While numerous studies are dedicated to leveraging Machine Learning (ML) to enhance patient care, a substantial gap exists in understanding and evaluating the quality of training data before training ML models. This issue is exacerbated by the lack of well-defined standards to ensure that data characteristics align with the specific goals of ML in healthcare. To address this, our study introduces a conceptual three-dimensional framework focusing on data accuracy, completeness, and consistency aimed at assessing and improving the quality of training data. This framework is designed to enhance the performance, predictability, and interpretability of healthcare-specific ML models and reduce biases, thus bridging current research gaps and laying the groundwork for future developments in ML-driven healthcare systems. This paper presents the initial step for our proposed Data Quality Framework (DQF), which addresses the three dimensions mentioned above. It discusses its potential implications and applications in healthcare data, and its main goal is to provide a comprehensive overview of the proposed DQF, illustrating its significance in advancing healthcare data quality and ultimately improving patient outcomes. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

Agile development aims at rapidly developing software while embracing the continuous evolution of user requirements along the whole development *** stories are the primary means of requirements collection and elicitation in the agile development.A project can involve a large amount of user stories,which should be clustered into different groups based on their functionality’s similarity for systematic requirements analysis,effective mapping to developed features,and efficient ***,the current user story clustering is mainly conducted in a manual manner,which is time-consuming and subjective to human *** this paper,we propose a novel approach for clustering the user stories automatically on the basis of natural language ***,the sentence patterns of each component in a user story are first analysed and determined such that the critical structure in the representative tasks can be automatically extracted based on the user story *** similarity of user stories is calculated,which can be used to generate the connected graph as the basis of automatic user story *** evaluate the approach based on thirteen datasets,compared against ten baseline *** results show that our clustering approach has higher accuracy,recall rate and F1-score than these *** is demonstrated that the proposed approach can significantly improve the efficacy of user story clustering and thus enhance the overall performance of agile *** study also highlights promising research directions for more accurate requirements elicitation.

Multi-focus image fusion is a technique that combines multiple out-of-focus images to enhance the overall image quality. It has gained significant attention in recent years, thanks to the advancements in deep learning. However, one of the persistent challenges in this field is the processing of misaligned data, which can negatively impact the fusion results. To overcome this problem, a novel fusion framework with pre-registration is proposed for the fusion of misaligned multi-focus images. For pre-registration, content-aware deep homography estimation is used, which performs transfer learning on a real multi-focus image dataset to adapt to registration under defocused conditions. For fusion, a fusion module with dual-branch feature interaction is utilized to avoid invalid feature fusion and trained on real light field dataset to achieve better fusion performance. Qualitative and quantitative experimental results show that the proposed method has a 2-3 percentage point improvement in multiple evaluation metrics compared to existing advanced registration and fusion methods, and a maximum improvement of 4.83 percentage points in fusion performance when tested independently on the Lytro dataset. Additionally, We find that the value of the Qcv metric is greatly influenced by the alignment status of the input images, leading to its inability to reflect the fusion quality of aligned images. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.

Data augmentation plays an important role in training deep neural model by expanding the size and diversity of the ***,data augmentation mainly involved some simple transformations of ***,in order to increase the diversity and complexity of data,more advanced methods appeared and evolved to sophisticated generative ***,these methods required a mass of computation of training or *** this paper,a novel training-free method that utilises the Pre-Trained Segment Anything Model(SAM)model as a data augmentation tool(PTSAM-DA)is proposed to generate the augmented annotations for *** the need for training,it obtains prompt boxes from the original annotations and then feeds the boxes to the pre-trained SAM to generate diverse and improved *** this way,annotations are augmented more ingenious than simple manipulations without incurring huge computation for training a data augmentation *** comparative experiments on three datasets are conducted,including an in-house dataset,ADE20K and *** this in-house dataset,namely Agricultural Plot Segmentation Dataset,maximum improvements of 3.77%and 8.92%are gained in two mainstream metrics,mIoU and mAcc,***,large vision models like SAM are proven to be promising not only in image segmentation but also in data augmentation.

Guideline Knowledge is helpful for LLM (Large Language Model) based Agent in embody task planning. In this work, we introduce Textgrad to optimize the Guideline Knowledge for the agent's embodied tasks. This allows the model to automatically optimize the Guideline Knowledge by calculating the text gradients in the Guideline Knowledge and analyzing the loss in failed trajectories. © 2024 IEEE.

Gait Emotion Recognition (GER) is an emerging task within Human Emotion Recognition. Skeleton-based GER requires discriminative spatial and temporal features. However, current methods primarily focus on capturing spatial topology information but fail to effectively learn temporal features from long-distance frames. Moreover, these methods are mostly sensitive to the order of sampled sequences, resulting in significant accuracy drops when sequences are randomly sampled. In order to obtain a more robust and comprehensive spatial-temporal representation of gait, we introduce the Graph-Transformer architecture into GER for the first time, proposing a novel framework named GaitCycFormer. Specifically, we designed a Cycle Position Encoding (CPE) based on the gait cycle, which explicitly segments any gait sequence into more manageable periodic units, to enhance temporal feature modeling. Additionally, we incorporate a bi-level Transformer, consisting of an Intra-cycle Transformer and an Inter-cycle Transformer to capture local and global temporal information within each gait cycle and between gait cycles respectively. Experiments demonstrate that our GaitCycFormer achieves state-of-the-art performance on popular datasets, and proves to be more reliable and robust. In modern air traffic management, generating synthetic flight trajectories has emerged as a promising solution for addressing data scarcity, protecting sensitive information, and supporting large-scale analyses. In this paper, we propose a novel method for trajectory synthesis by adapting the Time-Based Vector Quantized Variational Autoencoder (TimeVQVAE). Our approach leverages time-frequency domain processing, vector quantization, and transformer-based priors to capture both global and local dynamics in flight data. By discretizing the latent space and integrating transformer priors, the model learns long-range spatiotemporal dependencies and preserves coherence across entire flight paths. We evaluate the adapted TimeVQVAE using an extensive suite of quality, statistical, and distributional metrics, as well as a flyability assessment conducted in an open-source air traffic simulator. Results indicate that TimeVQVAE outperforms a temporal convolutional VAE baseline, generating synthetic trajectories that mirror real flight data in terms of spatial accuracy, temporal consistency, and statistical properties. Furthermore, the simulator-based assessment shows that most generated trajectories maintain operational feasibility, although occasional outliers underscore the potential need for additional domain-specific constraints. Overall, our findings underscore the importance of multi-scale representation learning for capturing complex flight behaviors and demonstrate the promise of TimeVQVAE in producing representative synthetic trajectories for downstream tasks such as model training, airspace design, and air traffic forecasting. © 2025 IEEE.
