Measuring semantic similarity and analyzing authorial style are fundamental tasks in Natural Language Processing (NLP), with applications in text classification, cultural analysis, and literary studies. This paper investigates the semantic similarity and stylistic features of Nakba short stories, a key component of Palestinian literature, using transformer-based models, AraBERT, BERT, and RoBERTa. The models effectively capture nuanced linguistic structures, cultural contexts, and stylistic variations in Arabic narratives, outperforming the traditional TF-IDF baseline. By comparing stories of similar length, we minimize biases and ensure a fair evaluation of both semantic and stylistic relationships. Experimental results indicate that RoBERTa achieves slightly higher performance, highlighting its ability to distinguish subtle stylistic patterns. This study demonstrates the potential of AI-driven tools to provide more in-depth insights into Arabic literature, and contributes to the systematic analysis of both semantic and stylistic elements in Nakba narratives. © 2025 Association for Computational Linguistics.

In recent years, increasing attention has been given to waste management. It is mainly related to the promotion of the Circular Economy as a key policy objective in the EU. The aim is to shift from a linear approach to a circular one, which is based on reuse and recycling. To enable recycling, it is necessary to separate waste mixtures into different fractions. Therefore, it is crucial to consider and optimize different waste sorting techniques. Despite advances in technology that have emerged as part of Industry 4.0, manual sorting is still widely used as support for automatic/mechanical sorting. Current manual sorting research is mainly focused on human health and ergonomics. There is a definite lack of studies dedicated to the management of this process which is critical for the transformation to a circular economy. Therefore the objective of the paper is to present the digital twin concept for manual waste sorting management. Four stages of research work have been introduced. Within these stages, the motion capture gloves for data collection from physical objects (workers) were proposed. Additionally simulation model for virtual representation was considered and a data exchange system for connection between physical objects and their virtual representations. © 2025 Wroclaw University of science and Technology. In this paper, we enrich Arabic Natural Language Processing (NLP) resources by introducing the "Nakba Topic Classification Corpus (NTCC)," a novel annotated Arabic corpus derived from narratives about the Nakba. The NTCC comprises approximately 470 sentences extracted from eight short stories and captures the thematic depth of the Nakba narratives, providing insights into both historical and personal dimensions. The corpus was annotated in a two-step process. One third of the dataset was manually annotated, achieving an IAA of 87% (later resolved to 100%), while the rest was annotated using a rule-based system based on thematic patterns. This approach ensures consistency and reproducibility, enhancing the corpus’s reliability for NLP research. The NTCC contributes to the preservation of the Palestinian cultural heritage while addressing key challenges in Arabic NLP, such as data scarcity and linguistic complexity. By like topic modeling and classification tasks, the NTCC offers a valuable resource for advancing Arabic NLP research and fostering a deeper understanding of the Nakba narratives. © 2025 Association for Computational Linguistics.

Text mining techniques, particularly those leveraging machine learning for natural language processing, have gained significant attention for qualitative data analysis in software testing. However, their complexity and lack of transparency can pose challenges, especially in safety-critical domains where simpler, interpretable solutions are often preferred unless accuracy is heavily compromised. This study investigates the trade-offs between complexity, effort, accuracy, and utility in text mining and clustering techniques, focusing on their application for detecting functional dependencies among manual integration test cases in safety-critical systems. Using empirical data from an industrial testing project at ALSTOM Sweden, we evaluate various string distance methods, NCD compressors, and machine learning approaches. The results highlight the impact of preprocessing techniques, such as tokenization, and intrinsic factors, such as text length, on algorithm performance. Findings demonstrate how text mining and clustering can be optimized for safety-critical contexts, offering actionable insights for researchers and practitioners aiming to balance simplicity and effectiveness in their testing workflows. © The Author(s) 2025.

Anomaly detection from medical images is badly needed for automated diagnosis. For example, medical images obtained with several modalities, such as magnetic resonance (MR) and confocal microscopy, need to be classified for anomaly detection. The MR images may contain tumors that need to be detected with anomaly detection techniques. In MR imaging, brain tumors are represented as areas composed of abnormal cells that need to be detected. On the other hand, confocal microscopy can be used for retinal imaging. Hence, there is a need to apply classification techniques for diagnosing diseases of the eye, such as Diabetic Retinopathy (DR), which leads to exudates in different regions of the retina. The detection of exudates is necessary for the diagnosis of DR. In this paper, two models are presented for the classification of MR and retinal images. Much research has been done in this area, but it did not achieve high accuracy of classification in an acceptable time. In addition, the previous models did not consider both types of image modalities considered in this paper. The suggested models are Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and Convolutional Long Short-Term Memory (Conv-LSTM). They are used to classify normal and abnormal cases of both brain tumor and DR diseases. The CNN model is composed of six convolutional layers and six max-pooling layers. A soft-max activation function takes the classification decision. The proposed Conv-LSTM model is composed of three stages: pre-processing, feature extraction, and classification. The deep learning model performance is better than those of traditional networks. The CNN gives an accuracy of 94.26% for DR classification and 95.8% for brain tumor classification, while the Conv-LSTM gives the maximum accuracy of 96.41% for DR classification and 97.4% for brain tumor classification. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2025.

As the Internet becomes increasingly image-centric, users face substantial challenges in efficiently locating desired images due to the inherent limitations of image search engines in interpreting visual content and keyword ambiguity. This paper introduces an innovative solution employing psychological intention diagrams to enhance search accuracy. These diagrams harness historical data to depict the search intentions associated with specific keywords, reflecting both user and web designer perspectives. By integrating these diagrams, our proposed search engine significantly refines its ability to predict and retrieve the most relevant images. The implementation of this system involves constructing two types of intention diagrams: one based on past user queries and another derived from the intentions of web designers for cases without historical user data. This dual approach not only captures the semantic essence of images more effectively but also addresses the multi-faceted meanings of search keywords. Our experimental results confirm that incorporating psychological dimensions into image search mechanisms substantially improves precision, facilitating more accurate and user-aligned image retrieval. This pioneering approach is the first to apply psychological profiling in enhancing image search engine functionalities, marking a significant advancement in digital image retrieval technologies. © 2025 IEEE.

Accurate segmentation of brain tumors is a critical task in medical imaging, aiding diagnosis, treatment planning, and prognosis. This paper introduces a novel framework for brain tumor segmentation that leverages a Dual-Branch Vision Transformer (DB-ViT) integrated with a Region-Attention Fusion Network (RAFN) to address the limitations of conventional convolutional neural networks. The DB-ViT processes multimodal MRI sequences, including T1, T1c, T2, and FLAIR, to extract global contextual features while preserving modality-specific information. Simultaneously, the RAFN enhances segmentation precision by refining local features and focusing on critical regions of interest through an attention mechanism. The proposed method effectively combines global and local feature representations, ensuring accurate delineation of tumor boundaries. Extensive experiments were conducted on the BraTS dataset, demonstrating the superiority of our approach over existing methods such as U-Net, Attention U-Net, and TransUNet. Quantitative evaluation metrics, including Dice Score and Intersection over Union (IoU), indicate significant improvements in segmentation accuracy. The framework also achieves computational efficiency and robustness across diverse tumor morphologies. Visual results further validate its ability to enhance boundary delineation, particularly in heterogeneous tumor regions. The proposed methodology represents a significant advancement in automated medical image analysis, offering potential for real-time clinical applications. Future work aims to explore broader clinical validation and real-time deployment of this framework. © 2025 IEEE.

AFuNet: an attention-based fusion network to classify texts in a resource-constrained language

In the era of widespread Internet use and extensive social media interaction, the digital realm is accumulating vast amounts of unstructured text data. This unstructured data often contain undesirable information, necessitating time-consuming manual classification efforts. An intelligent text classification system capable of automatically categorizing digitized texts based on semantic meaning is crucial. However, this task is particularly challenging for low-resource languages like Bengali due to a shortage of annotated corpora, issues with out-of-vocabulary words, lack of domain-specific hyperparameter tuning, limited ability to extract generalized text features, and class imbalances within the corpus. AFuNet: an attention-based fusion network to classify texts in a resource-constrained language. AFuNet undergoes a comprehensive four-phase experimental process, including baseline model evaluation and hyperparameter tuning, late fusion and model selection, attention-based early fusion and model identification, and an ablation study with impact analysis. Fine-tuned based on five Bengali text classification corpora, AFuNet achieves impressive accuracies: 96.60 ± 0.2 (BTCC11), 85.37 ± 0.2 (OSBC), 97.35 ± 0.2 (BARD), 93.74 ± 0.2 (IndicNLP), and 96.51 ± 0.2 (ProthomAlo). In comparison with previous state-of-the-art models on these corpora, AFuNet demonstrates significant accuracy improvements ranging from 0.54% to 4.49%, showcasing its effectiveness in advancing text classification capabilities for the Bengali language. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag London Ltd., part of Springer Nature 2025.

Stress is a state of mental or emotional strain due to adversative or challenging situations. A human may undergo bad life experiences or events, and it is a significant issue to be dealt in today's society. It comes as a result of family situations, health concerns, work environments and people's behavior among other things. It affects people of various ages, including children, teenagers, middle-aged people and senior citizens. It has serious consequences affecting human body and life. These problems can be addressed by detecting mental stress at an early stage. The main goal of the propounded system is to identify human stress using a pre-trained Mini-Xception model. Additional measures such as eye moments, mouth activity and head motion are employed for determining the level of human stress. FER2013 dataset is used and the system is tested for all kinds of emotions. Human stress level is experimented by capturing video using webcam. From the experimental outcomes, it is evident that the proposed system offers better performance in terms of Precision, Accuracy, Specificity and Sensitivity in contrast to traditional methods. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

Many international manufacturers of infant incubators use IoT technology, presenting tough competition for local manufacturers. This research examines methods to fulfill parents’ need to monitor their babies directly when they are lying inside an incubator. This bridges the gap present in neonatal care units. As such, this study proposes a prototype for an incubator that employs IoT along with different sensors to monitor babies occupying these incubators in real time and send the data to a remote server. With the different technologies used in this monitoring system, parents have the ability to listen to their babies remotely through a mobile application. A convolutional neural network (CNN) algorithm is used to take neonatal care a step further. It then goes beyond monitoring by interpreting the nature of a baby’s cries inside the specified incubator. The proposed prototype represents a step forward in the applications of Industry 4.0 in healthcare, especially those related to infant care and, more specifically, incubators for babies. This research is part of advancements in the use of IoT and handheld applications for the future development of baby incubators, fulfilling the needs of parents to constantly monitor their infants and neonatal care, specifically within modern healthcare. © 2013 IEEE.
