Stress is a problem with various adverse effects, such as mental disorders and suicide. With these problems arising, a stress detection system is needed as an initial examination of the level of stress experienced. Generally, stress detection is done with a stress test at a hospital. However, medical examinations done in the hospital require high costs. Another alternative to examine stress levels is by using a biosignal electroencephalogram (EEG), which provides more objective and accurate results. In addition, there is a need to develop a portable device that can be used to detect stress. This study tries to detect stress levels using EEG Signals. The data used in this study is primary data that simulates several stress-level activities. In total, 55 subjects participated in this stress detection research. The received signal goes through preprocessing to clean it from noise and artifacts. The data will be extracted using Power Spectral Density (PSD) into power value for each signal frequency. The preprocessed input signals are then classified into indications of stress levels. This study uses Random Forest, SVM, and Decision Tree. The model is stored on a portable system with Raspberry Pi as the main component. EEG signals are taken using electrodes on Muse 2 and sent to the system. The classification model generates predicted stress levels and is displayed on a 16×2 LCD. SVM as the best model test result achieved a testing accuracy of 1, and an average computation time of 0.92. © 2024 IEEE.

Meta-learning aims to create Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems that can adapt to new tasks and improve their performance over time without extensive retraining. The advent of meta-learning paradigms has fundamentally changed how Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) are handled, constantly reshaping these fields. Research study reviews the broad field of meta-learning, highlighting its critical function in bridging the AI-ML divide to improve adaptability. The study starts with a review of past developments, following the development of meta-learning algorithms and their underpinning theories. The historical view lays the groundwork for understanding the course of this dynamic regulation, spanning from early efforts in probabilistic program induction to modern discoveries in model-agnostic meta-learning. The study explores multiple meta-learning applications in AI and ML, revealing how they affect financial forecasting, computer vision, natural language processing, autonomous cars, health informatics, robotics, and personalized recommendation systems. When seen from the perspective of adaptive intelligence, meta-learning may be effectively applied to conditions with limited data, hyperparameter optimization, few-shot learning, and quick adaption in reinforcement learning settings. © 2025 IEEE.

Network function virtualisation (NFV) offers several benefits to both network operators and end users. It is a more programmable and low-cost solution as compared to a traditional network. Since the network functions are implemented in software, there is a great opportunity of extending a network according to the changing requirements of the customers. However, at the same time, there are many security threats since the same commodity hardware is shared among multiple virtualised network functions. In literature, various NFV security threats are reported. In this work, our aim is to consolidate them in a more structured and organised manners. We highlight the different building blocks of a NFV framework and then explore how a particular component may become the victim of an attacker. Finally, we summarise our lesson learned and present open research issues which might be useful for NFV practitioners and researchers. © 2024 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

Utilization of genetic algorithm in tuning the hyper-parameters of hybrid NN-based side-slip angle estimators

This paper proposes a solution to enhance and compare different neural network (NN)-based side-slip angle estimators. The feed-forward neural networks (FFNNs), recurrent neural networks, long short-term memory units (LSTMs), and gated recurrent units are investigated. However, there is a lack in the selection criteria of the architectures’ hyper-parameters. Therefore, the genetic algorithm is integrated with the NN-based estimators to find the optimal hyper-parameters for the studied architectures. The tuned hyper-parameters in this work include the number of neurons, number of layers, activation function, optimizer type, and learning rate. The objective function of the optimization problem is minimizing the root-mean-square error (RMSE) on multiple testing data. The optimal models are further included in the design of a hybrid NN estimator with Kalman filter. In the hybrid estimators, the optimal NN estimators are used as virtual sensors to correct the prediction of the side-slip angle resulting from the mathematical lateral vehicle model. Eventually, the performance of the best selected model is evaluated in terms of different metrics;mean RMSE, mean error variance, mean training time, and mean estimation time. LSTMs are found to achieve the lowest mean RMSE while being tested on highly generalized data yielding the highest training and estimation time. However, FFNNs achieve the lowest RMSE while being tested on low generalized data and the lowest training and estimation time. Meanwhile, it is observed that the hybrid estimators achieved lower RMSE with great enhancement compared to the non-hybridized ones proving the effectiveness of the proposed approach and increasing the side-slip estimation generalization ability in unknown environments with high uncertainties, which are not covered by the training dataset for the NNs estimators. © The Author(s) 2024.

This work proposes a novel image encryption algorithm that integrates unique image transformation techniques with the principles of chaotic and hyper-chaotic systems. By harnessing the unpredictable behavior of the Chua system and the hyper-chaotic nature of the Chen system, the algorithm carries out rescaling, rotation, and randomization on the target image. The intrinsic unpredictability and sensitivity to initial conditions of these chaotic systems endow the encryption algorithm with an expansive key space of 25208. This feature not only bolsters its resilience against brute-force attacks but also magnifies its overall security profile. The algorithm's efficiency is evident in its rapid computational speed and lean resource consumption, making it suitable for real-time applications. To gauge its robustness, a battery of rigorous tests and analyses, spanning differential attacks, statistical attacks, and brute-force assaults, were employed. The results validate its ability to resist a diverse spectrum of threats. With its expansive key space, exceptional efficiency, and sturdy defenses, the proposed algorithm emerges as a potential cornerstone for safeguarding digital images in arenas like secure communication, data storage, and multimedia transmission. In sum, this research pushes the boundaries of high-security image encryption methodologies, catering to the burgeoning demands of the digital age. © 2013 IEEE.

Photovoltaic (PV) power is generated by two common types of solar components that are primarily affected by fluctuations and development in cloud structures as a result of uncertain and chaotic processes. Local PV forecasting is unavoidable in supply and load planning necessary in integration of smart systems into electrical grids. Intra- or day-ahead modelling of weather patterns based on Artificial Intelligence (AI) allows one to refine available 24 h. cloudiness forecast or predict PV production at a particular plant location during the day. AI usually gets an adequate prediction quality in shorter-level horizons, using the historical meteo- and PV record series as compared to Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) systems. NWP models are produced every 6 h to simulate grid motion of local cloudiness, which is additionally delayed and usually scaled in a rough less operational applicability. Differential Neural Network (DNN) is based on a newly developed neurocomputing strategy that allows the representation of complex weather patterns analogous to NWP. DNN parses the n-variable linear Partial Differential Equation (PDE), which describes the ground-level patterns, into sub-PDE modules of a determined order at each node. Their derivatives are substituted by the Laplace transforms and solved using adapted inverse operations of Operation Calculus (OC). DNN fuses OC mathematics with neural computing in evolution 2-input node structures to form sum modules of selected PDEs added step-by-step to the expanded composite model. The AI multi- 1…9-h and one-stage 24-h models were evolved using spatio-temporal data in the preidentified daily learning sequences according to the applied input–output data delay to predict the Clear Sky Index (CSI). The prediction results of both statistical schemes were evaluated to assess the performance of the AI models. This paper attempts to conceptualize a potent methodology by combining the African vultures optimization algorithm (AVOA) with a multi-orthogonal-oppositional strategy (M2OS), named AVO-M2OS, to address the nonconvexity and multidimensional nature of the combined heat and power economic dispatch (CHPED) problem under both crisp and uncertainty aspects. The AVO-M2OS uses the M2OS to simultaneously explore the search region, improving solutions’ diversity as well as solution quality. Therefore, AVO-M2OS can perform deeper exploration and exploitation features and thus mitigate the trapping at local optima, especially when tackling the more complicated nature of the CHPED problem. A three-stage analysis is conducted to assess the effectiveness of the proposed AVO-M2OS algorithm. During the first stage, the algorithm’s performance is evaluated on benchmark problems such as CEC 2005 and CEC 2019, employing statistical verifications and convergence characteristics. In the second stage, the significance of the results is evaluated using the nonparametric Friedman test to demonstrate that the results did not occur by chance. The results indicate that the AVO-M2OS algorithm outperforms the best existing algorithm (AVOA) by an average rank of the Friedman test exceeding 26% for the CEC 2005 suite while outperforming the gray wolf optimization (GWO) by 60% for the CEC 2019 suite. Moreover, the AVO-M2OS demonstrates exceptional performance compared to existing state-of-the-art algorithms, surpassing the best algorithm available by an average rank of the Friedman test that exceeds 41%. Finally, the AVO-M2OS’s applicability is achieved by minimizing the operational costs by finding the optimal power and heat generation scheduling for the CHPED problem. The recorded results realize that the AVO-M2OS algorithm offers accurate performance compared to competing optimizers, where it saves the operational cost of the 48-unit system by 24% on the original AVO variant. One of the most significant and difficult tasks in the modern world is rainfall forecast. Rainfall is a complicated and nonlinear phenomenon that requires sophisticated computer modeling and simulation to anticipate with any degree of accuracy. In many regions of the world, daily rainfall totals are dispersed based on various frequency distribution functions. Rainfall has become a significant factor in agricultural countries. We provide a machine learning-based framework for forecasting the total monthly precipitation. In this study, three Bangladeshi weather stations’ daily rainfall was forecasted with a 365-day lead time using backpropagation long short-term memory (LSTM), random forest, and neural network algorithms. The predicted results from the selected algorithms were compared with the observed data to determine prediction precision by mean absolute error (MAE) test results. We found that selected algorithms predicted daily rainfall with reasonable accuracy. Therefore, year-long, month-long, and day-long rainfall can be predicted using these models. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.
